The chain is probably the element of the MTB that, together with the brake pads, deteriorates more quickly.

Be careful, because a damaged chain could ruin the teeth of the crowns and sprockets forcing you to replace them and shell out a lot of pennies.
Not only that, but the chain could suddenly open in the middle of a spin, as it has done to me a couple of times before.
If you are lucky and manage to repair it, once you get home it is advisable to replace it immediately.
Finding the right chain requires a bit of smattering, because many are not very clear how the choice should be made, whether based on the number of sprockets from the cassette, or based on the type of crankset (triple, double or single chainring) or according to the length of the gear cage.
In short, the confusion is great, and it gets worse once the chain is identified, we find models with prices ranging from a few euros up to 70 euros.
the chain must be constantly inspected and replaced before wear exceeds the critical point
There is a tool called 'chain gauge' that measures the wear of the chain and costs very few euros
It is used by placing the hook on a shirt and bringing the 0.75 pad inside the shirt.
If the buffer does not fit, the chain is in good condition.
Should it enter, turn the gauge and measure the same link praying that the 1 pad does not enter, because if so it means that the chain is too long and you could have compromised the crown and sprockets.
If, on the other hand, the 1 pad does not enter, but the 0.75 one had entered, hurry to change the chain
For the choice of the MTB chain we only need to know the number of speeds of our sprocket set
The number of crowns or the length of the cage does not affect the choice.
Once you have found the chain, you may notice that there are several in price. This is due to the fact that the chains can have different weight and smoothness or have coatings for a longer duration over time.
Light chains have internal or external perforated links, or with empty fixing pins.
The resistance of the chain can therefore vary according to the design, structure and material
The construction materials are almost all in steel. For super light ones, the through pins are made of titanium.
Some manufacturers use titanium nitride, with a golden color, because it is more resistant to rust and offers greater smoothness.
The best thing would be to buy the chain designed for your transmission, as it is the one that those who designed the group have considered the best for the group itself, otherwise you risk canceling the mechanical design refinement of the chain itself.
There are also compatible chains, such as YABAN or KMC, which are universal for all drivetrains. Also in this case it will be enough to choose the chain based on the number of speeds.
The counterfeit
The chains are now almost all equipped with a false link, which however must be of the same type as the chain, so if you have an 11V chain you cannot use a false link produced for 12 speeds.
During your outings, never forget to bring a spare false jersey, it can save you the ride.
I strongly advise you to equip yourself with a tool to open or close the false link, some links can be found in the description
In case you were out and about, a simple shoe string might be enough to open the false shirt
TIP 1
The introduction of 11, 12 speeds has started the production of asymmetrical chains that must be mounted in the right direction.
The direction is usually indicated both on the package and on the chain
TIP 2
If your chain is designed with a particular technology, for example the Hyperglide, you will need to purchase an identical one.
TIP 3
The chain must be replaced every time the cassette is changed:
TIP 4
Some chains do not have a false link, it is however possible to mount one compatible with the number of speeds
TIP 5
to clean the chain it is not recommended to open the false link and remove the chain,
TIP 7
Purchased chains are always longer than what is needed
TIP 8
the length of the link, which for all chains in the world is 1 ″ (equal to 25.4mm).
