Always the worst arguments from people with his attitude.. The whole "everyone was doing it" argument doesn't work.. BAD PEOPLE were doing it, there were good people who abhorred slavery back then... They were the good guys, the slavers were the bad guys.. The equivalent in the 80s was that the bad guys pinched waiters' asses while the good guys wanted none of that behavior.. But we still pretend it was just how it was in the 80s.. BAD PEOPLE DID THAT IN THE 80S..... Not everyone.. So the argument that "everyone was doing it" is just so damn flawed. Some of the worst people owned slaves. None of the best did. We always judge the actions of our grandfathers by what the worst of his era did... Imagine if we did the same today.. "Everyone was transphobic back then" can be used by the son of a transphobe in 2050... And people would believe it... Compelling but severely flawed justification is what conservatives live on.

Bill showed his true side during this interview. He absolutely lost me. He had the opportunity to really throw some hard facts at Musk and he completely puckered up. Also "Woke" derived from African-American Vernacular English meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination." That's a virus we all need to have.

It evolved from your definition through intersectional ideology propagated initially through closed minded university groupthink tanks that caused antisocial authoritarian dogmas based on Stalinism's more base Marxist ideals to take root in millennial college kids. This spurred a societal reaction in older, more developed populations which abbreviated the far left's sprawling religious ideologies to "woke" as its underpinnings align with undergraduate level intersectional theory, itself rooted in the failed experiments of Lennin and Marx that were later taken to their logical conclusion by Stalin and Mao.

I'm 63-year-old white dude. I used to watch Maher's show regularly. Heck, my ex took the kids to see him live on a couple of occasions. None of us pay any attention to him anymore not because we're woke, but because he's not funny. He stopped seeing politics as farce that it is as started to take a personal financial interest in it.

There's a great moment on Maher's show years ago, when he had the late Christopher Hitchens on as a guest. And Hitchens says something to the effect of "oh, these morons (Maher's audience) will applaud anything". They proceed to boo as Maher starts tripping over his tongue in protest. Hitchens just responds by flipping off the audience.

It has nothing to do with "cancel culture" and everything to do with making the people you work for look bad. I don't even necessarily agree that it should happen, but blaming it on "cancel culture" is dumb and ignores all of history. When I was a kid, I learned that Abraham Lincoln was a racist, and he accomplished all he did despite those feelings. It gave me a nuanced view of Lincoln and made his efforts all the more impressive. BTW, it was not recently that I learned this fact. I am 67 years old. (I think a week older than Maher.) I guess Maher doesn't trust students to know the whole story about our historical figures/heroes. He probably learned all that when he was young, but apparently forgot.

If I was a parent who had given permission for my child to attend that performance, I'd be mad at the administration for cancelling the trip. First, because they were vague about their reasons for cancelling it and second, because if some of the parents objected to someone playing multiple parts in a play, I'd be questioning why they couldn't just not withhold permission for their own kid to go and let the other students attend - as completely ignorant as their objections were.

@@nerag7459 no, it is called staying in a bubble, a wealthy bubble for those two. And Maher is surrounded by yes men, as is Musk so they have an inflated ego and think they are much smarter than they really are.
