The other thing that can help is one of those manual impact drivers. Not the electric or pneumatic kind, the kind you hit with a hand hammer. They can really be a lifesaver on tight screws.

Try using a JIS screwdriver on those screws and you're a lot less likely to strip the heads. The Japanese bikes use JIS (Japan Industrial Standard) heads, which are like Phillips, but slightly different. Using a Phillips on a JIS head screw can strip it pretty easily.

I own 2 vstar 1100s the starter clutch isn’t that hard to change if you take your time and buy a service manual. You will probably have to buy a couple of tools. The first one I did took me 8hrs the second one took 5hrs and the parts cost less than $300 including all the seals gaskets and the oil to refill the bike. While you have the side cover off it’s also a perfect time to preventatively replace the shift shaft seal.

Only a few minor problems until at around 150K miles an internal drive chain snapped and locked the engine. You see a beat-up old wing, I see a blank canvas with lots of potentials. I'd love to have one like that to go with my Yamaha Royal Star tour deluxe. It would give the Yamaha a break from doing all the miles I do going on trips with it during the summer. I would put about 3 to 4 grand tops in her starting with a paint job, new stereo and speakers, maybe some LED lighting, and I could DIY fix the cruise control and other small issues. And since I have a good running, excellent condition touring cruiser already, I could take my time and gradually fix it up to what I'd want. Then enjoy the heck out of it riding all up and down the eastern seaboard and Appalachian mountain range.

Restoring old bikes is awesome unless it's a Harley then it just gets expensive..... Restoring Japanese is great... I just picked up an intruder 750 1990 for $600 already got it running and riding it all mint... Just needs a clutch I already ordered it can't wait🎉... So far I've changed all the fluids. Took off tank cleaned it with acid then neutralized it and then finally sealed it. Inline fuel filter on a fuel hose... We had to clean the carburetors a little bit but that's it..... Buy a battery and clutch kit.... I'm into the bike about $950 total... It only has thirteen thousand miles on and brand used tires

Thank You for speaking the truth about custom paint. YOU may love it but next owner probably won't and doesn't want to pay for it. It's the one mod that usually kills any value and makes bike hard or impossible to sell. Sorry painters!

i have seen a few i liked on GW's but not often. my favorite is the sport bikes that are missing the fairing and being passed off as a naked bike. im like no, you bought something you couldnt afford to take care of and wrecked it.

Stripped screws probably used a Phillips head, rather than a jis head. Looks the same, Phillips were designed for Cadillac because workers were over tightening screws and destroying expensive parts. Phillips are designed to back out when too much torque is used. Easy to replace a .01 cent screw rather than a $50-500 part. Jis looks so much the same, but I was gifted one in the ‘80’s for use on my Honda Twinstar, and never stripped a screw on it. Lost the screwdriver, now I ride a Harley! Great bike, rode a Voyager when new. Great work you guys do to further people’s love of motorcycles. Keep up the good work!

If you fix the speedo the cruise control would probably work it functions off from what the speedo is reading

I wonder if the speedometer needs to be operational for the cruise to work? These Kawasaki Voyagers were competitors with the GoldWing for a while, but Honda kept with it and owns the category for the most part now. I forgot about the Suzuki Cavalcade and the Yamaha Venture Royale....the 80's were interesting times in motorcycle history.
