"How loud can we be?" Bill Orcutt asked as his guitar quartet tuned their Telecasters and Jazzmasters for sound check. A wild deconstructionist whose catalog spans a splatter of hardcore punk, noise and electronic music, Orcutt has written and improvised on four-stringed guitars for four decades, culminating in the ecstatic minimalism of last year's Music for Four Guitars, each part played and dubbed over by himself.
At the Tiny Desk, however, Orcutt brought along a who's who of forward-thinking guitarists to perform these rowdy, giddy and shreddy pieces: Wendy Eisenberg, Ava Mendoza and Shane Parish, who transcribed the original recordings. From a frenzied hoedown ("Or from behind") and feedback-humming drone-pop ("In the rain") to something resembling Henry Cow playing Norwegian black metal ("In profile") and paradoxically Brutalist complexity ("Or head on"), each song is a short burst of finger-flicked frenzy.

I can only listen to music all day and night outside of work and I still can't get enough. I love this kind of music. After being out of the hospital last week, I am watching amd listening to the best music ever at the ageof 55 Thanks. Incredible quartet playing in unison on guitar. Thanks again, Best

I wish I knew about these people. I witnessed something spectacular at the basement of a church, just before last Thanksgiving. Jake Thistle was one of the 8 musicians and songwriters that appeared before me. Jackson Brown, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Pettys wife and brother Bruce, do know all about jake. Jake even has one of Tom Pettys guitars. Please, keep going to shows with as little as 10 people. I did once and it was a young lady by the name of Kathleen Edward's. She recently performed at banoroo. I still have the cd that she signed for me on her previous tour, that was 20 years ago. How did I get to speak to her back then. I just bought her cd when I entered the old and battered venue, located on South Street, Philadelphia, the t.l.a.. I think this the guitar quartet was amazing. If I can get out into the world instead of a hospital or doctors office, then I will. Until then, I need u and others to support all of these hardworking musicians. The hardest 2 song writers and performers I know in the past 5 years are Jake from above, and m.i.L.C.k..Her real name is Connie, and I even got an email from her in my last birthday!!! Dreams do come true!!!!!! Best wishes always, Robert zeligson

@@TeddyBullard I'll share an analogy, a story and an observation: 1. When I was a kid I thought Scotch was the most disgusting thing I'd ever tasted or smelled. Over time, I grew to appreciate the variation in flavor, tannins (texture) and where I experience the flavor -- beginning, middle or end. Additionally, the "feeling" experienced through uniqueness and contrast with other Scotches is now its own pleasure. 2. I went to a Medeski, Martin and Wood show 20+ years ago. Afterwards, a friend who came along was unmoored -- "where's the melody, what's the structure? I felt lost!" In the context of some styles of music (jazz, improve), familiarity with what has come before and the conversation that's being spoken, is part of the experience. It's very different to walk in on part of conversation without the last 5 minutes of context. But if you've been part of that conversation from the start, it all makes sense and fits together. My experience of listening to Bill is he's playing music that was inspired by, and in conversation with, what's come before. If I were to come in cold, without 35 years of listening to "complex" music, (starting with Frank Zappa in high school) this music would be worse than random static. 3. Lastly, at this point in my listening, texture, dissonance, and uniqueness are what float my boat. It's like understanding what object or person your seeing via their shadow, or how light bounces off a surface. There's a whole world of abstracted representation and communication that comes through these compositions and performances (for me). Sorry to be longwinded. I hope I was able to convey some sense of why I love this performance. Oh yeah, also: Some folks just hate Scotch and will never like it. That's totally fine. Different strokes for different folks... Cheers!
