He has amassed an impressive collection of steam engines with the help of friends, the Auckland Steam Engine Society, scrappers, and his own true grit. He is through and through a man of steam in a country dripping with steam engines and amazing people of steam.
Many thanks to Daniel Hicks and the other steam enthusiasts of New Zealand for rolling out the red carpet and 'jacking up' a number of steam opportunities for my father and me on our much too short visit. Many more steam New Zealand videos to come!
I apologize for the quality of the footage and the lack of continuity of the conversation. My cameras are in need of upgrading and many of the clips were cut short so I could enjoy being present with the good company of Daniel, my father, and all the engines. I also apologize for my amateurish editing, especially this go-round. No good excuses there. A better edited version with more details about the engines will be uploaded soon.
