This isn’t the way to go if you want a long lasting permanent shower. Flexseal flakes and peels off after regular use, or even very careful use. It’s also highly toxic despite what the commercial says. Short term, yes, but why go through all this trouble for short term. If you want something longer lasting, this ain’t it. Go with the more common materials van builders use to waterproof their showers. There is a reason why Logan is one of the few people with a video on using Flexseal. This is not a good solution. It’s experimental and after trying it myself, really wished I had not wasted the money and time. It will last a year at best, but it’s already getting damaged from regular and very careful use. I’m a full-timer in my van. I’ll have to redo it at some point which is a waste of money and time. Learn from my mistake listening to this “KZfaq Influencer”. Don’t do it!!!

After wear and tear why not just re-coat with 1/3 Quart for $10 and get another year out of it?? True FLEXSEAL has a flash time (toxicity) but after it is set up, it’s not harmful for consumer use. I like to think outside the box and not fall in like with what’s popular. Sometimes that means testing a new theory. That’s why I’m an “Influencer”, a “mechanical engineer”, and an “entrepreneur” with 12, going on 14 van conversions on the road over the past 3 years without any issues w their FLEXSEAL showers….
@jaime5199
@jaime5199 10 ай бұрын
@@biglogan3690 it flakes off everywhere! Like latex. It’s a horrible idea and it pisses me off that influencers like you try to qualify yourselves without owning mistakes and misinformation. A mechanical engineer has nothing to do with admitting flex seal is a huge mistake for a shower in order to improve your ratings. This product is not safe. If it was not toxic you could use it to store potable drinking water. That is warned against for a good reason. It’s toxic. This product flakes off in bits and pieces everywhere! This means if you have dogs or babies in the van it’s even more dangerous. You’re irresponsible and again, I’m a software engineer and industrial designer that’s as much a qualification as “mechanical engineer” when it comes to the proper use of flex seal. You’re not a chemist and you’re not a materials physicist. So let’s calm down on the qualifying. I’m telling you folks, this guy may have sold a bunch of vans but he has something to sell y’all and I don’t. Buyer beware.

When I rebuild I'll probably go with redguard & redguard seam tape over my ply, then when it dries liquid nails with FRP. This solution will eliminate the flexseal peeling off when something rubs against it. FRP seems to be what most people use in vans so I'll go that route next time. I've used redguard with their seam tape before and really like it. It's not good to breath in while drying, but neither is flexseal. You'd still need to wear a mask for protection, but the redguard is waterproof, doesn't peel or come off easily, and you have options of what can go on top of it. You can not adhere anything to flexseal, not even a suction cup. As the top layer, I think the FRP is a better option for folks who live in their van fulltime, or have kids and pets. It's not that much more complicated to go this route. Some vanbuilders skip the Redguard and just put the FRP over their plywood with liquid nails and caulk the seams, but I'm using the redguard for my own peace of mind. I got this idea from these folks who are even more cautious about waterproofing: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7ymqLV9nd20mIU.html @@trev381

Well done and nice idea. For future reference (and for anyone else thinking of doing something similar) the flex seal coats actually bond together much better and create a longer lasting barrier when the second coat is applied before the first coat has completely dried (a very slight tact to the touch is ideal).

I have seen owner fabricated shower trays to fit specific spaces, all of which were created using wood/plywood and thickened fibreglass epoxy fillets on each corner, followed by epoxy impregnated fibreglass sheets to finish. Yours is the first build I have seen using tri-sided fillet pieces in the corners and shaped plywood to guide water out and the entire tray sealed with Flex-Seal, all of which I thought was an excellent solution. You have good presentation, narration and lighting, great videography and editing and a well considered and balanced soundtrack. I particularly like your meticulous and precise high standards of workmanship. Your enthusiasm and engaging character shine through and I am happy to subscribe to and support your channel.

I like the concepts you've Illustrated in building your own pan. If I may make a couple of suggestions. Instead of using the quarter inch Lauan you could use FRP. Also instead of using the Alex caulk you could go to a quad elastomeric caulk instead for a long-term flexible seal and a moving vehicle where vibration can be a serious issue. But once again great job on your project. I especially like the beep your plumbing parts underneath.

Creative use of Flexseal. If you are open to a suggestion I would put a couple of layers under the drain and down the hole then reinstall the drain. The hole will now be lined so any leakage will flow down and out of the van instead of spreading across the under flooring.

Agreed, but maybe it would be pretty easy to carry a squeegee that you could use to get the rest of the water out. This is definitely an upgrade for mine in my cargo trailer conversion. I have a shower curtain that has a heavy Walmart tarp coming from it. I drape it over the toilet, sit on the toilet and the tarp, and pour warm water over me. With a shower curtain, it sounds like he has a pretty good system. I hope that he will post follow-up videos on this.

Just doing my motorhome. I picked up a shower base as a second, had a chip on the outside front, right where I am putting a wall section. 1200 x 900 for $50. I'm cutting a door to fit the portapotti so I can mount the loo on tracks so it can roll away when I have a shower, keep the TP dry, and enough space not to trip over. Thinking about putting a skylight in and having growbags on the back wall for some fresh veges.

Here's a thought: "If" you design a "rain water collection system", you will always have fresh water and you can stay off-grid for longer, in like BLM land, for example. You can mount e-bikes to the back of the van and attach a "milk crate to the front of the e-bikes so you can use the e-bikes to re-supply run in/out of town while the van stays in the same spot (saves on gas money. RE: Power, on cloudy days, if solar panels doesn't provide enough yield, research small wind turbine you can mount on top of the van ( saw on another channel). Just a suggestion. Alternate energy sources that are free. Why not, right? :)

Fascinating, I don’t know if probably want to try a Schluter product first just because I’d hope that thin plywood would hold up long term under weight of water however it’s a neat alternative, inexpensive and so happy you could fit the plumbing below the flooring. I just watched a guy (he’s a highly skilled woodworker/craftsman totally bomb on his shower plumbing by installing it above the floor which means his head is an inch from hitting the ceiling so I’m glad you have room, everything’s concealed and I hope this lasts a very long time

Great job. Loved how you sloped the pan. I build a wooden shower pan as well, sanded the crap out of mine to get a slope lol, but I didn’t use flex seal. Didn’t like the way it cures. After it cures, you can dig your finger nail in that stuff and create cracks in your rubber. I used polyurethane (boat paint), cures hard and hard to break. Also thought about using epoxy resin, but polyurethane melts at a much higher temp. Was worried about the hot water in the tub. You did a great job! Shower pan looks great!

Great idea to put a shower in your build. It adds a huge step up in livability. Just a few thoughts , A boat through hull fitting might work better. They are engineered to provide good clamping compression in an application similar to yours. Did you compare the flex seal to aquarium paint? Does the Flex seal exhibit any long term migration of water through the paint? An Epoxy resin coating on all sides would provide an inexpensive seal against unwanted moisture intrusion from condensation etc. I believe you will have long term issues with your sub floor due to water intrusion I learned the hard way from years of boat building.

❤Love the idea. I'm thinking I'd do Thompson's water seal on all surfaces and edges of components prior and my first layer or two would be fiberglass. The flex seal gives a nice top coat detail and then add no-slip strips on the floor to decrease wear and tear. Leaks are fairly inevitable. The less destruction that can take place, the better. O! and also I'd sand and seal the metal with rustoleum primer and top coat where the drain goes through and add a silicone gasket to buffer the drain from touching the metal. Decreases wear & tear but also insulates if you've ever showered in a cold climate and touched that metal drain-your toes remember! lolz

Cool, i like that idea/setup. I was gonna do something more ghetto, like a 2x2 grow tray. But might just a route similar to this.

Hey I know I’m late on commenting but I was hoping for a quick update on how the shower was holding up now. I really think this is a good idea to use on my build

Thank u so much for this video. I'm redoing my whole bathroom in my rv like this. It's an overhaul cause I hate it rn & it's currently nonfunctional. U have a great idea for me to use.

There's just one thing I would of done differently on the drain part. I would of put down some water sealant and water protection on the wood before doing the other stuff. You can never be to careful.

Marine plywood I hope.... I think/expect fiberglass would have been longer lasting.

Same concern. I'd be worried that 200 pounds standing on that plywood would cause tiny cracks. I couldn't do this without some kind of heavy vinyl liner riding up the walls. Looks great, but if it does fail, it's gonna be a mess to fix. I like the simplicity, though and the dual purpose.

@@cwr8618 Fiber glass and resin instead of Flex Seal. It works for boats so why not in a van.

Just know that the Flex Seal White will yellow in sunlight over time. I used it to seal off all my white gutter seams on my house. So that's how I know. I use it also on the white sheet metal roof of my shop to seal off the screw heads. Works good there. Interesting twist, but I guess if you can build a boat out of door screen......

That looks awesome! I’ve been wanting to put a shower in my truck camper but can’t come up with a good plan. There is a toilet space but no sink or shower. This might be the ticket. Maybe I could Flexseal the entire room and turn it into a wet bath.

Yeah it's a great idea and especially in tight places because building one from plywood saves a lot of space as opposed to the thicker plastic and fiberglass pieces. Please post a video of yours as well I love this.
