Let it snow! It's time to add some snowy scenery to our HO scale Christmas layout, the Santa Fe & Saint Nick. I mix up a batch or two of realistic and durable scenic snow using common items from the local discount store, then share a few techniques for applying it to the scenery.
Thanks for watching!
Dave

Awesome job Dave! Funny how adding white can change the feeling of a warm climate into a cold one.

Dave. The snow scene you have created looks like Bryce Canyon National Park Utah Red Rocks, winter scene photo., This looks amazing, your red rocks look stellar !! Conifers look good also. Can't wait to see the foreground town you are creating. Great tips on snow making !! Thanks for sharing your inspirational vision !!.

Who would've thought, a jazz version of jingle bells, model railroading, and high desert scenery would mesh so well!! Great vid Dave!

17:32 It's funny seeing a snowy railroad terrain and a haunted railroad terrain, two completely different designs, in the same shot. All three layouts existing together is like the multiverse colliding! Maybe it's the Dave Dimension?

wow! Can't put into words how much I think your layout is fantastic, I just started my N gauge railway and want to do the southwest theme like yours, but have absolutely no idea how to do it, I have been watching a lot of KZfaq channels and I've been purchasing the tools I think I will need. But still did not have any idea how to do it, just came across your channel and I am in heaven, it's like that is exactly what I want my layout to look like, (but it wont be close)I do a lot of trail riding here in Arizona and I go up to Sedona and I love the rock formations haven't made it MOAB yet. so now I will be able to look how you carved your rock formations and give it a go, my 12 year old grandson rides his bike over to my house quite often as he only lives five blocks away so he's all excited to help me.

Okay, the snow looks beautiful, but might there be a drifted in area where the train had to plow its way through?

Great looking scenery. Almost a pity to cover it with snow, but I guess that's the purpose of the layout.

The baking soda isn't a good idea with anything but the dryer climates, even with paint mixed in, I've had a lot of issues using it for snow with older things because it will yellow if there is any moisture in the air which is not good at all for anything you'll have for a while.

Thank you for such a practical and detailed series on how to build something like this. I love all your videos and now, as a beginner, I feel like I can actually follow along and do it too. Any chance you could do a video or a series on the best "basics" set of tools and materials you recommend? You have so much great stuff but I have to imagine there is a core set that would be less overwhelming for a newbie :)

What a great way to make snow!! I think I will give it a try and make a diorama with it! This would also work very well for a blizzard driven snow effect!! Thanks for the ideas and the video!

The fake snow looks great, and the application is realistic. Do you find a need to varnish the snow to make it easier to clean and dust? I find that white "stuff" and acrylic paint is like a magnet to dust and fine dirt.

You're renting your studio, right? Are you worried at all about paint dripping down onto that hardwood floor? One reason why I've hesitated to paint my layout is because I'm renting and I don't want to deal with the hassle of prepping the floor to catch paint drips. Is that not as much of a problem with vinyl paint? Or are you just that good at this point? 😉

The floor had a lot of paint on it already when I moved in, but I still try to be careful and clean up as I go. Cardboard and drop cloths work wonders.
