You don't have to spend hundreds to get a folding bike that you can use for an international cycle tour. Second hand folding bikes can be excellent value if you are prepared to do any repairs yourself! Small repairs and replacing any worn out parts can be done with simple tools and these light weight bikes can be stored easily in a cupboard or under a bed.

I just completed a tour across Florida and had to stealth camp multiple times. Love the advice in this video as it reflects my experiences as well as taught me some new tricks. I use an Amok (a kind of camping hammock) so I just need two trees a suitable distance apart and voila, I am well hidden in most situations.

Nice video, which I would like to add: - Buy a tent in natural colour for camouflage. Most tents are either dark green, tan or brown, choose the colour on your environment. Avoid light green, that is high viz. Even in moonlight at night. Also avoid very dark green, that looks like black from a distance, also sticks out. - Buy a dome or tunnel shape tent, because it looks like a bush or young tree from a distance. - The lower the height of your tent, the better. For example, use two low rise 1-person tents, then one big 2-person tent. - The cherry on the cake is to put a camouflage net on top of your. But it is extra weight and bulk to carry around. Especially on a folding bike. Tie the net down, that is does NOT flutter in the wind. That fluttering will attract attention. When you reached your stealth campsite: Do NOT move or make sounds. Both attract attention. Like Hobocyclist already says in this video, pitch your tent in the dark. Stay low for concealment.

You got it! All these are top tips for stealth camping. Its not always easy finding a dark or earth tone tent, it seems like some of the big stores like decathlon favor colours like silver, light blue, bright green or orange. I have used a camo tarp to cover my tent before but usually only when im going to keep it hidden in the same spot for several days. Generally on a bike tour I will camp out in different spots each night along the way :)

Hey Andy! Awesome videos as always. Is there ever a concern of going too far off the beaten path and getting lost in the woods? Also! Can you maybe make a video of how you handle keeping clean on your big bike trips? (showering, laundry, etc.)

Oh yeah I’ve been asked before how I keep clean, I just don’t look in the mirror as much on a cycle tour - that helps! 😂 As far as getting lost in the woods, yes & no, since I travel without following a map I’m kind of always lost when I’m in a foreign country - so yeah France comes to mind, we were lost around Normandy in the forests but always close to a path or road. In our case we just followed the canal until we reached a main road. I’m not worried about getting lost generally. In Nz forests there is very thick undergrowth & canopy where even a gps doesn’t work it’s so easy to get lost off the trails so I’m careful but still often get lost- this is without my bike, way up in the hills. I just stop, look for the sun, find gps signal and plot a course. Never had to be rescued 👍🌲🚲

I'm not sure if this is still being offered by Walmart locations but I used to simply pull up close to where the RV owners were staying & find a spot on the grass & pitch my tent. It was kind of funny since I was having more fun than the RV owners were with less hassle & expense. Many times I was invited for a meal or a beer & was only asked to move one time. I have to try it again next season if it is still offered by Walmart.

@@WindsongPodcast Actually it turned out fine. It was really early in the morning & security was making their rounds & I told them I was with the RV people & would be gone in a few hours. Luckily, I think they were more curious about seeing a tent set up on the grass than they were about me staying there. Might be a different story now though with all the homeless people living in tents everywhere.
