I think that was a reference to the Valerie Solanos/Solanis thing that happened a year earlier, and they just made a continuity error. Back then the doctors said Warhol has a fifty fifty chance to survive. So either that was a botched attempt, or... and hear me out, the xenophobic agent X arranged the "asassination attempt", agent W was in the hospital, they almost managed to kill off Andy Warhol, but X reconsidered the thing and sent agent W back without any vacation. Maxbe agent X saw the concentration of aliens around the Warhol protocol, and pulled the "only you can do this job, agent W, so you have to stay there and we make the "factory" even more popular for better surveillance, because of the second class freaks and geeks immigrating to Earth. The 60's factory days were however over, and to the seventies it was less popular (maybe agent W made it so). Consider this. Warhol was socializing, yes but more on the entrepreneurial side, and he was showing off with his injury. What appears as being a show off, in agent W's mind may be a cry for help signaling his misfortune "I could have died, I could have been out of this misery, this is what you've done to me". The eighties had a slight boom in his career, but only because the younger artists around him (new agents maybe, under agent Z's administration, perhaps). Less surveillance was required so W could just lead a more peaceful life (relative). In this case, I believe his gallbladder problems were not faked (seeing the stress of the job), but maybe the post op arrhythmia caused death was faked (the exact opposite to the attempt happened this time, because news were all about his steady recovery. And this is my MiB fictional conspiracy theory about that.

That was Agent V suppose to fake W's death but she screwed up. Something you gotta like about Agent W is that at no point does he question that Js an agent or not cause he's black like some of the other guys at the agency. He just rolls with it and is only rude to him cause he got dragged behind a curtain during a job he hates.
