But the rings was awake after Bilbo used it in the movie and that's why it also started showing effects to Bilbo and after he gave it to frodo he still had the effects and the time frodo met him he again started asking for the ring as soon as he saw it so I think durability definitely and surely goes to frodo and besides that both are very good characters with deep story love them both

@@user-jx9mn7lk6j I believe (alongside the books) that in all radio versions of the hobbit, including 1977, the most we see Smaug and Bilbo together is 1. Bilbo stealing the goblet and returning the next night 2. The conversation between the two

Sam was the real hero of LOTR. I don't think Frodo ever would've made it without him. Props to Sam, totally underrated. Deserves more potatoes.

He was the real hero. If you look at what Tolkien said about the heroes as he based several characters after his friends and one after his wife. Remember he was a solider and saw horrors of war. Sam, wasn't just one person, but the aspect of the real hero of the unrecognized common solider who fought for his friends. Sam was the polar opposite of the ring. He was to counter it when ring pulled Frodo in towards evil.

I actually agree that Biblo is probably tougher than Frodo. He held the ring for longer and wasn't corrupted by it like Frodo was towards the end of his quest.

Realistically Bilbo had more in terms of weapons/armor, because he didn't know what the ring was, so he just used it like a ring of invisibility, which Frodo never could.

I think you can't compare two different characters, Bilbo and Frodo had different background stories : Bilbo had the possibility to choose, Frodo hadn't; Frodo, indeed, carried the ring as his uncle's legacy, and Sauron was becoming more powerful.

Yeah I get a tiny bit annoyed seeing this video as I believe that these are some characters that should never be compared in the pursuit of finding which is better. Like you said both are in very different situations, Bilbo has a choice and the comfort of others on a more (for lack of a better word) light-hearted journey and is able to enjoy certain bits of it. Whereas Frodo has no choice in the matter, either he goes sacrificing himself for Midde-Earth or lives to suffer a fate worse than death along with all of his friends and family. This removes any sense of light hearted ness from his journey as it is literally a final last ditch effort to save Middle-earth in which he is almost never not suffering due to a vast multitude of factors both internal( his own feelings and rings corruption)and external(conditions stuff brought about by ring etc).

Especially if you compare the movie versions. Jackson tried to stay true to original frodo in the books with slight differences but with bilbo he decided to write fanfiction

The thing about Bilbo is that Bilbo is actually a main character. He really feels like a main character unlike Frodo, who, while incredibly written, like everything in the Lord of the Rings universe, is just one of the many main characters. Bilbo is my man.

While Bilbo is stronger physically, I'd say Frodo is stronger mentally. Yes, Bilbo had the Ring for 60 years, but Frodo had it while it was "awake" and stronger. This was even more intense as they got closer and closer to Mordor

@@Oblaczech Frodo easily got controlled while Bilbo who clearly after 60 years was starting to get into it’s grasp still fought back against the need for it especially as shown when he tries to grab it. Frodo is also easily manipulated by Gollum especially. The ring was also always wanting to go to it’s master. It was always awake as shown with the dark sorcerer who was Sauron. It was awake as well and Bilbo saw the eye, he saw the future through Smaug and still fought back against the visions. When they were looping in the forest, he quickly broke out of the loop. Frodo has a weak mind. He easily wanted to kill Gollum whilst Bilbo didn’t even with the chance. Frodo even asked why he would. Frodo is clearly weaker in the mind.

@@FaithWay7 Bilbo didn’t carry it to Mordor. The ring gets more powerful the closer to Mordor it is, you can see the toll it takes on Frodo is immense compared to Bilbo. For Bilbo it was just a mild obsession, for Frodo it was a constant nagging temptation that withered his soul. Frodo was braving that with an additional wound from a Morgul blade, a wound that never fully heals and only adds to his immense suffering. They were constantly be hunted down by Nazgül whereas Bilbo got to just chill at the Shire for 60 years. And remember, Gandalf says “The Ring has awoken . . . it’s heard it’s master’s call.” The Ring at the time of Frodo’s ownership is stronger than it ever was with Sméagol or Bilbo, because Sauron is finally at a point where he’s again ready to conquer Middle Earth And yes, Frodo absolutely needed Sam to succeed but that doesn’t take away how much willpower Frodo had to actually carry the ring. Sam carried the ring for only a couple hours and already he had started to fall for the seduction of the ring, it had to be Frodo.

I love Bilbo but I feel like people don't give enough credit to Frodo, saying he is weak etc.. I know Bilbo had the ring longer than Frodo, but at that time the ring lay relatively still. But Frodo and the Fellowship set out to destroy it and the closer Frodo gets to achieving that the heavier and stronger the ring gets. That affects Frodos strength and wisdom extremly. Yes, he wouldn't have made it without Sam and Smeagol but neither would have Bilbo who has more battle iq and experience. Frodo resisted the ring for months whilst it already grew stronger and stronger (+the time between the party and the begin of the journey, which, in the book at least, is 17 years). Therefore if it comes to willpower and mental strength and endurance I think Frodo is better than Bilbo.

Bilbo outsmarted a dragon, held two of the most powerful items of middle earth during the time, actually used the ring effectively during the big spider battles, outsmarted his way out of death multiple times, and most of all, even though his journey wasn't forced on him, he chose to dive into danger because he wanted excitement. He's also the only one who's able to resist the rings temptation the longest, at least he did all the way up to the first movie when he was now an old man. Even then, he was able to drop it to the floor willfully before he went off on his other journey. Frodo is still awesome. Its just that his character is seen as more vulnerable and timid. His journey was forced on him the second Gandalf figured out what the ring really was. Towards the end, if it wasn't for Sam's compassion and gollums inconveniences, frodo would have just taken the ring for himself. Still, awesome character, but had bilbo realized what he had in his hands at the beginning, im sure he would have destroyed it.

Frodo has some insane endurance for a hobbit. Way more than Bilbo. Literally spiritually as tough as a Maiar. He resisted the shard of a Morgul blade for many days. Impressive stuff. I'd say it's an even match.

And the fact that he fought many creatures like the spiders in mirkwood. Also fighting in the battle of the five armies. It was a hard decision

@@lotrenjoyer4672 Bilbo didn't actually fight during the battle of five armies if I recall correctly. He does however have higher battle IQ than Frodo. Much higher. Bilbo started killing spiders like he had done it his whole life, while Frodo, on multiple occasions, just kind of drops his sword and basically dies :/. Also, the One was dormant for most of the time Bilbo owned it and it still had a heavy effect on him. Gollum owned it far longer. The ring keeps their vitality in check. So conceivably if Gollum would have survived Mt Doom erupting he wouldn't have lived long anyways.

Frodos strength is escaping, meanwhile bilbo has stealth, strength, experience, AND a good escape artist under his belt. Honestly I think Bilbo held out for so long against the ring is because he witnessed firsthand what the curse of gold can do to someone.

Bilbo fought spiders, wolves and Smaug the Magnificent wjile wielding the One Ring for 60 years and giving it away as well as Sting, while Frodo didn't fight battles without help. Bilbo's crew (him, 13 dwarves and gandalf)

Yeah fr, Frodo was so weak, Sam was the one who kept him alive. Frodo would be dead in the first movie if Sam wasn’t there XD

Frodo also was 50 in Fellowship of the Ring. Though he didn't look that way because he already had the ring. That wasn't really emphazised in the films and I know this comparison is based on the films. Therefore my reply is to be seen as background information to your comment only. 😊

@@VercettiCrimeFamily He was 33 in the very beginning. But in the books about 17 years passed between the birthdayparty and the start of their journey, therefore Frodo was about 50 years old then😄

I like Frodo but he never even won a proper fight and if he went alone he would die in 3 days Bilbo earned respect of the dwarves and had more character development in my opinion

If we’re talking a fight bilbo for sure in botfa he was holding his own with galfalf against an orc horde in a fight enclosure not to mention he killed one of the wolf things in an unexpected journey. That’s a crazy feat for a hobbit
