Trying to figure out what numbers we need to look at when trying to evaluate the BigScreen Beyond after hearing comments like "The Numbers don't quantify the experience".
I'm very much hoping I have the same reaction in this review.

I would like to add that in my exercise I had the Index and Aero rachetted down harder than I could ever stand to have them in game for any reasonable amount of time. When they are set like I normally have them to hold "well enough" but still be comfortable, the motion is more noticable. I am now more sensitized to this motion and it jumps out at me more than it did before. Over the last 6 years, I think most of us have taken a lot of things in stride as just being part of the VR experience. We adapt and move on. I think like driving in the rain where our brain fills in the blanks and gives us enough to work with, that we do tend to compensate for this blurring subconsciously while we are focused on what we are playing. That subconscious adaptation is I think where people using a BSB for the first time get this feeling things are more natural without being able to explain it. Everything looks more natural and moves more fluidly and sharply, but we've been conditioned and are so used to adapting that we can't place the issue that was just solved. It "feels" like a revelation, but have trouble putting our finger on why that is. I've been told that lack of moire from the OLED panels along with their RGB stripe pattern etc.. etc.. have an impact on this as well, but it's hard for me to even speculate on that until I see it with my own eyes. And realistically I won't be able to put any numbers against those things and I don't have the equipment to measure those values. So I could only give subjective comments about those things. I look forward to getting my BSB in September, to find out for myself. My current plan is to use this $12.99 USB-C DAC to headset amp. www.amazon.com/dp/B083LC9WMB to drive my IEM's which have 37db of attenuation using Comply Pro inserts so I can't hear my rig in game which I expect to be very immersive. I have ordered the audio strap, just to see if I have a use case for it. I might like it for room scale games. Time will tell.

Saw an interesting discussion about this video that mentioned that I never took into account the impact the motion has on tracking and how it will take your headset just a little time to catch up with you when you move your head creating a delay.

This was a fantastic video, thank you for creating this Mark. Hearing those figures really helps to understand the difference between these headsets, and what makes the Beyond so special. I am eager to get my hands on mine, and with degenerative disc disease in my neck, I think the Beyond will bring me back into VR in a new way, and without nearly as much strain on my neck. It's a good point about motion clarity when moving. I think the "magic of trying vr for the first time again" can also be attributed to the way that early headsets all used OLED screens giving very good contrast and colours, and bigscreen is the first to return to a type of OLED technology for quite some time (other than the PSVR2 but that has it's own issues)

People really underestimate how important it is for a headset to be a part of your body rather than a hindrance, newcomres always feel uncomfortable with the gigantic bulks hanging in front of their heads and moving around with every fast motion. The form factor of the Beyond is what we need for VR to actually become a mainstream device.

Yes, and different use cases will highlight more issues/strengths/weaknesses than others. I also think that this issue may have a subconscious factor since we have adapted to this motion. There are some things that people don't notice consciously that can give them headaches or nausea. By the same token, the "feeling" of something being more natural could be more subconscious. You may not consciously notice your headset moving on your face, but it does. I clamped my headsets down to uncomfortably tight levels and they still moved. A mass in motion doesn't magically stop and with the much higher resolution of modern headsets it doesn't take many degrees of motion to smear an image.

excellent video Mark, you nailed it! I ordered this the day after I found out about the headset, having done a lot of real life racing with helmets I could never deal with how terribly made the headset straps/face interfaces are, like it should be as ergonomic and well fit as putting on a racing helmet but it isn't it's horrendous, and this optics compensation we do manually to make up for the terrible shaking is exactly what i needed to get rid of in VR, not the helmet feeling but the terrible shaking i feel constantly like i can't move my head properly if i'm focusing on apexes because the headset isn't lined up with my eyes properly at all times. We all have different use cases and comfort levels with things. I have a fan on my sim rig and when driving I can work up a sweat. I think a smaller headset will allow me to stay cooler and a lighter weight and size will be more comfortable and that it will not move around in rally like every other headset I've used to date. Meanwhile the VRFlightSimGuy drives a motorcycle and is used to wearing a helmet and almost exclusively uses a flight sim in VR which is a pretty smooth experience. So for him the weight and size are something he is used to and the lack of abrupt motion in flight is unlikely shake his headset much.

Apart from the blur that mini OLED have when the image moves fast. So there it goes all your clarity when you move your head around. While the Beyond suffers from this issue much less than the Arpara did, it's still present and noticeable. You will NOT have a clear image throughout when you move your head.

I've heard that people have varying sensitivity to the persistence. People who don't notice it at all bump the brightness up as high at 130%. People who do notice it drop the brightness a bit. Many like 80%. So I think this is something that I'll need to evaluate in terms of what I happen to be sensitive to.
@lavir74
@lavir74 Жыл бұрын
@@markkovalcson7243 Yes, but if we go by what just people notice then you can apply the same exact logic for the other more "bulky" headsets you mentioned. Not only this, you can mod those headsets (by customizing the gasket foam so that it adheres perfectly to your face shape and/or add accessories that fix the headset more firmly to the head) to greatly minimize (if not either totally remove) any possible micro movement around your face/head. The issues concerning persistence on mini-OLEDs cannot be fixed through external measures (you can mitigate them by lowering brightness but then the headset is not really that bright to begin with).

@@lavir74Having custom formed facial interfaces for larger headsets would give them the excellent light leakage seal that the Bigscreen Beyond has. This is an idea that I could see eventually becoming more common at least as an optional accessory for other headsets. It just makes too much sense. This light seal is the key reason that the light that the BSB has, works much better than the same nits would in other headsets. In a regular headset it simply would not be enough light for a satisfying experience. With a complete seal, your eyes will adapt. In fact the BSB even works well with the brightness turned down quite a bit. The human eye works well in an extremely large range of light, but not with light leakage. A custom seal would help keep other headsets in place, including reducing or removing the nose rattling issue. It would also help dampen vibration. So once again, a can see this idea being adopted for other headsets and I think it would help both with light leakage and vibration. But all that extra weight would still be felt as extra mass you are moving. Unfortunately when you have a reasonable weight at a distance from your face, keeping it locked to your face would require fairly strong clamping forces on your head and be very uncomfortable. A custom seal would keep it from sliding on your face such that you wouldn’t need to readjust your headset when it moved, but the display would still vibrate and settle out. A custom seal would improve this, but without being uncomfortably rigid and clamping your head still would not be able to lower vibrations to the level an extremely lightweight headset can. In terms of comfort and immersion, with a small light headset you can actually forget you are wearing a headset and be immersed in a virtual environment without the feeling that you are wearing a heavy helmet. So I still think the overall experience will be improved in a much more substantial way with something small and light like the BSB for many reasons. I’m not saying that a person can’t enjoy a larger headset. I’ve done this for the last 6 years like many others have. I just see the BSB a the first in a new generation of headsets that will dramatically improve the immersive feeling in VR.

Based on recent devlog posts, 10-15% of Beyonds are needing IPD adjustments which requires swapping the headset. While they are staffing up, their response time has dropped quite a bit. Initially they were responding in a couple days, then that dropped to a couple weeks and I suspect they are swamped right now. I think part of this is self inflicted. I don't think they wanted to include a request to see an optometrist in addition to getting a facial scan. People were already complaining about getting the facial scan. That doesn't cover your cushion issue. They have found and corrected some issues with certain cushions as well. The bottom line is that this is a highly customized headset and Bigscreen is going through a learning curve that only can occur when they are shipping thousands of units.

part of it is the weight and comfort. it is an incredibly light headset and will probably stay the lightest out there for a very long time. 100% of headsets are uncomfortable, we just get used to them. I guarantee you did not feel comfortable with that original vive headset when you first put it on, you just adapted. this is probably the biggest thing about the beyond to reviewers. it is remarkably light. also, this type of oled panel has never been used ever in vr. it uses a monocrystaline back plane. so the entire image will have the exact same brightness over the panel. no vr headset ever made has this technology yet. that is another interesting thing to add. this is a wild type of oled panel. it is not the same as any other (including the psvr)

I don't think that's quite right. "Settling time" is not a problem on the Index when it's fully tightened in, although depending on a user's face shape it may not be comfortable when tightened enough. I've played very fast games like Boxing, Table Tennis, expert+ Beat Saber with 360 and multilane maps that require fast movements and losing the "sweet spot" on the Index has never been a problem. I think ultimately the Beyond is good because of a multitude of factors. Perhaps for some people the "settling time" is an issue, but there's more to it than just that. If you are comparing to the Varjo edge to edge clarity improvements might be a factor. The optics and the OLED microdisplay provide additional benefits. Plus, it's a fraction of the cost of the Varjo.

I think there are multiple issues at work in terms of headset movement. My Rift fit my face very well and was very light and it moved the least of any headset I've had to date. My Index is comfortable but doesn't fit my face quite as well in terms of form fitting and holding the headset in place. My Aero moves around more than either of the first two and feels heavier because it hangs out further. I love the support over the top of it and it is comfortable, but it also moves a lot. I know one guy who told me that the Index just didn't fit his face well at all and he needed to make many customizations to the interface to make it comfortable for him. My point is just that everyone's head and face are shaped and sized differently and a one size fits all solution will never be optimum. The BSB is killing two birds in this respect. First it's light and small so there are less forces involved, but also importantly the custom facial interface will fit my face perfectly and help hold it in place. I was just playing a room scale game with my Aero and it is very sharp, but I could tell it was moving around on my face quite a bit. Now that I know this issue is going away soon, it bothers me more than it has historically when I just accepted it as a part of life. In game the fact it's moving does change how I move my head to try to minimize this.

_the sum of its parts is the lack of its parts_ I just ordered mine, but hypothetically couldn't the nose rattle on the larger headsets be prevented by filling the gap with tissue or other material?
@markkovalcson7243
@markkovalcson7243 9 ай бұрын
I tried the apache head strap to see if I could keep the headset mounted better to my head. The issue with my nose rattling isn't that it hurts my nose, but that the whole headset is moving around. Tissue wouldn't stop that, but let's say that I had a perfectly molded gel part that fit around my nose and filled the nose cavity of the headset. The headset wouldn't stop moving. There would be too much momentum. It would instead start to pivot around my nose. That would probably be a substantial improvement, but it wouldn't hold the headset still.

Thanks for your video Mark. I'm particularly interested in what you mention about the perception of motion. I've got a Quest 2 and a Varjo Aero, and although I really like the clarity of the Aero one thing I immediately noticed coming from the Quest 2 is that the tracking feels a lot more sensitive, picks up a lot more vibrations than the Quest 2, feels like a bit "digital" so less natural. I've also got a motion platform and the extra sensitivity is a downside. With the Quest 2 I have no issues with the motion system, with the Aero I have to tune down the shaking. @markkovalcson7243
@markkovalcson7243 Жыл бұрын
Do you have an older direct drive steering system or motion system? My hardware has excellent EMI shielding. The SC2 Pro, NLRv3 and later D-Box Gen5 are all very well shielded and my Index had no issues with them. Earlier SimuCube systems with industrial motors as well as SFX-100 and PT-Actuator systems did have EMI issues. Some Index owners spent time to shield their motion systems and I know at least one person who applied multiple Ferrite cores to the USB cables. This was a big issue four years ago and there are many solutions out there, but you may need to dig for them. I haven't heard of many issues with more modern hardware. When I got my Varjo Aero, I heard they were more sensitive and I preemptively put a large ferrite core on the USB cable coming back from my rig's 10 port USB hub as well as the USB cable from the headset. I never noticed an issue with the Aero either. I should probably test it without the ferrite cores. The Aero has about half as many lighthouse sensors on it as the Index or BSB. So you can easily grab the side of the Aero and block enough sensors for it to lose tracking, but otherwise it tracks well.

If you haven't, numbers alone certainly won't convince you of what the experience is like. It's always been the flowery language - "the vision" - from the beginning in the 80's. If the headset lenses stayed perfectly centered on your eyeballs the whole time and only pivoted from from that anchor point centered on your eyes rather than sliding from side to side and up and down like the headset does, you are correct that it would be a lot less noticeable. So if you move your head to the left quickly and the headset lags, you are now looking more to the left on the lenses than your location. Then when it catches back up it would be correct, and then it would move past where your head stopped and continue so you are looking to the right on the lenses. Your eyes will do their best to track what you are looking at in the view that is moving relative to your face and do a reasonable job damping some of this out. But there are limits. I've found it disorienting in some games when I'm in a panic situation looking around quickly. But YMMV. Any given headset may fit your face better than another. My Rift fits my face really well. My Index has more play and my Aero even more play, plus extra momentum.

I used a scale 3D printed model of the Bigscreen Beyond in the video. I should see my headset in September. I'll be able to say more then. There is one Bigscreen Beyond tester that streams his racing in iRacing. He says that he has zero fatigue with the BSB headset even after many hours and that it is cool and has no fogging. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLddoriIr9m7dX0.html&ab_channel=BrainFizzVRLLC

Some of the differences will depend on your rig. With a full motion rig like mine, I'm expecting the BSB visuals to feel more natural and be clearer in Rally when my rig is shaking me around just because my headset won't be bouncing relative to my face. I'm expecting that the huge difference will be between feeling a headset hanging on my head and barely feeling anything. I'm also expecting the BSB to feel cooler. My understanding from others is that the BSB has more contrast because the microOLED blacks are pitch black and the colors are more vibrant than the Aero. Past that, I will need to see for myself when I get mine.

hope bigscreen send you some goggles to test out. i havnt seen anyone from the sim community talk about these and have written them off cause of fov and brightness. but has it been tested ?

There was a recent update to the displays where they increased the horizontal FOV. I've seen the FOV values for a few people testing the headset using the and it is similar horizontally to the Aero and Crystal with current glass lens. The brightness is between 73-83nits and based on what I've heard some people are setting the brightness control between 0 and up to 130% depending on their preferences. The key they have said is that because the interface is molded to your face and there is ZERO light leakage, your eyes adapt and it looks fine. I'll find out for myself when I get mine. I'm just a customer with an order in. I hope to receive mine in late September. As far as no one in the sim community talking about these, I would have to ask where you have been. I know a number of sim racers and some flight guys who have ordered the BSB. And some of these guys own Aero's and a couple have ordered Crystals as well. So I'm sure we will get plenty of comparisons.

FYI just had a BSB user describe his 3 hours of racing in iRacing. Sounds very promising.

What about the quest 3?What are your thoughts.

It all depends on your use case. Meta sells volume and has good bang for the buck. The downside is that using a link cable means noticeable compression artifacts, if you are PCVR user. But compared to a Q2, the Q3 appears better in all ways. More FOV, separate displays for physical IPD adjustments, more processing power. The center of gravity is closer to your face, so there is less momentum moving around and it's not nearly as heavy as some other headsets. Meta has one of the only inside/out tracking systems that works well in terms of latency and accuracy. So for a relatively inexpensive entry to VR it can be a good option. Since I have no need for stand alone operation, I prefer an enthusiast PCVR headset with a displayport connection and ideally no battery to deal with. YMMV.

I gave you an answer. Please leave it at that and stop repetitively spamming responses. And everyone else please don't turn this into a war zone. This video has a very simple focus.

If you are referring to those I quoted. I don't think so. I've heard them say many things about many headsets over the years.
