Back in the 1920s, my great grandpa Charles Conway emigrated from Ireland to NYC and became a a friend of Jack Dempsey. Dempsey gave my great grandpa a photo signed “to my pal Charlie Conway, best of luck, Jack Dempsey!” Now it’s at my uncle Charlie’s house

Better lock the original copy in a vault and make several copies for family members and frame it over the mantle and keep one in the office. It's like a baseball signed by Babe Ruth. Dempsey was the greatest boxer of that era.

I'm a brother from Massachusetts like Marciano is. I like Rocky but neither Rocky or Tyson fought the level of people Ali fought: Liston twice, Norton and Frazier 3 times each, Foreman, Shavers, Jimmy Young (who beat George Foreman), Ron Lyle, Floyd Patterson I think Rocky beat tougher opponents than Tyson: Archie Moore (41 years old), Jersey Joe Walcott (38 years old), Joe Louis (37 years old), Edward Charles was only 33 What were Tyson's greatest victories ???......I would guess and say Tony Tucker but Tucker broke his hand and still gave Tyson a good fight. If Tyson had beaten a prime Holyfield (before prison), Lennox Lewis, the George Foreman who gave Holyfield a good fight and if he had beaten Riddick Bowe then I would say he had more impressive wins than Rocky and almost as good as Ali but Tyson lost to Holyfield and Lewis both of whom are younger than Tyson.......And if Tyson had also beaten Klitschko that really would have been something.......In all fairness to Tyson, Ali was only 32 when he beat Foreman.

Yep. Very True. There was a bunch of dumb politics in boxing then. No mandatory #1 challenger. Wills was clearly the #1 challenger when instead Willard got the title shot. It should of been Dempsey trying to unseat the Champion Wills in my option.

@@Bruins-vq5ey There's no way Jack Johnson faked a knockout. It's been vetted countlessly & Endlessly in forums. Folktales often aren't reality. Any examination of the fight disproves this by Jack Johnson throwing everything he had the previous round before he got knocked out. He asked his wife to leave so she wouldn't see him get knocked out. Johnson is just messing with people by claiming such ridiculous thing's (he wasn't the first to be doing this stuff much like corbett).

@@Bruins-vq5ey Classic case of sensualizing a fighter. Johnson often had trouble with punches lacking steam. He couldn't knockout Sandy Ferguson in 1904 Costing him a chance at the title at the time. Sandy was afar worse fighter than Willard. His punches weren't hurting Willard. Go look for yourself its on film. He threw everything he had at willard the previous round was totally spent. Then claimed "shading his eyes" was some kind of proof he faked a knockout. Was poor sportsmanship and even then in 1915 the press thought it was ridiculous. Willard had his day just like Buster Douglass. You should read how bad the press was making fun of him for saying he choose to lay down the next few days afterwards. It was merciless. Johnson was a far better champion than Willard but he beat him fair & square.

@majik_man
@majik_man Жыл бұрын
Langford didn't box 60 rounds in a fight. The standard long version of a fight was 25 rounds usually. Fights weren't scheduled for 60 rounds that would be a finish fight which kinda ended with the bareknuckle days.

rumor has it Dempsey had metal bars and knuckle dusters in his gloves when fought Willard . if you watch the fight watch Dempsey hands and how he is swinging his arms and hands,, he is not punching he is swinging looping blows, and the damage to Willard is hard to put down to punches. Dempsey was not punching. he was using his arms as clubs to bludgeon Willard. , he drops his hands often because of the weight inside his gloves. ..

The Biggest single reason Willard looked so dreadful can easily be traced back to one thing in my mind mind. He wasn't warmed up at all. He had no sweat on him at all, he entered the ring totally cold. He should of been jumping rope or doing something. His footwork was dreadfully slow due to being so cold. He probably figured he would get "warmed up" in no time due to past fight experience but that wasn't the case here. It made him appear far worse than he was because none of his reflexes were even warmed up yet. That's my theory (it happened) to many boxers far after him too. You can't go in so cold. Willard wasn't much of a Journeyman boxer he was a farmer and he made a very critical error due to his inexperience. In my option anyway.
