Bill wasn't very happy about the trick they played on Oliver Reed, and almost didn't agree to go on the show. You can see he's uncomfortable in this video. The Word was a Youth TV show aimed at 16-18 year olds.
This video is owned by Channel 4 Television, please visit the unofficial The Word site

The following night he played Birmingham Town Hall in England. I was there. He was asked about this show. He wasn't impressed by it. He had cancer at the time but didn't yet know it. After he flew back to the States, a month or so later, he went to see a doctor, and that's when he was given the sad news.

I don't know what you people are on about. That's exactly how I want Bill Hicks to be interviewed. That pressure revealed a part of his personality wide open and does much to demystify him in terms identifiable to the public. That in turn does much service to his legacy through the honoring of what is essentially his message; by proving himself fallible and vulnerable to the same pressures that govern and affect us all. He also knew his limits and did not let his ego overstep the situation; a good doze of both patience and self realization is at play here.

@@FUNKINETIK I think it was his managers who coaxed Bill into staying as he was still establishing himself in Britain and Ireland at the time. I remember reading about it in an early biography - can’t remember what it was called. I do remember Bill turning his head away when Reed started “performing” - and the show did take advantage of an alcoholic for a cheap laugh. bill hicks is the man and it's probably because he was somewhat before my time but i find it hard to believe that he is accepted as one of the greatest. maybe i just can't appreciate his originality cos so many comedians i grew up with evolved from his humour, that seems the case with alot of things, eg. music, movies, etc. i'm making this up as i go but i just had an epiphany. we need to treat art as we treat a person. don't judge, just try your hardest to understand and appreciate it for what it is, while at the same time question the underlying motives. don't put any one on a pedestal over another. this is what you do with products and because people are far more than products, when they are treated as such they are actually devalued and less appreciated, as is their art. this is a good example, the hype killed bill hicks and i'll never forgive it. fuck the hype!
