The battle royal - pitting the convenience and style of Pelotons cycling studio in your home, with Zwift's fun and fast virtual cycling environment, as favoured by the pros!
To enable fair comparison for the budding indoor cyclist, we pair Zwift with Wattabike's smart bike, the Atom - to provide a package at a comparable price point and ease of use.
Both have their advocates and champions, and neither are inexpensive, so tune in to invest wisely and discover which is best for you.

Great videos. Just ordered the Atom V2 to replace an old road bike / wheel on smart trainer which i have been using with Zwift for the last 12 months just to see if i liked it, which i do. These days for Outdoors I prefer to ride my Mountain bike off road so i decided on the Atom from you reviews etc the best choice indoors for me. Like you I use the gym for strength training and with the Atom and my old Concept 2 rower which i might try on Zwift gives plenty of variety to keep me engaged. Of course I can always do the odd spin class at the gym too.👍

Hi Lee - thanks for reaching out. I think getting back into cycling will be the perfect way to get you back into good health. 2.5years on I still love my WattBike - and it’s been a life changing health and fitness investment for me: through gradually building up the distance cycled and also the intensity and being consistent in the eating (not denying myself anything - but being mindful ) I went from 74kg to 64kg whilst having fun and enjoying the process . Check out some of my training vids - and my recent fat loss series - and you’ll see what I do to stay in shape . Hi Phil I've tried both Peloton and Zwift and other cycling apps in the last 3 years. As someone who's pressed for time with work, doesn't find the roads safe and no longer pursuing road cycling seriously and is taking a more "casual" approach I would definitely pick Peloton for the 20-30-45min blasts all day every day for the human element of coaching. Christian Vande Velde has recently been brought back to Peleton for the "pro cyclist rides" and together with the scenic rides Peloton offers suites the more casual me to ride without any objective as long as I'm fit these days. Matt Wilpers offers "Power Zone Endurance Rides" which you have to do a Peloton FTP test to get the power numbers. If I was still focused on goals and objectives and dialing in to becoming a better cyclist in the outdoor world then sure Zwift/Mywhoosh and other similar programs would still be for me.

Thanks for this. We call Peloton ‘pay-a-ton’ over state side. But it’s all in good fun. Value is in the eye of the beholder. I get hell from my partner when I admit what I pay for good bibs when he insists a pair of shorts is good enough. Sooooo.... we don’t discuss my cycling values and I don’t judge others for theirs. I hadn’t come across the WattBike before. Using a fluid (dumb but effective) trainer I admit I like the WattBike concept over the Peloton. Again personal values. Like integration w/ Zwift, Trainer Road, etc.. (I.e. choices). I work with a cycling coach in the winter months and we use Zwift and Zoom (with Today’s Plan for analytics). I recently pulled trigger on Wahoo smart trainer. Arrives in 3 weeks. Will look to see what you have in archive on them. Thanks for willing to share those tough workouts. Great informative video! This is my position, I'm a Zwift user who is looking at getting the Atom but my wife wants the Peloton bike. So we are at loggerheads and my job is to put my case forward. My main argument is that you are not tied to the Atom bike as you are with Peloton. What would happen if price increases occur and you no longer want to be held to ransom. You are left with a bike that you can no longer use other then with a Peloton subscription/app. I also don't want to get something that is too cycle enthusiast orientated as I know that will put my wife off completely. I want her to 'want' to do the sessions, so I can see the pull of the Peloton bike also. I need some advice!
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi GM - and thanks for the feedback 🙏. I agree with all your points. The Peleton is amazing if you like a spin class - but otherwise is not versatile and nor is it a smart bike. Your wife may be able to link the Atom to the Peleton App - and then it should be a case of your wife paying the monthly subscription and joining the training session of her choice and manually changing the power on the Atom as instructed by the Peleton Coaches (noting you have to change the power manually on the Peleton bike also). I think she would enjoy some of group training sessions on Zwift which are tailored to her FTP. Especially the ones with shorter punchier intervals. Hope thy is helps 👌. And please do subscribe if you haven’t already 🙏

Thanks Ross🙏🙏. I recently rode the Peleton again a few times whilst holidaying in Miami . I really loved it . If you want the fitness to translate to outside, I’d still say Zwift and the WattBike Atom are best, because the resistance changes as the terrain goes up and down. And in Zwift you can adjust the trainer difficulty to replicate an easier gearing and keep a higher cadence on the steep gradients - to replicate the mountain bike

I have a Peloton and think its great, wife loves it too and whilst it’s doesn’t have the bells and whistles of a Wattbike, it’s a great workout. For the price though, peloton does very little extra. It should have accurate wattage (mine appears 10-15% down). No left and right bias help. App and platform is actually pretty basic and not the slickest. The motivation of the instructors though is a big help and keeps you interested especially if wife using it too. So a good all round bike. Plenty of people snobby about peloton online but riding position same as wattbike.

Chris Sanders thanks for your perspective Chris - and 100% I agree Peleton is an amazing product. I really enjoyed my workout - it was super interactive and absorbing, and I think it hard to beat the spin classes! I think the points you make about lack of versatility are the ones that make me favour the WattBike - but if you and your wife prefer the sprint classes (which are incredible - and some of the extremely tough!) then I think it’s hard to beat a Peleton 👍

Great vid. I’ve had zwift for a few years and got a Wattbike atom next generation about 2 yrs ago. Back then peloton was more expensive and seemed to be just spinning classes, where zwift was free riding, group rides, workouts and racing. The ‘game’ element of zwift is motivating. The workouts are really good, tailored to your own ftp and on screen instructions. Loads of challenges and events and missions. There are many mass participation events like tour de zwift and tour of Watopia. New routes added, and ‘real world’ routes. I’ve yet to do a Wattbike hub ride. I really need to look at my pedalling efficiency and practice putting power on the whole revolution and not just on the down stroke. Is there a way of running both hub and zwift? If I’m doing miles on the hub I don’t want to lose that distance on zwift. Just need my knee to stop swelling and tightening 😢😢 frustrating.

It’s brilliant! Main Adjustments are so quick. The lag is fixed on the new version of the Wattbike once you learn how to ride smoothly and keep cadence steady. Even on the old version you can see from Phil’s videos it works fine.

The wattbike is a brilliant concept, if you're not able to switch your road bike in and out of a direct drive trainer which also costs around a £1000 Then for convenience sake Wattbike wins. @BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
My pleasure, Krystal 🙏. I think it may be possible to run the Peleton App on the WattBike - but I have not done this myself. The Peleton bike is very much a spin class style bike, with a torque control which you manually turn to change the resistance - this means no lag as you change up the resistance to go harder. However it is not a smart bike, and won’t work or be very good on Zwift etc, because the resistance wont change automatically as the gradient changes. The WattBike is a smart bike, and more versatile - but it is not as good for a spin class. So if your preference is spin, I’d go with the Peleton. You can certainly see your power and cadence on the Peleton App with their bike.

Hi Kristal - I’ve not tried it. But if people confirm it will work with the WattBike, then you can have a good spin class on the Atom. It’s just that you will change gears electronically vs using the torque nob on the Peleton Bike 👍

Having the Pelaton v Wattbike Atom discussion with my wife and I. I have used Wattbike Trainer a great deal. I also have a brother in the UK and we have connected rides on zwift which in covid times has been great. My question is can the Pelaton app pick up metrics from the Atom? Is the lack of handlebar adjustment on the Pelaton a problem? Can I use Zwift on the Pelaton so I can join my brother on rides?
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
Apologies for the delay in my reply, Nick. I only just saw your comment. Answer is no. The WattBike Hub data is proprietary and the Peleton bike won’t be able to pick it up. The Wattbike has a power meter that measures the power and pedalling stroke for the left and right individually. I think the Peleton is a great product - but its not a smart bike - and is much more of a spin class bike, with an amazing program of live spin classes (and pre recorded). It would not be ideal for Zwift - because it doesn’t have gears - and relies on a torque knob to change resistance.

Which do you think would be better for an absolute newbie - broken runner wanting to maintain fitness? Thanks
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 4 жыл бұрын
HKR Golf my personal preference is the Atom and Zwift. Because it’s got much greater crossover to riding outdoors, and the community on Zwift is cool. Also the Atom is compatible with nearly all other training apps - and has its own free Hubb App (which can help newbies like us build good / efficient pedalling technique - which is key). So I feel the Atom’s got more longevity. However if you love spin classes and are prepared to pay the £49 per month subscription - Peleton is sensational. Both will build your fitness 🤞. The thing about running is that I’ve found it harder on my joints and recover as I got older. And that in turn impedes progression. Whereas with a solid program on the cycling - you can have nice low intensity recover rides to build base fitness and burn a little body fat. And then have 2-3 hard interval sessions per week to really build your power and fitness. I’ve loved the switch to cycling - life changing 👌

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy Perfectly stated. I am going to get the Stages SB once it's available - I will mod the V2 Peloton bike I have into something to use for Zwift in addition to classes and then sell it. My support experience with Peloton has been abysmal - they had to compensate me quite a bit - 2 years extra warranty - and 7 months of membership free during my ownership. I went through 5 bikes. I am on bike #6. Just replace the drivetrain after 5K miles - replaced seat, and they gave me a new touchpad current to the V2 Bike. They made V2 cheaper so they could roll out fast and gain market share. It's really sad - because they don't pay attention to the details that truly matter in fitness. Not a fan of John Dorsey - they need better leaders and need to dig deep in my opinion - my experiences will find their way into the DNA of everyone else - I can't be the only one who went through it. I give them credit for coming back with compensation but I want stuff that works and I want it to work a long time. I want that immersion you discussed above. I can go all day on this. I am finding the gear switching on Wattbike atom with Zwift to be confusing and unresponsive. Do you have any advice on that?
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 4 жыл бұрын
Joanna JP hi Joanna. I find that the gears switch up and down quite efficiently. Sometimes the gear number on Zwift flickers between the gear I’m in and gear 4. But that’s just a Zwift glitch. Could you explain more what you are experiencing ?

Do you find the same issues with erg mode that have been noted by DCrainmaker in his review of the wattbike ?

Cheers Niall - it’s great for longer intervals 5mins or more. But there is a small 5-7sec lag for the resistance to change, so I don’t use it for shorter intervals. I think the gen 2 is better than my gen 1 in this regard

Hi, not familiar with doing challenges from home - when joining a ride the Atom will change the gear based on the map you are doing?
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Slade - thanks so much 🙏. Yes the Atom is a smart bike, so when it links up to an App like Zwift, then if the gradient of the terrain changes, the resistance automatically changes to simulate the terrain (ie get harder if a hill / climb). Or if using a training App like Sufferfest (or the Zwift training) the bike has ERG mode, to automatically make the resistance harder when the required power for the interval increases 👍

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy legend thank you so much. Gotcha. Re Nucleus do you reckon I will still be able to do spinning or just ride as a normal spin bike but with the addition of work power and endurance?
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
Absolute pleasure👍 I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the Nucleus. If all you need is a normal spin bike with a manual torque controller - then you’ll be able to get a cheaper bike than the Atom. But the Atom will give you a great workout and spin, plus open up the world of Zwift and other training Aps which require a smart bike 👍

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy Solid, sturdy (fans are a bit fragile), and the road feel simulation is great. I understand not everyone may want this in a stationary bike though. I have friends with Peloton and its an expensive ordinary stationary bike with a $200 led tv screen connected to a single, proprietary set of workouts. For me, just not as enjoyable, butI never got into spin classes. Anyway, just my opinion. I’m looking forward to see what Gen 2 of the top smart bikes look like. Thanks for the thoughtful vid.

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy yea totally agree, though a tacx neo probably better for me since I don't have the spare room. This lockdown has me seriously considering cancelling my gym membership in favour of a smart trainer, once they're back in stock! Have been using a fluid 2 since 2014. Nice job BTW on your progression, very thorough. Was wondering if you had background in other sports since you quickly ramped to 280w from 220?

ironman tooltime - yes the Wahoo or Tacx are well regarded 👌. And I do think the Zwift membership is extremely versatile/ social / fun / demanding etc. Early on this year I dropped a video shot in Miami, where I chatted my bodybuilding history. Not exactly preparation for high intensity cardio - but I think the focus on strength training and nutrition plus recovery helped me here. And in the vid How I My FTP, you can see I focussed in the early days a lot on shorter max intense efforts (3mins and max 20mins) - which was informed by my gym bunny mentality. And I believe that the intensity early days was a big help👌

Great videos I really enjoy them. How do you find the wattbike with zwift? I'm considering swapping from my kickr turbo trainer to this. I have heard some reviews that there is a lag when putting the power down quickly. Do you experience this? Is it easy to adjust? Me and my partner are thinking of sharing it.

Thanks ever so much Brian 🙏 And happy new year ! I have the Atom 1 - and there is a small lag at times between the gear changing and the resistance changing - but much of the time this isn’t noticeable. I do however find that when the virtual terrain is rolling and the gradient is changing a lot then the lag can become a bit more of an issue (resistance still rising as you go over the brow causing you to change down too many gears). But I have loved it - and understand that the Gen 2 Atom has resolved this - and am likely to upgrade to it 👍
