For 2023 Suzuki have updated their V-Strom 1050 line-up, including releasing this new DE model which is off-road oriented. With longer suspension, a 21-inch front wheel, larger footpegs, wider handlebars, lower windshield, skid plate, crash bars, and cruise control standard, the big 1050 V-Strom get a full off road treatment. But can it compete with the Honda Africa Twin, KTM 890 Adventure, Yamaha Super Tenere and others? Took each, the 800, 1050 and 1050 DE on an hour long test ride back to back. For the way I’m riding, the 1050 is perfect. As you’ve mentioned, it’s a smooth „sport“ touring bike. Especially the engine 🤤 I will go ahead and get the 1050 standard version. Tubeless tires front/back. Road oriented front wheel. Great review as always!

I understood suzuki, front wheel is more suceptible smash and rear is more suceptible tô puncture. 99% of puncture is rear wheel

@@dommotos the front has a tube so that if you go over a heavy lump or jump and land awkward you don't unhouse the wheel from the rim like you would in a tubeless. And the rear is tubeless as its not as prone to being unhoused as most of the weight comes down on the front

IMPORTANT to mention that this engine has timing gears - not chain! Hence you get that cool gear engine whine, much sturdier bullet-proof design of the valve train and to top it off its bit easier to do the valves as a result. ⚙️

Yep, as a former TL1000 owner I appreciated this design. Just lift the cam out, swap shims and put it back in, EZ/PZ 😁 It typical parts bin egineering Suzuki fashion, the shims were/are shared with the DR-Z 400 and probably many other models.

I'll be completely honest the biggest reason I purchased the 1050 instead of the 800 is the fact that the 800 is a new platform. I know the 1050 platform is bulletproof. I may switch in a few years once the 800 proves its worthy of the V-strom name, but for now I'm extremely happy with my 1050de.

Maggie is a gem. I think she does a great job at helping us to understand what a regular person who isn’t a seasoned passenger or rider might feel about sitting on the back of one of our bikes. And she has a great sense of humor.

Since I live in Alaska, Ian, I have no choice but to look at a ride as a long touring event. I purchased a KLR650 to beat up on the roads of Alaska i.e. The Haul Road aka Dalton Hwy, Denali Hwy, Top of the World Hwy, etc...but when I want to get out of Alaska, I have many miles of mixed paved and unpaved roads as I cross Northern Canada. I believe I will stick with Japanese due to the limited European Dealerships available. Now to narrow down between the 4 major Japanese bikes. Thanks for the excellent review of this model...best one yet I have seen on YT.

I’m tired of short people complaining about tall bikes…there’s PLENTY of options for you!! Us TALL guys don’t have that many options so when I see people complain about a tall bike I’m like “go buy a smaller one! You’ll pay less in insurance also as a benefit of not being a giant

I get what you're saying, but these adventure bikes, besides looking really cool, are very comfortable for both touring and daily riding. They have a comfort level that many smaller bikes do not have

​@@bobanppvc I feel you man. Being 6'1" I'm not even that tall but today's modern sportbikes are so compact that I literally cannot find a bike outside adv category that ticks all my boxes. All other genres are either too small or batshit insanely powerful for my daily use.

Great review. I like that Suzuki keeps updating that lovely V Twin, it’s such a great engine. And adding the pieces needed today, tablet, quick shifter and cc. But becoming more heavy and more top heavy at the same time is really very bad. I think the almost perfect 800DE is the way to go for riders that are perhaps 50/50 biased or the 2023 1050 standard edition for more fun sports touring and a bit of gravel now and then

I think Suzuki did a great job with the 1050, even more so with the standard model. Why ? Because most of us won't go doing harder off roading than just gravel (heck it's really heavy), most of us don't need Bluetooth connection, most of us need a real motorcycle with a good engine for what we do every day. Well for those of us who drive their bike 365 days a year at least. I live in Paris France area, doing 15000km a year, and for what I paid, the Vstrom is everything I need nothing I don't. Oh btw, in Europe the maintenance is every 12000km and every 6000 in the US (featured in the user guide). My previous bike was a V85TT travel, it was really good, but to me the 1050 standard is better everywhere except the seat. Love your work Ian

thank you so much for including Maggie so that we can get an idea of how comfortable it will be for a woman to ride passenger/pillion. All of the negatives you listed are not negatives at all for a tall person. We don't have that many bikes that we can feel comfortable on and even though the bike is top heavy it isn't really a problem for tall riders. thanks for all the informative content. I really appreciate all the time and effort you put in a video.

Your comparing apples and oranges….Your 890 like nearly all KTM ADV bikes is off road oriented… all other brands are on road oriented….

I really would like to see a 800 vs 1050 comparison. I do a lot of highway and occasionally some rough dirt roads here in Ca. Probably an 85 % on road. I think a lot of us are trying to figure out which way to go. Thx. Good stuff as always.

Absolutely the best motorcycle reviewer on the internet. The front "tubed" tire is really very strange, and a let-down on Suzuki' part. Like you said, I don't know of any other bike with a combination tube/tubeless set up. I would prefer the base version with the 19" front.

Great comment: I have exactly the same thought. Since I'm not doing highly technical off-roading, I'll choose the 19-inch tubeless and probably get slightly better highway handling as well.

@@kawabungah20i tried both. The road riding is much better with the smaller tubeless front tire. Great bike for touring. It doesn’t beat a 1250 gs/gsa at touring but it’s pretty much half the price and in Europe you get 6 years warrantee on it. Best bang for buck on the market at the moment in this segment

Loved the very thorough, detailed review, thank you! Just picked up my new blue/white DE two days ago. My first adventure bike after 35 years of sport bikes. I love it, especially the riding comfort. Accepting the Vstrom for what it is, I know I will absolutely enjoy owning this bike, even though the height and weight is new to me and will be an adjustment. I do fully intend to use it for mild off road, but nothing beyond what you rode in this video. I had the dealer swap out Dunlop Trailmax Missions for the stock tires. I also did not like the look or sound of the factory muffler and installed a Yoshimura slip-on. I’m the same height and weight as you and too am a bit uncomfortable with the seat height. I have the Suzuki low seat on order. It drops the seat height 30mm.

My previous 18 DL1000 to a Triumph 1200 GT Pro, I’m staggered that this model actually weighs more than my Triumph 😳. Great review, I think you nailed it exactly it’s a big long legged tourer, a real shame they didn’t stiffen it up at the front. I really like the way you go into things i.e. how is it off road / sand etc. ultimately though, it can’t be long before the old V Strom is pensioned off this is probably a stop gap before a new model is announced.

Great review, again. This bike would be perfect to lay down the highway tour miles. A smooth and quiet motor, nice ergos, supple suspension. Quick shifter, cruise control, great lay-down protection...all good. The non-adjustable and too small windscreen is a miss, but the aftermarket can remedy that.The tubed front/tubeless rear is baffling as is the oil change intervals. I don't ride off road, so this bike checks my boxes. At 10K less than my GSA with no questioning its reliability and road ability, it would def be on my test ride list when I shop again.

4:18 you should try to set the front wheel to left and than is much easier to lift the bike straight. 👍

I bought the Vstrom 1050 DE although it is actually too big and too heavy for me. I also bought the 3 cm lower seat and motorcycle boots with 6 cm high soles. I am 1.80 m tall and weigh 90 kg. I'll try to explain my purchase decision: Before that I drove the old Africa Twin for 20 years without any problems. After that I didn't ride a motorcycle for 7 years. I tested the 1050 DE for half an hour with the seat low and found it to be unrideably heavy and tall. After that I rode the 800 DE which felt like a small bike compared to the 1050 DE. After that I rode the 1050 DE again and got along better with it. The 1050 DE is an incredibly heavy motorcycle with an extremely high center of gravity. I feel the weight in every situation. She is a rigid, sluggish iron on the road. Every traffic light stop and every slow bend is a challenge. I bought it anyway because I just enjoyed handling this heavy bike while the 800 DE felt so normal. I also thought I would get used to the heavy weight and somehow I really wanted this bike. Such large motorcycles have always fascinated me. Particularly heavy large travel enduros. The 1050 DE is a super comfortable touring bike that tenaciously stays on track , but city riding and especially maneuvers require strength and are tiring. I don't intend to go off-road with it. There is a small trough in front of my garage and every time I roll the bike backwards I'm scared of stepping in and tipping over. ;0) Now after 1000 km I'm already wondering why I bought it, although I can handle the weight better now I wonder what I'll do when the initial excitement wears off. Especially after I fell over while turning and couldn't pick it up on my own. It even tipped over the crash bar and the wheels were in the air. The clutch lever broke off. However, it has a predetermined breaking point, so that I could still use it afterwards. Maybe I was very unreasonable. Maybe my eyes were bigger than my mind. But when I put the 1050 DE in the garage, a few hours later I feel the urge to ride it again. I'll probably have to study to get better at it. Maybe I'll lower them by 4 cm. Maybe I'll sell them again. Let's see. Other things I noticed: The low beam is weak and just enough in the dark. The gears are easy to engage but like my old Africa Twin I often have the problem of not being able to shift from neutral back to 2nd gear. I have to downshift to 1st gear before I can shift to 2nd gear. The quick shift lever is stiff. It works, but pulling the clutch makes it a lot easier to engage gears. In addition, there is always a strong jolt with the quickshifter. (I couldn't compare it to other bikes though.) That's why I only use the quickshifter when I'm constantly shifting between 5th and 6th gear on country roads or freeways. The cruise control works well, but I haven't really used it yet. The foot brake lever should protrude further. The foot brake lever can only be reached if I turn my foot unnaturally far to the left. I also noticed that the handlebars wobble slightly from 100 km/h, but that may be due to the top case. I hope my english is not too bad.

I look forward to your reviews even not being in the market for a bike. I've come to recognise your sand wash area. Id still be up there if I would have tried to get through that. Being sketchy at your skill level would pretty much be a crash and burn for me. keep them coming.

Great video well explained, Vstrom is overall best, sleek less bulky for touring, simple engine chain drive less complications even if you abuse in off road..the tank design is same as gsxr1100 typical suzuki...for us 80s breed..

Thanks for putting together this review. So that’s why there’s no cruise on the 800, they are saving it for their $16,000 bike SMH. I almost couldn’t believe it when both the transalp and 800 were released without cruise. I would buy the 800 in a heartbeat if it had it. Looks like I’m still going to have to buy a used tiger 800.

I love throttle lock on. I use it on my Harley for long distance trips, and it works the wonders. Sure it is NOT aided by any computer, and purely mechanical...but I guess that is the point of having it on Harley.

Great review. I think it it looks wonderful. I am going to test drive one this week. I am a big and strong man. so the size is not intimidating. So this will probably be my next bike. But it looks like I need to lover the pegs a bit.

What a wonderful, well rounded, crisp review.. I love these bigger Stroms, come what may, every bike has its flaw, but the L twin character and the practicality of it as just an everyday do-it-all motorcycle... The Strom perfectly fits it..

Love your reviews. One suggestion, when you talk about the lean angle, the presentation would be better if your camera angle was head on to the bike so we can set exactly how far the bike is leaning.

Suzuki has certainly upped their game with quality. It wasn’t so long ago that new bikes would arrive in the crate with surface corrosion on the headers and mirrors/bar ends that would strip the threads and start spinning round. They always had great engines and even better transmissions, so I’m pleased to see that this bike looks great. They only things down a bit with the terrible screen adjustment system and the weird tubed front/tubeless back. Great review!

2008 Honda XT250 has a tubeless rear and tubed front. To be honest most punctures are in the rear. Front punctures are usually pinch flats so it makes sense.

Thank you for another great review. I would like to ask you, I hope to get my license in the next few weeks, I really love this one and also the v storm 800DE, maybe even better, the 800DE. Would you recommend even considering this 1050 for a beginner? I love about the 1050 that it has cornering abs, but is it that important? Have to say that I would not enjoy much off road since it is not very possible in germany. Thanks in advance 🙏

I own the first gen bike They are such great bikes. I don’t think they can be as top heavy as are the Tigers or even the Africa Twins with their inline cylinders and higher ground clearances

Great video Ian. 250kg and tall. Like alot of these bikes their heavy so off road I wouldn't want to pick it up. Good as a tourer no doubt but in some ways I would be inclined to buy a sports touring bike if that's the only application riders might use the Suzuki for. I do own a Triumph Tiger 800 but I'm downsizing to a smaller lightweight ADV.

A couple of questions for you Ian. I have a 2019 Adventure Sports Africa Twin. Thinking about going for the 2023 1050 V-Strom DE. How does the V-Strom sand handling compare, DE and my year Africa Twin? Fairly close? I know you don't like the V-Strom in the sand:)) V-Strom have noticeably more power than my year AT? We are more road bias for sure, and don't plan on very technical or difficult off road. I'd say dad bike off roading is a good description for me:) What do you think? Thanks for all the great reviews! Having 6 bikes between my wife and I, your reviews carry a lot of weight in our decisions. The wife just picked up the 800 DE and loves it! Your review had us looking for one and we lucked out and found one close to us. It's just a little small for me, 6'3" 230#.

Hello Ian. New subscriber here from sunny Florida. Very impressed with your reviews. Any plans on testing the standard V-Strom 1050? I'm selling my sport bike (SV650S0) to get a more comfortable bike and I've been seriously considering the V-Strom 1050 for two up riding on back roads but lately I've seen videos on the Africa Twin and I'm considering that one as well. You saved me allot of money with these reviews, I was just about to put the money down on a T7 early last year but after watching your review I thought about how top heavy it is and bought an 890r instead and never looked back.

T7 is reliable but KTM is not, but its fun until it broke.. I like Norden Expedition but I would go for a more reliable bike.

As a rider of Africa Twins, both base and Adventure Sport ES DCT, the V-Strom does not tempt me in the way the Norden 901, KTM 890R or the Ducati Desert X do. Hard to imagine the Strom being able to adapt to real-world conditions on the BDR trails or long stretches of janky terrain found in SD, WY, ID and OR. I know I would tear that oil filter off as well.

Hello Ian. I have a question concerning high fenders on a dual-sport like the ktm 690 enduro r. Do you think that the high fender could create lift at high speeds like 85mph and above making the front end feel light and a little unstable on the road? I’ve checked everything from wheel balance and bearings to suspension settings and sag but cannot get rid of this feeling. I’m going to remove the fender and see if it still does it next

What bikes would you recommend for a first bike to a mature adult (big guy) that would keep them riding and is a capable ADV bike. I'm about the practicality of the ADV segment, if you want to fish and take your bike there it'll do it or ride the road for a weekend. I was looking at the DRZ400 and DR650 but some of these bikes like the V-Strom 800DE seem to be closer than I think but?? I'm not sure how I'll like riding in traffic or will do at slow speed handling. We don't have the places to ride off road in Ohio that you guys have out West so no fire roads to ride. Nice video!

Which would you recommend for an all-around adv bike? The 1050 de or 800 de. I lean toward the 800 but curious about your thoughts. Mainly looking at more of a jack of all trades, master of none.

I like that Suzuki has gone with the good, better, best approach for sub models vs optioning people to death. It reminds me of Honda cars in the early 00s where you had LX (stripped out model), EX (the one you wanted, this is the model that had everything you needed plus good value luxury like alloys, sunroof, tinted windows, nicer seat materials) and EX-L (just an EX with leather seats). I think the only option on my 04 CR-V EX had was you could get the Real-time 4wd system vs FWD on the LX model, the EX and EX-L where all AWD. Made it easier to buy them new and used which improved residuals since the market was firmly established. Wish car makers would go back to this approach. I’m in the boat that if you’re doing a lot of off-roading and technical trail riding then you’re better off passing on these big ADVs and buying a 650. If you’re going this big just get the best road biased one you can get.

So after watch a lot of your videos and tones of others i got the de800 after watching this im glade maybe in 2025 suzuki may make a 1000de parallel twin with an adjustable 3 position seat cruise control full adjustable screen and a shaft driven system with a real 60 40 tubeless tyers and that would be worth trading my fantastic 800de on

I prefer the 800DE for its looks and suspension but I'm a sucker for big V-twins for the open road. I would go for the 800 and 1050. Both is better.

I'd just go for the 800DE with a remap (if and when one becomes available) , a suspension adjustment and an aftermarket CC (if and when one becomes available). That would be a complete package

I wish for a vid that explains the details of suspension. I don't understand "preload", "rebound" and "compression". For example, my weight is 236 pounds or 107 kg and I have a KTM 390 Adventure, how do I set these values?

I’m a huge ‘Strom fan, but - held against what’s available from other manufacturers at a similar price - I’m amazed Suzuki still sells these. Sure, it’s solid and reliable; so is oatmeal. For what it’s worth, if I wanted a Big ‘Strom I’d buy either a lightly used one or, even better, a high mileage old one.

My 2020 vstrom 1050xt has completed two bdrs two up so never fear that they arnt competitive. I always laugh when reviewers say the most expensive bikes are leagues above the suzuki. I'll tell you what I've never had broken on a trail a valve cover. I've found plenty of 27k Beemers down for the count because they hit a rock though. Naturally the ktms never made it that far in the first place

@@CaptLawrence Think you may be making my point? The ‘Strom’s are great - I’ve owned three, all bought new. In retrospect, by virtue of their reliability, the last two should have been pre-owned, preferably all farkled up with a lot of miles. In my not so humble opinion, especially now that the ‘Strom’s price is similar, my Africa Twin is a better purchase.

But in all seriousness these bikes are far to expensive across the board 20k for a africa twin is insane. 18k for a tricked out strom is equally stupid and 25k for a bmw is just an attack on my financial wellbeing

11:50 you can change the oil more rarely if you drive like a grandma. For the longer service interval bikes it tends to say 10.000 km because they assume the typical 50 year old commute distance with some light touring. If you actually give it the beans go for the 6000km intervals

Great review, I own the previous version 2018 1000xt and its fantastic on and off&road with the right tyres ets yes it has its limitations but tbo any adv 200kg+ is only good for gravel and light dirt anyway anything more and your on the wrong bike nomatter how much suspension you got. It seems this version has gained significant weight over the 1000xt and the motor has lost some low torque?.

I think the only thing I don’t like about the v strom right now is it’s seemingly low exhaust. Id be worried about passing through water with that thing. Other than that, they seem dope.

The front Tyre being a tube is mostly because in hard riding if you dint a rim, you can knock it out and a tube will still inflate. With a tubeless set up if you dint a rim, it's very hard to get the tyre to seal and inflate. Back tyres are less likely to suffer flats and ultimately dint rims and therefore Suzuki went with Tubeless. Actually very smart on Suzuki's behalf.

...now about that AF AS v VStrom comparison 😇😊 I owned two previous VStrom 1000's, after the initial valve check, they stayed in spec and never budged. I stopped checking after two more.. I know, I'm a bad person 🤣

A 21 inch wheel on the Vstrom 15 years ago would have made it the defacto GS and SuperAdventure alternative. This 2023 DE model is really accomplished and will make a lot of people happy. A factory suspension upgrade option would have made it a killer

You will not find a bigger fan of the V Strom then myself, its the only motorcycle I regret selling (2018 1000 xt) with that said I paid 11k otd in CA. The new bike would be close to 19k old NO THANKS!

So would you get this over a Super Tenere? Use case would be 85% road 2 up riding and camping trips. The shaft drive on the Super is just really convincing me.
