We know that sometimes there are 'ideal' or 'perfect' ways to do a project, we love hearing how you'd do a project differently and what you'd use. For our projects, often we like to show how to do a project differently or with what we have available at the time. All hardware hacking can be fun and enjoyable!

Very neat idea, I especially like the screen you used which I assume is you can make water resistant to prevent all the rain we get
@hifromkatie
@hifromkatie 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the screen is bonded to the underside of a piece of glass, so would be easy to waterproof. This one might be a little water res resistant but I wouldn't rely on it as the 3d printing isn't that solid. It would be great to try and make it water resistant/proof in the future though, as would be much more useful

Excellent work. What's cool about projects like these is that they're very customizable for your needs. My only modification would be to put some kind of shade/hood on the screen and angle the whole unit so it can be read in direct sunlight. Small screens like these usually aren't the most readable on sunny days, unfortunately. ;)
@hifromkatie
@hifromkatie 2 жыл бұрын
That would be good. After using it a few times, I'll agree on the readability in sunlight

Ho Katie, this project was really interesting to me because I would like to build an arduino based artificial horizon and I am struggling a lot to find a suitable round display. The 4dsystems one you used is really nice. I especially like the Workspace4 software which makes the display progeammjtn really easy. Yet, neither at 4Dsystems I can find a 2.4" round display. Can you perhaps point me to other LCD display manufacturers with that size among their products? Kind regards

If you rode onto a weight scale before cycling and entered that into your computer could you determine your power usage using the accelerometer? Power meters give the power expended in terms of watts, if you had enough information you could probably calculate your power usage with telemetry data. There is also wind speed, drag and gear ratios to think about... maybe just put some pressure pads on the pedals and measure the downward force!
@notreallydaedalus
@notreallydaedalus 2 жыл бұрын
You would need either a perfectly flat surface and travel in a straight line, or you would need some fairly complex sensing and calculations, to determine power from motion and mass. One of those things that's easier to do in theory than in practice. I have a single axis accelerometer-based performance tester intended for use in cars, developed in the late 1990s. You have you get a perfectly flat stretch of road and drive in a straight line for moderately-accurate results -- any slope is read as horizontal force. It can also measure skid-pad G forces, but body roll throws it off as it starts confusing gravity for centrifugal force. A modern six-axis accelerometer commonly used in smartphones could probably account for multi-axis motion in the calculations.

Exactly what I thought. It would detect one revolution wherever it was. All you need to know is the circumference of the wheel.
@hifromkatie
@hifromkatie 2 жыл бұрын
It probably didn't! I set the old one up when I bought the bike to take to uni which was about 15 years ago, (it was my daily transport for 4 years). Tbh I can't remember how it was set up, now I think about it, I'm pretty sure it didn't need to know, was just wheel size.

Neat project. Of course, the simplest solution is to just download a GPS speedometer and distance app for your phone, but where's the fun in that?
@hifromkatie
@hifromkatie 2 жыл бұрын
I started with that (why I had the bike frame bag with the window on the top), But found I was easily distracted, and quickly checking what the message /notifications were each time it buzzed whilst riding (on off road paths). It's a habit I was finding hard to break, so with this the phone can be safely in my backpack and I'm not tempted to take my eyes off the road

@RottnRobbie

@@user-rs2gv4vk1g Um, OK. But then it seems to me that your request wasn't clearly stated. If you want more than the automated captioning, then you should probably have said "Please pay to have professional subtitles for the hearing impaired added to your videos". and also - I can't vouch for general reliability, but I don't think the auto captions are as inaccurate as you're implying. I have good hearing, so I re-watched the video to compare the captioning with what I heard, and it was surprisingly (to me) accurate. Admittedly the lack of punctuation is a bit of an issue, but I only identified two very minor errors. Once when she said "twelve oh six" it was transcribed as "12 a6", and the second error was when she said the words ".. or this part", which was on screen as "... all this part". I didn't even attempt a word count, but that must be well over a 99% accuracy rate.

I find it odd that she considers other countries not having daylight saving time, but completely ignores the fact that only a very few places in the world run on UTC (i.e. "Greenwich" time).
