Author and broadcaster Mehdi Hasan reacts to comments made by Richard Dawkins.
The famous atheist had said that Christianity is a 'fundamentally decent religion in the way Islam is not', after Ramadan lights were hung in central London during Easter.
Mehdi criticised Richard's use of 'sweeping statements' and called his comments Islamophobic.

When a religion encourages slavery and sxx slavery amongst other things, people should be perfectly entitled to express their hatred for people who subscribe to that ideology whether they are supposedly "oppressed" or not.

Personally, I don't believe in Santa Clause, but I'm ok for my kids to leave a glass of milk and a biscuit by the fire side every Christmas eve. I may be an atheist but I came by that honestly. I was raised Catholic. Today I still believe that we should leave people to their faiths. I have no need for it but others may do and that’s not my business. As far as I’ve always understood it, faith is meant to be a private practice and it’s perfectly ordinary for people to practice it. Disagree. Mehdi is knowingly misrepresenting Dawkins because, despite normally being a very rational guy, when his religion comes into question, he becomes extremely irrational. To me he seems very upset about the time Dawkins called him out about the fact that he believes that Mohammed literally went to heaven on a winged horse... this tells us exactly how irrational Medhi can be.

Of the Old Testament . Yet they have more similarities than differences. I just think religion is so divisive and causes more problems than it solves.

Coran , instead, is always valid, that was the biggest mistake a religious ( made up ) belief can ever claim. Mehdi Hassan is a joke! In one of his debates with Dawkins he claimed he believed that the story about a winged horse was literally true!! Unless he has revised his opinion since that, I would venture there is little point arguing with someone who clearly has such scant regard for evidence or scientific reasoning.

This, and I bet if it was revealed that a senior journalist in America for example turned out to believe in miracles from the Bible, he would get at least as much criticism as Mehdi if not moreso. In fact much moreso because that person would find it hard to argue that his critics' were being 'Christianophobic'.

It is weird for Dawkins to lament people not showing up to church. I’m also an atheist, and while I’ll go to churches if invited for some event friends are having (baptism, marriage, funeral, etc.), it’s a bit awkward sitting there while people regularly pray and I’m just looking around the room. I fully agree with people choosing not to go regularly, I’m not sure why Dawkins would find it problematic. If you don’t believe, it’s just sitting in a room. Have people over for lunch if you want community.

People are tolerated when they aren’t intolerant . Freedoms are earned and based on sacrifice and not up for debate . This is a secular society and it has no room on that basis for intolerance from anyone or any religion . The Muslim , Jewish , Hindu , Christian and non religious communities all have a responsibility to not expect preference or special treatment .

What he said was nothing different to anything he has previously said and whilst some people might be offended, there seems to be conflation with people who hold much more sinister views which is not a fair reflection of what he said. I would suggest people listen to it before coming to any judgement. Things are not always black and white.
