What's the difference between an astronomer and an astrophysicist? NASA's Michelle Thaller explains that these terms are used interchangeably: both are physicists who study objects and phenomena in the sky. How can you become an astronomer? There is a defined path to take: Do an undergrad degree in astrophysics, physics, mathematics or computer science, then complete a doctorate in astrophysics. You could also work with astronomers by studying engineering and building telescopes. In this fascinating explanation of what an astronomer's day-to-day job actually looks like, Thaller shines a light on the unexpected skills you might need and answers the question on every ambitious astronomer-to-be's mind: How will I know what to discover?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHELLE THALLER
Dr. Michelle Thaller is an astronomer who studies binary stars and the life cycles of stars. She is Assistant Director of Science Communication at NASA. She went to college at Harvard University, completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, Calif. then started working for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) Spitzer Space Telescope. After a hugely successful mission, she moved on to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), in the Washington D.C. area. In her off-hours often puts on about 30lbs of Elizabethan garb and performs intricate Renaissance dances. For more information, visit
NASA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
MICHELLE THALLER: There are a lot of people that are fascinated by astronomy, and they think, hey, you can actually get a job where it's your life to make new discoveries, to actually work with larger NASA missions. So how do you get this gig? How do you become an astronomer?
For some strange reason, I always wanted to be an astronomer, ever since I was a very small child. I think for a while I wanted to be an astronaut, and then I actually realized I was afraid of flying and I did not want to be an astronaut. But I loved space, and I could just never get the questions out of my head. I was told many times I didn't have the right personality to be a scientist. That really didn't matter at all. That turned out not to be true.
But here are some of the things that kind of need to happen. So if you want to become a professional research astronomer, one of the things you will have to have is a doctorate in astronomy.
Now, there are a lot of other ways to be involved in astronomy. I work with a lot of people who are engineers who help us build the telescopes or the instruments that we use. They, for the most part, do not have PhDs. They may have an undergraduate degree in engineering. Some of them have master's degrees. But usually, they actually start working in a more practical way, building the instruments, doing some testing. They start that fairly early in their careers.
But to be an astronomer, you do have to get a doctorate. So there is a fairly well-defined path for that. So you go through high school, and after high school, you can apply to any number of colleges that have degree programs in either physics, or mathematics, or computer science. Or, in some cases, they'll actually have full degree programs in astronomy or astrophysics. And these days, those two words, astronomy and astrophysics, are used fairly interchangeably in a professional setting. So if you're majoring in astronomy, you're basically a physicist majoring in things that are in the sky. So astrophysicist, astronomer, pretty much the same thing.
So what I did is, I actually did go to a university-I went to Harvard University-that had a major in astrophysics as an undergrad. And so we took pretty much all of the physics requirements for a physics degree, all the math that's involved in that, too, but then there were specialized classes in topics in astronomy. We'd read papers about the Big Bang. We'd get together and we'D go to observatories to learn how telescopes work. And there were classes in things like how does a star work, how does a supernova explosion work, what is a galaxy like?
And these really are physics classes. They involve a lot of math, usually calculus-figuring out how a galaxy evolves over time, how all the different stars work, how gravity affects everything. So there certainly is a good deal of math and physics involved.
But then, as you become a professional astronomer, while you certainly know the basics of that and...

My entire life I've been obsessed with anything outside of Earth. I didn't think much of it until we did a solar system course in grade six. It opened my eyes a lot. I'm a highschool student now that still hasn't 100% decided what I want to do with my life. Whenever I ask myself, "What is my dream job?" it always ends up being an Astronomer. My parents are trying to push me into becoming a doctor, but that just isn't my dream. I decided that I wanted to be an Astronomer long ago. I'm going to chase my dream and if that dream changes on the way, at least I won't ever wonder what life could have been like. Thank you for this video, it helped me a lot

@@desinasa4102 The astronomer dream is still strong! Although, I’ve looked into other options along the way as well. Now I’m debating whether I should still follow through with becoming an astronomer or maybe becoming a psychologist. My parents still try to pressure me into becoming a doctor, but they backed off once I said I was considering the psychologist career, which makes sense. I just wish I knew whether I was interested in becoming a psychologist because of genuine interest, or by the toxic influence of my parents. It’s a shame your parents pressured you into becoming a doctor, we only have one life and our parents shouldn’t be the ones deciding what we do, yk? That’s literally CRAZY because I’m experiencing the exact same thing!! Honestly I thought that I was alone for a while 💀 I mean, being a doctor is actually quite interesting, but it’s just not everyone’s " dream career " and I feel like our parents can’t understand that, so for a while after their pressure, I also thought of becoming a psychologist because let’s say that’s it’s something I’m interested in, but once I entered high school, I noticed that I genuinely enjoyed learning about maths and physics and I started researching a lot about astronomy which led me to this video. I wish you all the best, and I hope that y’all parents will finally figure out that we’re not meant to be doctors 🥲

If you want to be an astronomer for more than 5 years and you like the job, just do it. I know I'm a random person and I am not qualified to talk about this with my age, but if you like a job, and you truly love it, do not look at: how hard is it going to be and how big of a pain is it going to be to do these stuff. If you like the topic that you are learning about, it's going to be a lot easier. All I'm saying is if you like something then you will learn it effectively and fast. If you don't want to be an astronomer anymore, just don't take my advice. But if you wanted to be one for 5 years... You must like astronomy. It's better if you go for a hard dream than if you go for an easier one, but you won't enjoy it. Please consider the whole thing again. This is only my advice and I am really young , but I think it makes sense to reconsider your decision. Most of your life you will be working. So it's better if you have a job that you are happy with, than having a job that you are not enjoying.

Okay, I grew up through school very good at English. Unfortunately, I sucked at maths. I was so bad at maths that buying these with cash sends me into a panic. But I love space! And this is my dream job and sadly I didn’t really realise this was a real job until now (I mean, I kinda knew about scientists but I thought it was much broader), so I’m currently finishing my last year of high school and I’m not doing any science or maths subjects because I was failing them, despite my passion. But I’m blowing the competition away in English. But this video really made me realise that I still have a chance here because of my writing abilities... but, I’m just going to need to get myself around the whole maths and physics obstacle. But this is my DREAM job, so I am going into this head first, self educating myself before I need to make the big choice of subject for university. Any advice, please leave below. How can I self-educate myself in maths and physics despite being very slow in that field.

It blows my mind every time I go to one. Make sure to write notes! •Research about the other subjects that you need in order to become an astronomer (eg computer science) •Master Maths cause you’ll need it a lot •Lastly, write notes Write notes about your surroundings and all the questions you have in your head about space and all the theories you have. Keep a note pad with you. I hope this helped!

_First time this much early!_ I don't consider it an achievement but still happy And yes, I agree with you Ma'am! That one must also have a professional way of writing the professionals, good skills in that. It's also a crucial aspect when you're in your early phase of being either an astrophysicist, astronomer or a computer-scientist!

I'm a graduating psychology major getting my AA. For the longest time, I've always had the desire to know more about physics, space, math and the like but once I sat down to get into it, I'd feel myself get discouraged and increasingly disappointed that I couldnt understand. I'm about to go into a new job and every so often, I'll watch videos on astronomy or physics, thinking what I could've been. I still have hope one day I'll be able to change my work ethic and work through my disappointments and gradually start to understand, but until then...I'll be dreaming about that day...

Im 23 years old, and I'm in the Army. When I was in grade school, I remember just how intimidated I was with math. It took a long time to be able to understand the math I was learning. But ever since I was a young child, space exploration and space travel always caught my eye. My love for space science has grown endlessly. I KIND OF liked my science classes in school, but they weren't at all about space. They mainly just stuck in the realm of plants and animals. I wish now that I had taken school a lot more seriously when I was younger. But that's ok! Right now I'm preparing myself for college. I wish to obtain my bachelors in either astrophysics or astronomy. Even though I know how much math will be involved, I'm not as intimidated by it anymore, because through my studies, I'm noticing that I find it much easier for me to grasp things in math that I used to. So I know its not impossible. Im very. excited to be able to contribute to the world of space science. My great grandfather actually was one of the head engineers who worked on the Apollo 11 missions. Thats such an inspiration! Im so proud to have that apart of my life. Its almost as if the universe is calling me in a way... :)

I think that black holes are balls of liquid galactic star and that explains why stuff spins around then the way they do.. if a star collapses and the left over mass cools because of the loss of heat, (thermodynamics) then it will condense and shrink because of the CHANGE OF STATE .. it must become a gravity monster from pulling stuff into itself. When a star touches the event horizon it will be caught up and begin to unravel.. as this gas is pulled in by gravity alone it isn’t enough to fuse the gas and liquid star ball left over.. so it spins around the ball at light speed causing friction and temperature fluctuations.. as time slows down the atoms electrons slow and cool becoming a liquid and bind to the star.. (black hole)

I love astronomy and everything related to space I would love to become an astronomer and i think i have what it takes.(Passion of course, good grades 95% avg, i work my ass off when i want something and i don’t get discouraged at all) But im just unsure about the job openings. I live in Canada so a lot less people a lot less jobs and i don’t know if an astronomer has a decent salary? That’s why I have considered aerospace engineering. Working on Rockets Satellites even planes I would love that. I know the salary is great too. I don’t really know what Im asking here but if anyone has advices maybe on what I should be studying, if you know the salary or something about job openings. Thank you :)

Ugh...I hate seeing this kind-of stuff now... I ALWAYS wanted to be an astronomer... I am now 30 and a recovering opiate addict. But when I told people I ALWAYS wanted to work on the last frontier that things can still be discovered and they always rolled their eyes. I know you might not reading this but I am STILL motivated to do this even thought I'm very old to go to college. I graduated with an 89% in high school without EVER ONCE taking home a book to do homework. I never did a single stitch of homework other than my senior project, which I got a 100% on... When I left school that was it, I didn't do homework because I listened and understood what was being told to me so getting alot of 0's on homework hurt my overall GPA. I'd do ANYTHING to be someone's apprentice in this Field.... If you've made it this far and you're a younger person, go after your dream! Seriously, I'm not joking, go and do what you need to to achieve your dream and go discover something new to change the world! I'd do ANYTHING to be in a position like that... ANYTHING... Enjoy your day guys/gals and get out there and get what you want!

I now only do English subjects which I completely regret, although I’m top student in English. I’m working so hard right now in my own time by reading countless non-fiction books until I can get my mind to the level that can comprehend calculus and physics, before I attempt to learn it. I will follow my dreams and do this for you and others like you! I just have to learn basic maths again...
