I am 100% sure that sams never sat with a Muslim scholar and asked why is this In Quran or Life of Muhammad SAW. Very good analysis Dave. I agree with Sam that this is an issue that has really shown some serious cracks in secular liberalism. Liberals, on the whole, have placed so much focus on caring for "the other" that when a genuine threat to liberalism itself comes along, they collectively shit themselves and just lie down and play dead. Liberalism desperately needs to learn from this and get an actual intellectual spine, rather than an emotional one.

+The Rubin Report I think that at least some of this stems from the fact that so many Islamic atrocities don't get the media attention they deserve. For instance, I saw (on You Tube) a homosexual man get thrown from the top of a building. He lived. They finished him off with rocks and a cinder block. Didn't exactly make the ten o'clock news. Perhaps it should have. Sure saw a lot of talking heads flap gum about Kim Davis, though. The people that murdered this man just seemed like the basic Muslims you might meet on the streets; they all joined in! (not in the U.S. of course)...Just saying...Having said that, I still quote Hitchens when I say that religion poisons everything. Thanks, you have earned a new sub.
@stefanconradsson
@stefanconradsson 8 жыл бұрын
+Rob Degrey I agree with parts of the analysis, but it is not very good, sorry. The essence of the idea Sam Harris and Bill Maher proposes is that the ideology of Islam is separate from the person/persons holding it. Racism is saying that you have separate rights (elevated or depreciated) because of your skin colour or ethnicity (lets say, for simplicity). Islam on the other hand, knows no skin or ethnicity, because it is an idea inside your head. And it is a bad idea. A really bad one to have inside ones head. Attacking the idea inside your head does not make you a racist. Hope this clear things up. Have a wonderful life. Cheers.

It think Afleck just thought he was going to come off as the great white supraliberal defender of the brown man and instead looked like a idiot shadow boxing against strawman arguments that no one actually made. Sometimes that works when someone comes off as very passionate and inspiring.... but Afleck is just not that good if an actor. Harris is absolutely right, as liberals we're really hypocrites when we pretend everything is ok with Islam and tolerate terrible idea with what are really incredibly dismissive caviats like "Oh they are an oppressed people, they live in poverty, they do not have proper education... you cannot hold all of this against them".

Yeah, but what is the point of singling out Islam? Why is Islam even being discussed? Why not discuss Israeli Zionism in Occupied Palestine, waging colonialism and genocide against Palestinians? Why not discuss U.S. funding of Israel? Why not discuss U.S. apologism for Saudi Arabia? The whole premise and framing is Islamaphobic. If you cannot see that, please read (or re-read) the classic book, which Dr. Noam Chomsky co-wrote, Manufacturing Consent, about how the range and bounds of discourse are framed and constrained by institutional abuse of power even before discourse or debate begins, often without the awareness of the participants or observers.

"I am not condemning all of Islam, the condemnation does not apply to “all members of a group or the group itself based on the bad acts of specific individuals in that group.” I am condemning all of Islam because of it's doctrines ... ?" Uh .... That's a rather specious distinction. "I am not condemning Halloween, the condemnation does not apply to people who practice the tradition. I am condemning Halloween itself and the beliefs upon which it is based." Change the noun. Does it make sense? The US and the UK, 'Judeo Christian nations', are engaging in war crimes and atrocities on a daily basis. "Oh, but see- those are politically motivated actions." So, apparently, it follows that war crimes and atrocities committed by 'Muslim nations' are solely religiously motivated? Muslim motivations and actions are inherently worse? Moral equivalency much? There is an inherent presumption on the part Mr. Harris that his views are superior, and all other views are the result of ignorance or stupidity. Confirmation bias is evident in his rhetoric, his cherry picking of facts, and his application of a double standard as it applies to the concepts of good and bad.

If they misrepresent an utterly important and valid argument THIS much, it makes me wonder what else they've been intentionally misrepresenting over the years. I'm very liberal/progressive and an atheist AND I cannot stand racism/bigotry...and couldn't agree more with Sam Harris. Islam is an IDEA, an OPINION. It's empirically untrue and based on a "moral" code that is patently _immoral_. Why on earth should I "respect" an *_untrue immoral OPINION?_* Religion always gets a free pass; but not anymore. I keep watching him take things like this debate and twist it to fit his own ideology. Any time your arguing from a place of passion over facts, you're always going to be on the losing end (Even if you have a point.) That's the problem with the media as a whole. They always come at you from a place of bias or narrative as opposed to objectivity. Compounded, of course, with the probability that he was roiding for Batman.

So glad to see Dave talk about this in a sane manner. Cenk (et all) went about it in a sensationalist manner, and did exactly what Harris accused many liberals of doing (falling into a tolerance paradox, & refusing to criticize Islam (outside of "all religions are bad!" - a total straw-man)). I won't hold my breath for Cenk to bring up the Pew Poll numbers that support Bill & Sam's viewpoint. Bill/Sam/Dave are extremely right -- all the books are crazy in their texts, all the extremists are crazy in their beliefs, but Christianity/Judaism/(et all)'s more extreme beliefs (say, all the stoning-jazz in the OT) are not put into practice on the large scale as they are with Islam (and it it NOT just because of the political systems of those countries, it's because of the religion). I wonder if Dave's talked about this off-camera with any of his fellow TYT employees (as, at least on camera, they seem unwilling to even consider these points).
@tgwnn
@tgwnn 9 жыл бұрын
The funny part is that Cenk actually did bring up the Pew poll numbers and acknowledged that extremism is a problem and that he is concerned about it (in the very first video he did on the RT segment). He just thought that the "20%" Harris brought up was a made-up number, which it partly is, definitely, but as Harris said, it is probably a conservative estimate based on several polls.

LanceUppercut4 Mostly I agree, but I have to call out the notion that the relevant distiguishment is between the muslim world (whatever that means) and the west. It's between the enlightenment ideas and theocratic nonsense that came before it. Non-muslim cases in point: ugandas (an overwelmingly christian country) anti-homosexuality laws or female genital mutilation in ethiopia (64% christians). Muslim counterexamples: Bosnia, Turkey and Indonesia. Which illustrates Reza Aslans reather more though-through criticism of Bill Maher (and by extension also Sam Harris): Talking about the "muslim world" makes about as much (or little) sense as talking about the "christian world". One has got to be specific when considering the problems with islam or chrisitanity, not just to the nature of the problem, but also to the particular group of people or countries.
@LanceUppercut
@LanceUppercut 9 жыл бұрын
f43d348k That's very true. I think what the argument would be (perhaps what Bill/Sam implied but didn't say directly) - not Quan vs Bible (the original words/rules), but _in time_ what societies did with them. Obviously it takes time to distance yourself (as a society) from the extreme aspects, and Islam is the "younger" religion**, but I would imagine they (Bill/Sam/similar minded people) would argue, "how *long* is it going to take?" (/it should have happened by now - perhaps that the environment in these countries won't allow the scientific enlightenment that brought Europe/America out of period of more "extreme practice") **AFAIK, the violent anti-homosexuality in Uganda is a rather recent "event", the result of an American preacher (who's currently alive) who traveled there & incited these fears where they previously didn't exist. That is, it's very much in it's infancy (& obviously devoid of progressive scientific thinking), so I'm not surprised & arguably wouldn't group that example with "the christian west". In regards to the 2nd paragraph - I would say that using the phrase "muslim world" is just lazy/sloppy (rather than. Not meant in critical way, just that many/most people don't go into detail about what they exactly meant (ie: "asterisk - by 'muslim world' I obviously mean the countries mentioned in this poll, and that the majority of them believe what I am arguing), every single time you are referencing said-group. I imagine they assumed that would be known (that they didn't mean "all muslims everywhere") in the setting of an intelligent debate (which was debatable in this case, lol), so I don't begrudge them the use of it.

LanceUppercut4 No maybe a sect of Islam, or or a subsect of its beliefs is young, but the religious text is about as old as the old testament followed by jewish people. One of the worst things christians have ever done, is called the crusades. Well that has two sides, the holy war they were waging was against what is essentially muslims. They are only young in the sense that creationist and evangelist christians are young.

LanceUppercut4 The idea that some muslim societies are theocratic because they are in a sort of medieval period is a fictoid (ie. a factoid that's false). As late as In the middle 20th century many muslim countries that are now sadly infected by islamism was extremely open and progressive, Egypt being the prime example: 70 years ago it would have been hard to find a woman with a headscarf, now it's difficult to find one without (not that headscarves is necesarily a sign of islamism, but other more relevant markers has followed the same pattern). In other words, they are not in a islamic version of the medieval ages, rather they are in an islamic version of uganda, which, as you say, has recently regressed rather badly, but quite recently. I definitly agree that "the muslim world" is a lazy term, rather than an explicit biggoted one. However, I can sympatize with e.g. turks when Bill Maher (or whoever) uses the term to describe the prevalence of capital punishment for apostacy - it really would seem to them to be the exact equivalent of muslims using ugandas anti-gay laws as examples of "the christian world", and as such, the term should be avoided: It makes enemies of people who should be our friends. Jacob Nesmith Islam is about 600 years younger than christianity, so the (IMO incorrect) implication of saying that islam is a young religion is that they are as christianity was 600 years ago, ie. i the dark ages.

I almost feel like I watched a *_completely different interview/debate_* than everyone else did. I 100% agree with Rubin's analysis. And....I kept a tally. He agreed or thought a good point was made by Ben Affleck a grand total of......*_zero times._* And, aside from a poorly phrased word or two from Maher, he agreed with *_every single thing_* Sam Harris said. Again, that was my take entirely. So........what on earth is making everyone gang up on Harris and Maher?? Seriously? Did no one watch this whole debate? Affleck not only argued poorly(if you can call it an argument), but he did so with juvenile anger, outright lies, and accusations of _racism!_ Now _THAT_ is "gross," to quote -batman- Affleck.

Three simple thought experiments Ben Affleck could have employed before this tirade: 1. He is to imagine that he burned a Quran, in an act of artistic freedom, on Real Time. What would happen. 2. He is to imagine that, instead of Dogma being about Catholicism/Christianity, Smith and Affleck had made the story about Islam and Mohammad. What would happen. 3. He is to imagine that, instead of Kevin Smith making "Red State", needling Christian insanity at the Westboro Baptist Church, he had instead made "Islamic State", and made the story about an insane imam and his flock. What would happen. These are three things Ben Affleck may not have thought about. But he should. Enlightenment seeking Muslims need their voices heard and repeated, not any criticism of Islam silenced and shamed.

I think this was a beautiful analysis. I'd seen a clip of this when it first happened and this was my first time seeing the whole thing. I already respected Harris as a reasonable person, I just enjoy the way he comes to his conclusions. Batman just wasn't on his level, so many knee jerk reactions, unwilling to try understand them and throwing out the "R" word so easily. Even IF Sam were saying that Islam (the Koran, and other associated doctrine) is the mother lode of bad ideas, full stop. What is the problem with that? Not all ideologies, including religious ones, are created equal. One has to be the worst. At least Christianity has the tempering influence of Jesus, and his love thy neighbor, turn the other cheek philosophy. Muhammad was a warlord who spread the religion through violent conquest, and killing apostates (while it's certainly been done in the name of Christianity) is not actually one of it's tenets.

I think it's pretty clear what Sam Harris means when he says "Islam is the motherlode of bad ideas". Why apologize for him and say he probably didn't mean that the Quran is worse than other holy books? Sam's point is not that people are manipulating the Quran; his point is that the Quran has many bad ideas and it's not hard to draw a straight line from it to violence and subjugation. This liberal idea that "all religions are equal, all holy books are equal" is exactly the idea that is being criticized when Sam Harris says "We have to be able to criticize bad ideas". In other words, we can't just pretend that all religious ideas are the same.

Yea I notice on his shows the expressions and the timid Ness sometimes people like John and Anna show certain occasions at moments when he goes off the rails and starts being passionate, raising his voice because he has a strong opinion on X. X representing anything he is talking about. you'll see John and Anna just give a slight reply with a little tiny tiny rebuttle. you can see they are just backing of from the story. I've seen John at times try to be nice and give a nice rebuttle towards jenk but more often then not you can see he just wants to give his real opinion on the matter it's not all the time so don't get me mixed up its on every show. but you can see those little reactions time to time. I agree there's some opinions that's not generally agreed behind the scenes. secondly jenk being as strongly opinionated as he is people like David and rubin who is strongly opinionated and has their own vision. regardless who it is. it can lead to two people just butting heads all the time. I could be way wrong with my implications on that matter.

Rubin's poise, respect, and linguistical analysis should have headlined this story on the TYT main show. He mentioned at the start the media hype with altered edits and gross misinterpretations, of which I have found Cenk Uygur to have been one of the worst for doing just that. If Rubin had been on that original TYT panel, he might have brought more class and rational evaluation to this subject, as opposed to Cenk's sensationalism and misquotes that feed Cenk's agenda. Rubin correctly pointed out the clear and concise points made by Harris, and how Affleck was horribly obtuse and intentionally argumentative in opposition to a intellectual discussion. Thanks Dave, this was amazingly done.

Ok. I saw the whole thing again without your comments after seeing your comments.You have proven something which I admit I didnt see.Ben took a lot of things out of context. I'm under the impression that he has heard Harris and Maher on the past expressing themselves about Islam and he was ready to fire away.And I've heard Maher and Harris said a lot of out of place comments before about muslims. I agree with a lot of what Harris says. But Dave, it seems that everytime Ben makes an out of place argument you attack him. And every time Maher or Harris make a bad point you excuse them. You say that it was a little off but not big deal and you brush it off away. It is a big deal.Harris said that Islam is the motherload of bad ideas. It is not. There are bad ideas on all religions, religions also had a lot of good ideas and changed world ethics in some maners. He is mixing the horrific acts of extremist groups and allocating them on the beliefs of others. Thats what he is implying, Maybe he didnt frase it. But that what it means between the lines. He is more well spoken than Maher, because Maher has said so very directly in the past. Sure Harris says that there are others that are not like that. But Maher comes out with his billion Muslim argument wich puts all in the same basket. Harris does not correct him, he goes on. So the build up of the conversation builds toward those out of hand points. Ofcourse Affleck is putting too much fire before they even start.Harris talks about empowering that suppose minority that he is pulling out of his ass based an unnamed poll. But tell me. What on earth does he do to empower them? All he does is critizise their religión. For the avarege people who see that show or some other he talks in will come out disliking muslims more, even if he doesnt even mean it. US is already very anti islam in many ways. We dont need Sam Harris to make it worse making generalizations, he should work to make distinctions. He tried on Bill Maher Show, but he fell short and maybe because Affleck didnt let him speak. But I've seen Harris speak many times. Even on debates. And I dont see him making distinctions there either. I'm an atheist Dave, I've been hearing Maher for years. I didnt knew Harris back then. But I've hear almsost every video that Dawkins makes and I used to follow Dawkins. And this New Atheists like them are doing the same thing and its very, very distructive and alienating.

Re: "Harris said that Islam is the motherload of bad ideas. It is not. There are bad ideas on all religions" -- I find it bizarre that we're asked to pretend that each religion contains an equal measure of good and bad ideas. As I see it, it's too close to call between Islam and the Old Testament as to which is truly the motherlode of bad ideas. Fortunately there are no countries today attempting to implement the Old Testament as the law of the land. But the New Testament, by comparison--while it still contains its own share of bad ideas--just does not approach parity with Islam or the Old Testament on that score. Have you taken time to read what both ancient and modern Islamic scholars have written on topics such as the following? islamqa.info/en/84140 "The reason why the one to whom a homosexual act is done is to be executed" islamqa.info/en/811 "Why death is the punishment for Apostasy" islamqa.info/en/1105 "Does Islam regard men and women as equal?" islamqa.info/en/13737 "What is the ruling on intimacy with slave women?" There's clearly a network of bad ideas operating on the brains of the people who wrote those fatwas. And note that this is not extremist Islam. This is mainstream Islam in many countries. Sam Harris' central thesis is that beliefs affect behavior. Sam Harris' opponents meanwhile engage in every form of mental gymnastics to avoid grappling with this key point.

It was a Pew poll. I don't think they are known for bullshit polls. They clearly stated they are not including all muslims in the extremist category. The so called new atheist are being destructive because they bring the truth about the reality that we share. We are not going to advance as fast as we need to when the majority of people in the world believe that a god has control and we have little power over our future. These belief systems separate us humans like nothing else I can think of. We need to shed those old antiquated beliefs and lean on more updated philosophies. Religion marches against logic, reason and knowledge. It has ever since its conception. We have to speak out against what we know to be harmful. It is our duty as Humanists. Religions used to change with society or they died out and let knew ones take their place. We don't have that luxury anymore in todays age of print and electronics. We have to be able to discuss these things.
