Our Dream: An around the world bike tour. Can we pass the first challenge? Riding 1000km across Germany in 2 weeks with fully loaded touring bicycles.
In episode three we cover week two of our final big test, a trip from the north of Germany to the south. Our journey continues in Kassel where we had our first badly needed rest day. The first week wasn't exactly reassuring: we are exhausted, Arev has swollen ankles and the first proper hills are still ahead of us.
After covering over 430 kms in the first six days, we start day 8 by following the D9 “romantic road” long-distance cycling path along the Fulda river.
We get hosted by incredible people while on the road for free:

Learn to travel like the dog. Yes he can travel far on his little legs, but every so often he stops, stands very still and takes in the sounds, he smells the air, he looks around him and if he sees something interesting he explores it and then he moves on. It took me 60 years to learn how to really travel and appreciate all the little things rather than rush on to the next thing.

Wow, is it really forbidden? In Sweden we have the so called "allemansrätten" which means - in short - that you can wild camp basically anywhere for 24 hours.
@AmazingWorldBikeTour
@AmazingWorldBikeTour Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately yes. We kind of understand why though. First of all, Germans, and then also it has a somewhat dense population. In the state of Brandenburg (around Berlin) it is allowed to camp for the night on public land.

You mean the wait for the video? 😀Yeah we figure that we need to get much quicker. But we literally spend every free second of the last two weeks on this release. Cycling is amazing. Sure there is some problems everywhere and every day but also it seems like that there is always a solution and some many fantastic experiences we could not get else.

@@AmazingWorldBikeTour - I did mean the video, yes. I was reminded at the end, with the teaser for your France travels, that we're looking at footage from earlier in the season, before the weather turned colder. We switched to winter riding kit around November 13, here in Barcelona, so presumably your Germany footage is from August / September. Hopefully you're spending the winter staying warm. We ride throughout the year here, though we stay out of the Pyrenees once the snow and ice arrives.

Haha, thanks! There is many nice long-distance cycling roads in Germany. So far we especially loved the D9 from the 2nd video, the stretch EV6 we did in the first France video. To be honest, despite the hard moments at the end of the day bicycle touring is just great :-)

@@AmazingWorldBikeTour Thanks for the tips. We love cycling and have integrated it into our day to day lives. But we only recently have had cycling holidays. Our challenge is getting a ferry from UK to Dunkirk and cycling/ getting a train to the Ruhr, Rhine or Mosel. We know all 3 well but not be cycle. Can't wait to change it. Do you know a good app to book our bikes on trains in Germany, if so please let is know! Thanks 😊
@AmazingWorldBikeTour
@AmazingWorldBikeTour Жыл бұрын
@Dave from Teddington on regional trains in Germany you just by an extra ticket for the bicycle. On the faster IC, EC and ICE trains you have to reserve a spot for the bicycle. Those spots sell out really fast, so you have to book well in advance. If you can't take the train for whatever reasons you are usually out of luck. Booking the bicycle ticket is usually able through bahn.de the official homepage of Deutsche Bahn. Don't know how that works with trains that go over a border but knowing the DB it is probably next to impossible. Our tip, use the regional trains if you need one.

Nice videos so far. You got a new subscriber. Did you find a way to stay dry on the rain? I am looking for a rain jacket for my next tour (one week in the coast of Portugal). But it looks more and more that finding the way to stay dry for long periods under the rain is like trying to find the holy grail.

Nice! If you like the beginning you're gonna love were its going 😄 Our top tip by now is having a close look at the weather forecast 😅 Other than that, we prefer poncho over rain jackets because one gets some air.

@@AmazingWorldBikeTour Last year I used a poncho for my 1 week trip. It was a bit of a pain with wind. And it let water in. Maybe it was to thin. This year will try a rain jacket under the poncho, and stay out of strong rain preferably 😅
@AmazingWorldBikeTour
@AmazingWorldBikeTour 7 ай бұрын
I think rain jacket under a poncho is a good idea, if it’s not too hot and when the rain is heavy. Because often it’s still cold and windy after the rain and you can take off the poncho and leave the jacket, that’s not too wet, on. Arev did that a lot in France.

Good video I liked the little elevation map on the bottom of the screen Also I learned that in Germany bike paths are numbered (R3). Can you elaborate on this system? The closest that we have here in NA is names. Some names are just given by the bike association like southern tier. Others might refer to the old rail road that the bike path replaced like Kettle Valley trail. Pacific coast trail is self explanatory.
@AmazingWorldBikeTour
@AmazingWorldBikeTour Жыл бұрын
Wow, I wrote a whole book and youtube comment is like "Ooops something went wrong..." Thank you T64. Obviously the cycling routes also all have names, but there is several layers of long-distance routes in Europe. Longest are the EuroVelo which span the whole continent. We briefly used EV3 and EV15 so far. They obviously also use the national routes in the countries. Example would be something like the D-9 we have been using a lot. There is 12 of the "Deutschland-Routen" signed by the ministry of transport. Also there a state routes like the R3 which is one of 9 routes signed by the state of Hessen. All of the are usually interconnected and use the same physical roads from time to time. You can literally get everywhere using them. The guess is the numbers just make it easier to sign and reference them, instead of using the long elaborate names. There is many routes without a number though.
