Great one. CC is my band’s home away from home. In fact after Hurricane Katrina Steve we evacuated to Austin because Steve the owner offered to find us all places to live and placed all of our kids in school and really gave us homes and a welcome mat. We are forever in debt to him. Great guy. And he gave us us a weekly night which, can’t remember which night. I hope he didn’t move John Dee and James but I seem to recall it was a Wednesday. At any rate it was incredible being able to see John Dee,James McMurtry and Redd Volkaert every week for two years. The Continental Club, best club and club owner in the USA!

I saw Billy Gibbons get up at Continental Gallery to sit in with Johnny Moeller, Mike Flanagan, and Frosty in the early 2010s. He was sitting next to me at the bar, he got up, went to the closet by the stairs, opened the door and pulled out Jimmie Vaughan’s Coronado from a black case and walked up to the stage. That’s the Austin I remember and love.

My wife and I went to Austin maybe six or seven years ago . We had tickets for three nights at the Continental Club. I had heard many times about the matinee shows that Red Volkaert would put on so I had to go. That afternoon was worth the price of the trip. They tore the roof off in the best way possible. Thanks for these talks with JDG, I could listen to him for hours.

Redd was my neighbor out here in Bastrop County. I went to those matinee shows for well over 15 years. My buddy Earl Poole Ball has taken over that slot. Earl's awesome but I sure miss Redd.

Excellent advice from Jon Dee; be fearless. Joe Walsh explained it so succinctly in “Lucky That Way”: Started in the middle of nowhere I didn't have far to fall And the times I thought were the end of the world Didn't turn out so bad after all

Made a deal with my love. 25th anniversary in Maui for her…some random Wednesday night at the Continental Club for me. She got hers in Jan ‘20. My turn was set for the following March. We all know what happened then…was my first trip cancelled due to the pandemic. Still clawing my way back to the “no normal” I’ve yet to reschedule. Hang tough JDG, I’m coming soon

I visited Austin in 1996 and 1997 and I walked past the Continental and visited the fabulous One World guitar shop, just next door. Each time, I did not go to the club as there was some other band or musician playing elsewhere- so I saw Delbert McClinton, Anson Funderburgh with Sam Myers, Jesse Taylor, Asleep At The Wheel and I was really conflicted as on one of those nights, Sonny Burgess played the Continental. It would have been great have have seen him.

Otis, if you read these comments, you should do a segment with my buddy Earl Poole Ball. He played pianom with Johnny Cash for many years and worked with everyone. He produced and recorded with Buck Owens, The Byrds, Gramm Parsons, Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. Great storyteller.

Back in the 90s a local band called Son Yuma used to play the Continental on Wednesdays. They were great, and lots of fun. Their version of Lagrimas Negras was stellar. It was wonderrful until it got mobbed by all the move-ins that flooded into Austin in 96-97.

I actually met David Bowie at the Continental club many years ago. And yes, he was sitting in the back wearing flip-flops. He was there because the drummer and his band had his own band. They were playing that night. I like going to the Gallery to see James McMurty! One of the beet songwriters in the country. Has been for a long, long time
