So I decided to do a quick video with AJ McCallister and talk about the Pentax Q system. It's a quirky little ILC (Interchangeable Lens Camera) but it works. The only issue is the sensor size, but the sensor is proportionate to the size of the camera and lenses. Check out our conversation and also check out AJ's skateboarding moves. This isn't a serious look at the Pentax Q and Q-S1 so stay tuned for a more in-depth review.

Hey BHT & AJ, I love this video (as well as the Pentax Q & Q-S1 cameras), so firstly, thanks for posting. I'm not sure if you guys solved the mystery of focusing the 03 Fish-Eye lens, or any other manual lens for that matter. For a while it was a mystery to me also, until I discovered the following method: 1) Press the MENU button 2) Select AF/MF Settings 3) Select MF Autozoom. Here you will be presented with different magnifications to view your subject matter through the viewfinder e.g. X2, X4, X6 magnification depending on the generation of Pentax Q camera you are using. Select a magnification, for e.g., X6, and press 'OK' 4) Select Focus Peaking and 'Peak On' 5) Now take your trusty Pentax Q and find a subject that you'd like to photograph with your 03 Fish-Eye lens. 6) When you have framed the subject, press the 'OK' button. The part of the subject in the middle of the viewfinder should now be magnified, and 4 directional pointers (up, down, left and right) should appear around the middle of each side of the viewfinder. Note: in the bottom left hand corner is a scaled down representation of the viewfinder with a 'green selection' rectangle in the middle. if you use the arrows while zoomed in, you will see the green rectangle move in whatever direction you select with the arrow keys, and the actual image in the viewfinder will scroll accordingly throughout the frame. 7) At this stage you ought to also see white speckles overlaying the viewfinder's image like television static. These white speckles are connected to the Focus Peaking function. 8) Now, to make sure that the part of the subject you want to focus on is sharp, turn the focusing wheel of the lens either left or right, while simultaneously watching the viewfinder. Basically, the more dominant the white speckles become in the region that you are focusing on, the sharper the subject will be when releasing the shutter. For argument's sake, find a coffee mug and focus on the top circular rim. When you adjust the focusing ring, you will see the white speckles either become softer and less dense or harder and more dense, sometimes even forming solid white lines around the subject. When you see the solid white lines around the subject, or see a maximum density of white speckles while rotating the focusing ring, the image sharpness has 'Peaked' (hence focus peaking), and you are ready to release the shutter. 9) Release the shutter. 10) Play back the image and make sure to zoom in by turning the E-dial. The image should be sharp. 11) If sharpness has been achieved, shout "Woohoo" and do your version of the Happy Dance. The mystery has been solved! :). If not, try again! I hope this has been of benefit to you. Keep up the good work guys!!

Haha I'm rocking the Fuji X20 with my board every day. Maybe i can afford an xt1 one day. But nice camera. It almost reminds me of the Olympus PEN in regards to size and lens'. Great review and contrast between the 2 models!

hollagramzz yes, full review coming soon. The IQ on the Pentax Q is similar to other cameras in the same category with the 1/1.7" sensor. Saying that, the beauty of this system is the size and buying lenses. I find the fisheye, the standard prime (which seems to be discontinued) and the wide zoom are the best lenses to have. As well, this camera is a lot about style and making a statement. This isn't so much for a camera-nerd as much as a style-nerd.... I'm both so I love it. Stay tuned for my full video review soon

Nickolas Lim in terms of IQ the Pentax Q's 1/1.7" sensor is the same size as the Panasonic LX-7, Canon S120 and the Ricoh GR-D IV. The iPhone's sensor is 1/2.8" I think, so it's still a smaller sensor so lower IQ than the previously mentioned camera. Plus the Pentax has sensor based image stabilization. Also, remember the point of the Q is lens interchangeability so it's more versatile. It needs wifi though, which will probably be the biggest issue most will have. Thanks for commenting.

I really enjoy all your sites and check them everyday including Instagram, You Tube and the written blog which you seem to have abandoned of late. i really did not get much from this video as it was about two percent about the Pentax and 98% about socialization and skateboards. While some mix adds some interest to the posts my opinion that a reversal of the percentages would be be of more value as I am camera guru versus a social blog enthusiast. Not trying to be harsh or extremely critical just offering input which I expect will be flamed. The previous post where you did a walk around with K Friesen was similar. I repeat, I surely do appreciate your work and information contained in your posts and will continue to follow. Regards, Martin

Martin ODonnell thanks for commenting. Yes this was just a fun video with AJ and I wasn't sure how the video would turn out. As you can tell, he's not much of a technical guy, so we didn't get into an indepth review of the Pentax Q system. I will post a more full review soon on the Pentax Q, including both mine and AJ's sample images. Stay tuned!

bigheadtaco Thank you for your response. I presently own a Fuji X30 and a Nikon DS300. The Fuji purchase was made primarily because of your enthusiasm for Fuji systems. I thoroughly enjoy the the X30 and I'm contemplating a XT1 when I can sell my Nikon. Especially like the style of your reviews with the exception mentioned. The Hong Kong video/reviews were extremely interesting. Lots of technical info with some fun things encompassed. I have gained much insight from your posts, although I have been an amateur photographer for many years. Thanks So Much Martin

Martin ODonnell the X system is great with the compact lenses and wide variety of primes. The X-T1 is the top of the line and you won't be disappointed, as long as you can afford it. The X-T10 is a better price-performance choice, but sometimes it's about your gut feeling, I understand. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more videos!
