On 15 August, 11 men walked out of Godhra jail in Gujarat. 20 years ago, during the 2002 post Godhra riots, these men had gangraped Bilkis Bano. Earlier this week, when they were released from jail, visuals emerged of relatives greeting them with sweets and charan-sparsh, touching their feet for blessings.
A debate has since ensued, on how 11 rapists walked out of jail and on the propriety of the state government’s decision to release them. In this video, Apoorva Mandhani tells you what the case is, what happened in 20 years from 2002 to 2022, and what are the legal options available to Bano now.
