These billhooks are very effective tools. I can see why they would take it over an axe or hatchet. A billhook can chop quite some thick limbs. And the thinner limbs are a breeze to go through. Where an axe or hatchet is unwieldy due to its heavy head, chopping thin limbs..

I used to have a gardening job, I found an old bill hook in the shed of the estate I worked and cleaned it up and put it back to work. I always remember that thing for some reason

They actually go way way back almost to prehistory they have a very long lineages one of the first things any primitive farmer had to do was clear ground!! These things are superb at it a very underated underused tool these days

It is a hook for hooking away what you cut and dead branches. That is all it is , a hook for hooking away stuff

Road warrior In Finland we call that thing a "vesuri" and its main purpose is de-limbing. Cutting branches off a log.

And you can chop those thicker branches also with it . It bites deep, and is very fast, when comparing it to a hatchet for example. Very effective tool. Underrated I think by many. Because of 'unknown makes unloved'.
