Bill Russell's historic collection to be offered at historic live auction in Boston

Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell is partnering with Hunt Auctions to offer historic basketball artifacts and personal materials from his personal collection. "CBS Mornings" co-host Nate Burleson sat down with the former NBA star to discuss how it felt to be back in Boston as he takes us through his career and legacy.

i agree with audie conrad. i grew up in maine. there was no cable. i listened to way more games on the radio called by the immortal johnny most then there were on television. we only hoped the celtics might be on the NBA game of the week sunday afternoon. i was only 8-9 years old when my dad introduced me to the celtics on a black and white television set. i started playing basketball because of that. played in college. russell. heihsohn. sam jones. kc jones. etc etc. i was in 7th grade. was in the garden. saw celtics vs. 76 ers. wilt chamberlain.

As a boy growing up in New England I had the privilege of hearing the games called by the immortal Johnny Most. There was no black or white players on the radio...only Celtic green.☘ Thank you from the bottom of my heart Mr. Russell.

I love Mr. Russell a lot. He's smart. Always considered him thoughtful. Highly skilled w the rock. Highly competitive . Seems to be a good guy. Always liked his ability to not care who he was playing. Loved that he played for my (past) favorite team. If I was to interview him, I would ask why, in my mind, he would demean his greatness by talking about how difficult it was growing up black? Mr. Russell's greatness, is do, in part, because he overcame the obstacles "in spite" of them. That he overcame them, speaks to his spirit. The human spirit to survive, and more than that, to achieve greatness "in spite" of it all. Growing up in the 50s 60s and 70s, I never thought of Mr. Russell as "a black man." I only knew that he was great, and that I, as a little (white) boy, would pick him first to be on my team. 🤓🏀🤓🏀🤓🏀🤓🏀🤓🏀🤓🏀🤓🏀🤓

I would imagine he would respond with "because of the youth today" Imagine the great strides in more than difficult times men like Bill lead the way thru....just to watch so many youth turn to gangs, violence, drugs, ect when times are far easier than his. Bill has always, and still currently mentors, and his goal in life from his words is "to leave the world a better place than when he arrived".

Bill Russell's greatness is enhanced when you realize he accomplished all that he accomplished while being in a country, state, city that treated him as sub-human. The top paper in Boston did not like the Celtics because the team had a black player, hotels wouldn't serve him or have him enter the front door, Boston citizens broke into his house, vandalized it with the n-word and dumped feces all over his bed. So while the city of Boston showed him hate, he still delivered 11 rings. That sir accentuates how great he is.

Cleveland Summit...(3:18)It was a sunny Sunday afternoon, June 4, 1967. Some of the greatest black athletes in the country gathered in a nondescript office building in Cleveland. Just listening to him, you can tell that the racist environment back then still really bothers him. While European Americans would say that was years ago, Nope, if you got bullied or something dramatic happened in the past you still may have feelings about it until you died. This is why I'm glad that Trump was President for a minute it exposed the country's divide and half of the country has a racist mentality. Now, we know America still has a big problem to solve. If it wants to be considered to be a great country.
