Actor and style icon Bill Nighy has a very clear set of rules when it comes to dressing. We sat down with the cover star of our latest issue to talk all things menswear and style: which three items of clothing should be in every man's wardrobe? Which fashion trend does he always avoid? Is a trainer ever acceptable with a suit? These are his dos and don'ts

A wonderful actor. And clearly one of the last of the old school. I love his style and elegance. That era is long past. We inhabit the world comprised of athleisure and in a way, while these clothes are comfortable, they can never match the class of a well cut Navy Blazer and Grey Worsted or Flannel trousers, a pale blue shirt and a nice cravat worn with a plain pair of matte black oxford brogues.

Me? 'Sixty-something' years of age and still in reasonable trim, though rather hard to fit because of my NFL stature; 6'4" 240 lbs. At some point in my mid twenties I'd realized I look foolish in blue jeans and T-shirts. Dressing well is a bit of work and well worth the investment and effort. Good shoes last a long time. It will also improve your posture and public humor. A strong first impression is absolutely priceless...

Hardly. Cardigans? Nope. I definitely won’t be getting on that train. If I was some sort of male feminist luvvie perhaps I would. Also he buys Japanese raw denim jeans and doesn’t even know how to properly break them in or take care of them. He’s right about never wearing trainers or tan shoes with a formal suit, but apart from that it’s just some crusty old bloke caught in a time warp spouting off. Just because you choose to wear a suit all the time does not mean you then become some sort of sartorial authority. Also take a close look at his shirt collar in this vid…….sloppy.

Ironic mod dressing. I like it. The ironic aspect is perhaps the more difficult part to achieve. That may come from character. I stand with Mr. Nighy on this (and his opinion on skinny trousers.) Though being a retired librarian/bookseller, tweeds, corduroy and such, I would have to update my wardrobe to fit into the ironic mod mode.

I found a Francois jacket and waistcoat made in New Zealand by arrangement with Francoise et Cie, Saville Row, for 20 dollars. I watched several 'The Rake' video's and got the courage to wear them today. Given that I am a 5,7 and 62 yr old lady, I think I pulled it off. The young gents in this University town were green with envy and some ladies gave me big smiles. Oh the older chaps also gave me delighted smiles and there were many Farmers for some reason, who also couldn't help but look. The farmers were all jacket less but had lovely jumpers, not too long and very nice trousers. Tight pants on men, should stay way back in the medieval era, how can they stand not having a decent pocket, for those frequent necessary adjustments. Actually my ensemble, not a tweed, is a sort of striped tweedish brown, so technically I shouldn't have worn it in the City, what a bumpkin. I got a Vintage cable knit, white sheepwool jumper made for Ballynahowan, Connemara Marble Shop today, for 6 dollars, in perfect condition, so I know I can survive a winter being inordinately close to Antarctica, once again. Lovely to see you Bill, gorgeous as ever.

Excellent! That was well worth hearing. The Mod style is a good reference point for men's smart clothing, not so much the wacky "out there" swinging 60s stuff, but classic styles from about 1949-1967. There are photos of Steve McQueen in the mid-60s which could have been taken yesterday, that style genuinely doesn't date.

P.S. Don't get carried away by John Smedley knitwear. I belong to the generation whose mums and aunts and grannies knew how to knit. I still wear pullovers and cardigans my mother made for me decades ago. And they're bespoke--she invented her own patterns and I used to have numerous fittings while she was knitting them. I've looked after them and they still look good. Way better than that overpriced, machine-knitted John Smedley tat.

Bill Nighy talking about the real mccoys love that. Saw his article last year for, I think it was the anthology or something like that? Can't really remember, but they made him a lovely navy bespoke suit. Shame these sorts of things are too expensive for a lot of people to justify, but if you've got the cash I don't think there's any real excuse not to have one or two bespoke suits; you'll wear it at some point.

Look back on history, and see what you like - maybe find some good books on it to acquire a broad perspective and make your choices. The 1940s and 1950s was a nice period. In America, elegance - true elegance - crashed and burned in the 1970s. The 1960s was the significant transition period leading to that. Also, please keep in mind that truly well-dressed people are very rare these days. Most people look like they should be cleaning their home or going to or coming from a gym. Good luck.
