The Kettle Valley Rail Trail (KVR) is one of the most epic cycling adventures in British Columbia. It offers a glimpse into the provinces history following the path of the original Kettle Valley Railway which opened in 1915. Now the decommissioned tracks are home to a 650km network of trails and connected pathways from Hope to Castlegar.
For this particular adventure we decided to cycle from Kelowna (Myra Canyon) to Penticton British Columbia. This is one of the most SCENIC portions of the KVR and is a bucket list ride for all biking enthusiasts. During our 80km mission we enjoyed exploring Myra Canyons 18 trestles and two tunnels, cruised over the Bellevue Trestle, relished in the serenity of the forest valleys and the beauty of the old growth ponderosa pine. We swallowed a cold pint at chute lake lodge, explored the Big Adra Tunnel and rode through Naramata’s famous wineries above the beautifully blue Okanagan lake.
THIS ONE NEEDS TO BE ON YOUR BIKING BUCKET LIST!

If anyone is riding this on a gravel bike, you are going to want more than 40c tires. I did it on 35c tires and I got rattled like crazy. The section from the last trestle to little tunnel is pretty rough. Huge pot holes, washboard, bed rock poking through the road surface. Carbon XC mtb is probably the ideal bike.

That's an amazing tip! It would definitely be deadly shaky on the wrong bike.

I rode the KVR from Penticton all the way to downtown Kelowna on my rigid cyclocross. The pot holes at Chute Lake rattled my brain. (Met you on big red express). Loving the videos.

Sad to see the Skiing videos over, but it is nice to see the ride on the KVR! Good memories. Looks like you had a blast! Keep up the good videos! Try going the other way on the KVR towards Midway and Christina Lake.

This is all part of the Trans Canada Trail as well. As a local to the area, I've used the KVR as an alternate route to Kelowna a few times, as well as using it to access areas for hunting in the spring/fall. The Adra tunnel has been closed to through traffic for over 2 decades, if not longer. If you want to carry on the ride, the KVR will also take you on the other side of the valley up to Summerland, through and behind and over to Princeton.

Wow! Thanks for sharing the additional info Mike. Did you drive the TCT to kelowna or cycle? I'll have to do some exploring and ride it further. What is your favourite section?
@mikeford963

@@riseandalpine I live in the area, so to be perfectly honest, I don't spend a lot of time on that trail. Most of my time is spent seeing it while out hunting!! I suppose you could say I take the fact that it's so readily accessible for granted. But I do drive the section from Chute Lake down into Kelowna via the Gillard FSR and I have to say, the view from the section through Okanagan Mountain Park is pretty amazing!!

😂 😂 😂 😂 We did this ride on about May 20th I believe. It took us about 9 hours but we stopped lots and spent about an hour having lunch in the middle. We parked the truck in Penticton and hired a shuttle van to drive us to Myra Canyon! It's so worth it!

Thanks for sharing. I'm from Australia but will be visiting Kelowna in late May 2023. Is it possible to cycle from Kelowna to KVRT in Myra Canyon or would I need to drive to Myra Canyon and cycle from there? Thanks for your help on this.
@riseandalpine

You can totally cycle from Kelowna but you would be tacking on a significant amount of distance and elevation! Most people drive to Myra, but if you like a challenge then I would say go for it!

Hey Tom! We parked the car in Penticton and took a shuttle with Hoodo Adventures to the start of Myra Canyon. Since Gas was so expensive it didn't make sense to bring two cars. If you check out the link in the description I've written a guide on the ride which includes maps!! Let me know if you have any other questions.

It looks like the ride to Penticton was downhill or flat most of the way. What would the return trip be like? 70 km uphill does not sound like a walk in the park.

@@tombiggi1024 it's relentlessly uphill, albeit not very steep. The issue is that much of the track between Chute Lake and Naramata is pretty sandy, which would be a drag to slog through uphill.

quads and dirt bikes use the trail regularly, but they are not permitted in the Myra Canyon (trestles and tunnels) section and there are a couple of blockages near Hydraulic Lake.
