I think Hicks realized the opening he served to Dennis Miller about Leary right after he said "five years ago", but Miller got the next line out first. Hicks was already on board with the thought.

John, you saw Bill perform live?? Wow! Do you know if you were at any of the shows that may have ended up on one of his records? This was fantastic by the way. Dennis Miller loved Norm MacDonald, whom became a favourite comic of mine in recent years. So sad to hear of Norm’s passing. And to know Dennis was such a big fan of Bill’s feels very special.

I know. I suppose that back then, you couldn't anticipate the Internet cataloguing all of your appearances on TV and comedy clubs, so you could get away with recylcling a joke here and there. But compare him to George Carlin, who got better with age and always went back to the drawing board to come back fresh and original, you can see the apples don't fall too far from the tree. Hicks and Kinison died early, but their influence would always have looked pail in comparison to their predecessor. I still find Hicks funny, and respect his integrity to say what's on his mind. There aren't many comedians willing to take chances like that today.

Well, back then they didn't have 300 channels, the Internet or cell phones. Most comics recycled alot of things back then because they worked a lot. You could do the same act in every town back then because, for them, it was fresh.
