Good luck tomorrow. This has been a warm season here in NC. I went with cheap security cameras on my property. They work good as long as you can can get a Wi-Fi signal and power to them. We have had just as much fun watching the wildlife in real time. Look forward to your next update.

It is still looking too mild from what I have seen. It needs to be bitter cold (lows in the single digits) to really get them heading to food in daylight. Plus, I have so much food that the deer are scattered. That is good for them, but not so good for trying to shoot them.

Good Luck Hunting! As soon as I'm over this stupid sickness I'll be heading out here in Pennsylvania for hopefully a late season buck. I still have 3 shooters around but like your deer the movement is mostly at night. A couple are either moving earlier out towards food in the evening and heading to bed later in the morning so if they can mess up 20 to 30 minutes either way I may get my chance. Thank you for all your helpful information you have shared over the years through your videos and articles written.

Same thing here Bill. I haven’t been there since the end of November. While I’m glad several targets made it through, it seems they move to food at 10pm or so. They have moved to bedding on the southwest slope to stay warm. Covid hit me like a ton of bricks the week before Christmas. All better now but not optimistic about tagging a mature buck this year. It is my favorite time of the year to explore the terrain and learn. Into February

Great video. I'm getting the same night movement on my place in Arkansas. I agree with having two cameras to really understand what is happening on a plot. Last year, I did get daytime pictures in an area that has briars, oak regeneration , and just a high stem count, brushy with some cedars. I will be checking those cameras soon

Hey Bill, well my season is officially done. Went out December 23rd evening after my target buck and decided to pull a nearby camera card while going to the stand. Checked the photos that night at home my target buck was there Dec. 21st and shed his right side.....bummer. Two years of pictures of him, not 1 daylight picture yet, so I will be watching your episodes the next year for tips and tricks on getting these deer into daylight. Merry Christmas and have a safe new year!

Happy New Year!! Hard to tell exactly, but it looks like you have a pretty good buck-to-doe ratio. Depending on the other hunters with food plots in your area, you likely are seeing a 2-3 mile radius of deer drawn to your property. I wonder where all the big bucks are unless they are simply not finding your food plots from surrounding properties. While big bucks tend to be homebodies and can live on the acorns/browse, I would expect to pull some additional bigger bucks from surrounding properties. Wishing you more of what you hope for in 2024 Bill!

Hi Bill, unfortunately my season ends on the 31st. Not sure I an going to even go out. The lack of does, heavy hunting pressure from the neighbors and lack of bucks makes me believe they could use a break. Besides almost all of my pictures are at night. I am worried because my brassica plot has began to rot from the temps being so warm. Not sure when winter actually comes if the plots will offer them any food between now and spring green up. Thanks for the update and have a safe and happy new.

Spots 7&8 look amazing!!!I have finicky cameras too. When they don't like a card, it will show error. If I keep pulling the card out and putting it back in until the error isn't showing, and it's showing the date and time, they work great. It took a while to learn that though.

Very well produced and edited video. I really loved the aerials showing the camera locations and plus the photos of the bucks with the moon in the background was awesome. If you do another similar video, can you show what direction the cameras are facing. Always remember that just because they didn't come in front of your cameras doesn't mean they weren't 10 feet from their view. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas and a blessed healthy new year Bill for you and your family Really enjoyed your reading a Christmas story from the Bible Watching all your videos of your new farm hopefully teaches a great many deer hunters even Iowa arguably the best big WT buck state on earth has only so many big bucks and they are not living on or in every block of timber in Iowa You have my admiration for being so persistent best of luck To be absolutely honest I am significantly shocked so few of your deer are showing up in daylight you obviously have a good deer density on your farm but unless there is significant hunt pressure in your area I can not imagine why they are feeding only at night and even if they're is significant pressure in your area its not so on your land I have considerable experience hunting late season private land and the farms I hunted (3 over 5 years) were all under 200 acres and surrounded by heavily hunted farms but I was one of only 3 hunters on the farm and he hunted very smart and carefully to minimize our impact and always saw good daylight deer movement and we has no food plots only left over harvested crops or good acorn crops Very perplexing
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 6 ай бұрын
I think you answered your own question to some degree, with less food, the deer might be more concentrated and that might make them easier to kill, but the biggest issue missing here is the lack of cold weather. We had a really cold snap in December last year and the deer were everywhere in daylight. I had less food then, but the weather was biggest difference. Maybe these deer are used to pressure. I have only owned this a couple of years and maybe they were hunted hard here before I bought it and they are just prone to nocturnal movement by habit. That seems to fit given how few mature bucks were on this place when I bought it. I am guessing it was hunted pretty hared through all the gun seasons.

I had my big 10 show up last night that has been gone for a month, and before that he was gone all of November, was good to see him, and I got another giant that has been showing up a lot on another place, bad thing is I have no stands hung, but there all middle of night pictures tho, other than a couple days he was in there right at daylight but it's thick mountain country so there is no way to hunt off the ground without out getting busted, I got busted twice in an hr trying to watch a big thick holler so I just left, I was thinking about taking my climber in there but it's so noisy it makes me nervous, lord knows they won't put up with much this time of yr, great video as always bill!!!
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 6 ай бұрын
That is good news Troy. Cold temperatures would help get them moving in daylight, but otherwise it may be tough. Hang-on stands can go in pretty quiet, as long as you can sneak in undetected. I have put them up several times with deer bedded within bow range! Pretty cool. You just have to go slow and be very quiet. Good luck.

I only have 2 hang ons and there set at the moment, I was thinking of moving one of em but there quite aways apart and I have to go back to work Monday, I considered doing that yesterday but by the time I fed em the day got away from me, I have a latter stand I thought about using but just seems to risky, these big bucks require a lot of work,lol I have to feed at the house today so I may pull a set and hang tomorrow if the cameras tell me he's not to close, I wasn't expecting to find the 2 big boys I did mid season after my home buck disappeared so it's been a little crazy trying to figure them out, I have til end of January to hunt so better get my ass in gear and just do it, I never hunt this late in the year so I'm learning a lot as I go, your vids help a lot with that, but next yr I will be running cams on all 3 places early in the yr all the way through the season, and I'm gonna step my mock scrape game up and have sets ready to go, I usually don't even get a shooter so 3 was not expected, I have not killed in 7 yrs cause I just got tired of shooting young bucks, I can say this mature bucks are definitely a different animal and I may be to cautious most of the time but I'm conservative and patient and I kinda like playing the long game, but I have learned more about mature bucks this yr than all others combined probably and that's a win for me, I hardly ever get 2 yrs of history on bucks but if I do next yr they better watch out, lol

I was in Waukon yesterday during the snow, hopeful it would turn something on at home, only the strong wind turned on at home. Only two sits left for me to wrap up my season, this afternoon I’m going against all odds and heading into the woods very close to a bedding area. 40degrees 😳 with the best wind for that spot. Tomorrow it’s a stand stuffed in a big old cedar right on the edge of the food plot with the most promise. Thanks for your updates, if nothing else you’re not alone with the end of the season blues. Bill, do you have other cameras spread throughout the timber? I leave my cameras out for an entire season and typically go get them at some point in early to mid-January depending on snow depth. I don’t check them during the season unless I’m walking relatively close to one on the way to one of my sits. I’ve got a few cell cams that I use, but primarily they’re regular cameras. The cell cams are in key high traffic areas or key bedding so I can have an idea of what bucks are in the area during the season. However, I learn more from the cameras that I leave out all season. Those areas are typically undisturbed all season and I get to see when the deer like to use certain areas over others. It doesn’t help you that season, but historically it’s great intel and surprisingly reliable in future years. There’s just certain areas that the deer tend to use heavily for about a week or so and then it’s very sparse. I’ve noticed a ton of consistency throughout the years often times to the day. What I have noticed is that some years the “whole cycle”, if you will, starts sooner or later than other years. But generally the timelines after become fairly predictable. Obviously, each year is different- heavy mast crop years change things but if you compare each heavy mast crop year you’ll notice similar trends between those years that differ from other years. I’ve learned a lot since I started doing this with my cameras. The cell cams let me know when they actually show up, but the historical data is pretty darn close and I know more about how they use the property once they’re here from that. Before I used to find the sign which is good, but I felt like I was always a few days behind the “burst” of activity in a specific area. Since I started doing this I can have an idea when that activity is going to start and have increased the amount of nice bucks I see in small parcels that don’t handle a lot of pressure well.

I am sure some of them know I am coming and going. But, I have been out on the farm a lot over the months working on plots, even checking cameras, etc. I wouldn't necessarily drive some of these routes if I was actually going in to hunt, but for the sake of quick midday camera checks this method is not super damaging. I have done it this way for 15 years. Most farms around here have some human activity on a regular basis (farmers, cattlemen). Maybe there is a price to pay, but as long as I stay away from their bedding areas, they seem to forgive me driving through pretty quickly. At least that is what I have seen on my trail cameras.

Bill, I have noticed the same thing on the nocturnal bucks here in western IL. I haven’t had but one day with daylight buck pictures in two weeks. Very little hunting presssure. I did take a doe during our late antlerless season opener, and have had somewhat frequent pictures of does and button heads during daylight, but even younger antlered deer stayed on nights. 12 different bucks since Dec 15th. I can only wonder if it’s weather related as we haven’t had those extreme cold temps that make them want to get midday sun? Weird late season for sure. It will be interesting to see what the next couple of weeks bring weather wise and how the bucks change patterns.
@bill-winke

I would almost guarantee it is the weather and maybe to a lesser extent a few remaining acorns in the woods. I don't think we have a ton of hope here as our season closes on January 10 and I don't see much in the extended forecast that looks cold. Maybe since you close a bit later, you will see a cold snap. Good luck.

Ruts just startin to tickle here, jan 18th here is equivalent to your nov 7th, 10th or so being halloween, weather good, took a nice 4 year old yesterday workin a mock scrape on a baby turnip killplot clearly feeling very very randy 😮 , if i were a man of more means, i swear id be hunting ruttin whitetail from nov 1 to feb 10, standard rut plus something leased or outfitter over towards the Mississippi river for the dec rutting or north georgia dec as well I think, and if not we actually have a section in bama that ruts dec ..restocked deer in 70s from all over i think is why..especially the ones that came from barrier islands off southern coasts..Then north bama for first 2 weeks of jan, im in the blackbelt, i get peak conception here yearly on jan 20ish, mostly couple days later if any difference. for the ridge where there wasn't any daylight activity, could it be that it is too far from good bedding. creating some cover cover closer to the corn in future years would get them bedding closer, make them feel more secure and move during daylight?

Interesting, I wonder it there would be an opportunity to hunt back in the timber and try to catch that shooter on his way to the field? I did that once and set up a 1/4 mile in and got a buck that never came to the food before dark. I just followed the trail back to where it started branching in the snow and hung a stand. Took a couple days but he gave me a 20 yrd shot.

Most all my pics were at night from the beginning of Nov through end of Dec. (MN). I hunt public so leaving the cameras out can be risky. I put the cameras about 10 ft in the trees so its not reachable. I get really good pics. (see my most recent video). Have you considered mounting the cams on the blinds? Get them up in the air? Thanks, I appreciate that. The problem with the card I used was the adapter, I think. I had a card with a micro-SD chip in it. It had worked in other cameras so I assumed the best. The camera formatted the card and showed the size so I assumed it would work. It took two or three photos and then stopped. When I pulled it, the camera display said "SD Card Full". I knew I was in trouble then. Takeaway, every camera manufacturer is a bit different in what cards it likes and even what batteries they like (I prefer to use rechargeable batteries, but some cameras won't acknowledge them). Have a great day.
@uoutdoors
@uoutdoors 6 ай бұрын
@@bill-winke micro SD adapters typically won’t work in most cameras, it’s probably more rare that they do work. Definitely stick to actual SD cards in game cams unless they actually have a micro SD slot in the cam. For batteries the Cuddeback G series likes Rayovac High Energy D’s best, rechargeables are a no go in those cameras because they won’t have enough voltage for the cam to function. On your H-20’s I’d have to check again to see if they can do rechargeables, can’t recall off the top of my head.

Thanks and Happy New Year to you too. Yes, it is always tough in this type of terrain when you mostly have bottom access. I can access from the top on the farm north end of the farm, but that is not where the buck I have been hunting is living. I will get that fixed during the coming years as I add screening in the bottoms and make the ridges thicker so the deer can't see or hear as far. But even given a perfect situation, the deer just aren't moving in the open this year. It is really strange. I think to the be successful, I would have had to go in after them, which creates more intrusion and more risk. I will fix that during the off-season too, but finding more accessible stands that are deep in the cover. Very hard to do that here without walking through deer. Good luck.

Andy, yes I still wear the waders, but it is super hard to work these cameras with gloves on. I don't think I ever wore gloves when actually pulling cards from the cameras. As long as you keep that contact to a minimum, you really don't leave much scent. I haven't changed anything in my routine. The waders are the key as few deer actually go up to the camera itself, but many would cross my scent trail if I wasn't careful about the boots/waders.

So, if you are looking for those things, it definitely will perform. I have been happy with it, but I just wish someone woul make an electric four-wheeler. Do your neighbors have the same problem with deer not daylighting? I have to believe that the amount of intrusion and traffic even to just check cameras has to have an impact on the deer behavior, bedding, overall activity. Would be a great study next season to do one half of the farm the same as you are doing this year and the other half with cell cameras and no intrusion other than to hunt and see if anything changes.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 6 ай бұрын
None of my neighbors hunt as much as I do. In fact, most don't really bowhunt or have food plots, etc. They just gun hunt and do deer drives. However, others in this area (farther out) are seeing the same thing - only nighttime movement. I hunted that ridge in question one time in the past month. They are just nocturnal because it is warm and there is way more food on this farm than they could ever eat. So there is not urgency to move in daylight. I am not saying the ATV putt-putting along the trail doesn't have any effect on deer, but it is very temporary. I have done this for many years and know what I can get away with. As long as they don't catch you out there hunting them, they forget about it really fast - especially if it is something that happens regularly.

He is not showing on cameras right now though. But there are other spots on the farm where he could be feeding where I don't have camera. I should probably put cams in those areas too, but they are a long ways from the buildings - two miles by trail and probably about four miles by road. I am going to assume he is still here. There is a really big 2 year old that is still showing up. He would probably score around 150. He will be a world class deer if he stays here a few more years.

Bill I remember you saying the placed you leased prior to owning this farm wasn't very far. What do you see as far as mature buck from that lease to your farm? Seems from pictures there are very few mature bucks on your farm compared to that lease. Why do you think that is?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 6 ай бұрын
You are right, the two properties are about 4 1/2 miles apart as the crow flies. That lease was loaded with bucks in 2020 (very impressive) and then fewer in 2021. Not sure why they disappeared - had to be hunting pressure on bordering farms. But I did shoot two very nice bucks there in the two years I had it leased. It was (and probably still is) significantly better hunting than my farm. There were no cattle on about 2,000 acres in that area so I think that helped and about 1,100 of those acres had some level of deer management - passing up younger bucks. I tried hard to buy it, but no dice. So when this came up I made the move. Time will tell if I can make this farm as good as that one. Mine will keep getting better, but it is going to take about three more years before it is noticeable to the viewer as the bucks here get old enough to hunt. I am tempted to start hunting other properties (I am related to half the county so getting permission to hunt other places would be realistic), but I feel like I should stick with the one I bought. Maybe next year I will branch out a little. It is tough hunting a farm this size with basically one or two mature bucks.

Do you think your deer are maybe nocturnal because of your camera checking pressure ? I assume if you ran cells that would mean less impact or more daylight movement. I’m sure you’ve thought of that already. It’s hard to believe you have so little daytime activity with such great food. What’s missing ?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 6 ай бұрын
What is missing is the cold weather and I think there are still tons of acorns on the ground. I can't believe the deer have gotten them all eaten up by now since there were literally millions of them. I have a lot of oak trees and they were almost all loaded with acorns this year. Combine all those acorns with much warmer than normal temperatures and you get deer with no urgency to move during the daylight. There is no food stress on this farm so the deer are living on their terms and not on mine. It doesn't look like that will change per the forecast any time soon. So I will have to chalk up as "it was just one of those years." Good luck.

How do you explain why the deer become nocturnal even on land that has no pressure, plenty of cover, and plenty of food. This year seems to be a strange year for deer movement over a lot of the country. I hunt public land only but this year we aren't even seeing deer in the fields or crossing the roads before daylight and after dark. There seems to be way less hunters this year also. There are lots of well used trails, plenty of rubs and scrapes, and a bumper crop of acorns this year. No matter who you talk to, they are also saying all their pics on trail cams are all after dark and no pics during shooting hours. I have every other weekend and sometimes days in a row in consecutive weeks and jave only seen maybe a dozen deer all year and haven't seen a buck (not even a spike) all year. It's always hard hunting public land and late season but this year something has really changed. It's like the deer have evolved into a higher intelligent species. Everyone thinks the deer just aren't there. I beg the differ with all the sign I see in the woods. Any ideas or tips that may be helpful as you mentioned you have seen this before during your hunting career.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 6 ай бұрын
I have not seen this before, not to this degree. I am not 100% sure, Donald. It is the same here - a very strange year. My theory, for what it is worth, is that there are so many acorns still on the ground that the deer remain in the timber eating acorns and are not coming out in the open until after dark. That, combined with the mild weather pattern, seems to make sense to me, but possibly there is something else at work that I am missing. It is amazing though that this is so widespread (all across the country) and the only thing that seems to be the same in all areas is the abundance of acorns and the mild weather. Like you, I am sure they are here, they just aren't moving in the open this year - at least not during the day. Good luck.
