The Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge is situated in west central Arizona at the far southern end of Lake Havasu and protects one of the last ecologically functioning river habitats in the southwestern United States. One of the last stands of naturally regenerated cottonwood-willow forests grows here, along the Lower Colorado River. The refuge is home to a wide variety of wildlife and waterfowl in the winter. The Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge is free and open to the public.
We hiked on the Peninsula Trail at the Bill Williams National Wildlife Refuge. The trail is one mile round trip and partially paved. The Peninsula Trail leads down a stretch of reclaimed land and the beautiful Lake Havasu surrounds you. The trail feature native plants, fishing piers, benches, cabanas, and interpretive signs about the refuge.
We also explored the first four miles of Planet Ranch Road. This area offers visitors an opportunity to see several species of birds, snakes, lizards, big horn sheep and javelinas. There are access points along Planet Ranch Road for hiking trails and views of the cottonwood-willow woodlands.
