@HeroQuestFans3 жыл бұрын
yeah, tons of pro-lifers in the "non-white" world. people assume because most african AMERICANS vote democrat that being non-white must mean you're pro-choice. most democrats are white, just like most republicans are white. it boggles the mind that someone could try to turn it into a racial issue. then again there is the argument that poor people "need" abortion the most and the unpleasant history of the eugenics movement which seemed to place a special emphasis on poor "people of color" (as ones who "needed" their populations reduced). that doesn't mean you're automatically a racist if you're "pro-choice" but there's that. the idea that "old white men can't tell me what to do" is silly. the democrats in government who pass pro-abortion laws are largely "old white men" too, by simple matter of statistics. a law is either just or it isn't, regardless of the race, color, gender, or whatever of the person who proposed, supported or passed it. we don't want to live in a society where we have a different set of laws for each group of people, do we? and now we have a society where we can't even agree on where those categories begin and end! so no more laws? and really it's the genetic fallacy, because a pro-choice democrat wouldn't suddenly become pro-life if the law was proposed by a woman of color, or even by another democrat, they would simply imply that person was a traitor or crazy.

The fact _you people_ equate allowing women to choose which act is responsible to being in favor of abortion disqualifies you from adult conversation regarding this debate. We already know it varies, which is why some argue that it needs limits and oppose late-term abortion. I don't agree with Peter Singer. I’m not experienced, but I imagine it would be best to try and talk to her face to face. Remind her of all her 3 beautiful children and tell her to imagine that she never had one of them, instead that she allowed him or her to be killed in the womb. How might her children feel when they learn that their mommy took away a fourth sibling, didn’t allow him/her to even be born; they might wonder, what if it was them? I don’t know her reasoning for considering an abortion, but I imagine it is because a fourth child might be too hard to handle. Remind her that if she is really not able to support another child, she can put it up for adoption; that killing him or her is not the only way, nor is it the right way of going about it. There are probably thousands of willing partners who would adopt the baby in an instant.

I’m a mechanical engineer. Bill Nye has a mechanical engineering degree, but that does not make him an engineer. He is really an entertainer (I honestly though he was kind of lame even when I was ten). Isn’t Bill Nye pro contraception? I think if he keeps telling people that it takes a woman an average of two hundred ovulation (a little over fifteen years) cycles to get a verifiable pregnancy, that may not bode well for his alternate agenda. If any pro-life advocates here would like an in-depth scientific explanation of the fertilization process and when a cell becomes a human, Dr. Maureen Condic’s free white paper (online) When Does Human Life Begin? is unbeatable.

I believe Bill Nye's first argument wasn't "If you have a high mortality rate, you aren't human". I believe it was something closer to "If you can't hold someone accountable for the many 'natural abortions' that occur regularly, how can you hold someone accountable for the intentional abortion". I still feel it is a poor argument but I wanted to share non the less.
@Nate77HK4 жыл бұрын
Same argument. For example, just because ebola naturally occurs and kills many people, we don't permit people to deliberately spread ebola to others by saying, "Well it happens naturally anyway!"
@heroicaknight47354 жыл бұрын
That's the problem. Miscarriage (idk if what Nye says counts as miscarriage) is "natural," or at least unintentional. Abortion is both unnatural and intentional. It's like comparing cutting off life support to a patient who won't ever recover (with the family's permission) to a doctor stabbing the same patient in the neck. Same result, different motivations.

@mortensimonsen16454 жыл бұрын
Hi Trent. Thanks for a great rebuttal - although the opposition was laughable :) I think I may a few points to improve on your arguments - you'll be the judge! First I noticed Nye's argument about the "mortality rate". I don't think that was really Nye's argument - I think Nye tried to say "look - don't you intuitively agree with me that those fertilized eggs aren't really human - we don't usually think about them like that, do we?". So he was arguing more along the lines of "emotion/intuition". I think the whole of Nye's argument revolved around "it just seems right", "it just seems wrong". I say this because I know you want to represent the other parties as accurate as possible. The other point is about how to explain there are only two sexes. I think if you introduce the idea (which you almost did) of a *third* ingredient necessary to make a zygote - then it will be abundantly clear that no matter how many combinations of XXY and YYXX, it doesn't constitute a new sex. The idea of two sexes rests upon the biological fact that a zygote needs only *two* things to come into existence. Therefore, we can be more than willing to admit some people have an indeterminate sex, but that is of course not a new sex - it's simply an abnormality. Wish you the very best!

I think arguments regarding human biology surrounding the binarys and biological lack of evidence for transgender people miss the point. Regardless that circumstance, people have the liberty to seek being whatever gender they see themselves as, regardless of their biology. And on the topic of naturality of sexual interaction, I also see it to be irrelevant, at least for legislation. The focus should instead be by the lack of harm to others. Which means consent with full awareness of consequences for living beings (no children, no animals) and for nonliving things (people often have attractions to such things) they must be your own property (not someone elses things)

Scientifically the question that has to be answered is manifold/ First, we must define what human is. 2. we must define when does personhood begin. I can totally say a zygote isn't a person, though human. Somewhere between a fetus and a baby, a person lays its roots. Until science knows more about the brain and development it can't say much about the morality of that question. I see he just mentioned personhood which shows he is aware of the tangents to this. Im pro life with the disclaimer that a woman can choose to abort if her life is threatened. I justify this as we consider killing in self defense justified under threat to life or grievous bodily harm. Im also quite sure those conditions are exceedingly rare. Given that being a portion of the moral landscape this issue relates to, its disingenuous to say science can determine this issue. Ive explained this argument to many pro abortion people as the my body my choice they love to chant is about the worst argument ever.

Even if science did know more about the brain, it would still be difficult to define "personhood" such that it is somehow separate from humanity. If all humans are not necessarily "persons", but "personhood" is dependent on an individuals ability to use a brain in some way, like thinking, consciousness, awareness, sapiences, or use rational thinking, and we also accept that personhood begins sometime between conception and birth, then why aren't many animals like dogs, cats, or cows considered persons then? If the answer is well those animals don't exhibit one/some of those traits at "person" levels the criteria for personhood now directly implies many born humans don't meet that standards, like newborns or the mentally handicapped. This also goes against the assumption that "personhood" begins between conception and birth. So what one is left with is either lowering the bar to include all born humans, but in the process includes many animals whom most agree are not persons. Or raising the bar to exclude animals but in the process, exclude many borns humans such as newborns. Essentially for an idea of personhood that is separate from humanity to work, you have to either accept dogs, cats, cows as persons in order to include newborns, or reject the idea that newborns are persons to maintain that animals are not persons. Or you could simply reject the premise of humanity is separate from personhood and by extension reject that one gains "personhood" sometime after conception.
