The drums are like a heartbeat and the background vocals are like breathing in and out. Its so soothing and then Bill's story-telling voice over the top, the guitar gently weeping. Magic, so simple, yet so clever and quietly devastating.

It took a long time for the general population in America to understand how the pain and horror of such a war affected its participants. That only happenned because progressive society and on-the-ground everyday people started to liberate information and loosen up the strict control that those in power always had over such wartime information. That strict control was completely normal throughout all history, up until then. Now, here we are 50 some-odd years later looking at it from 2 full generations of liberated media and all sorts of progressive political branches run wild, and perspectives are sooo radically different. My question becomes: If all wars through all of human history were privy to the loosening of control that came about since Vietnam and thereafter, how different would the world be? If the struggles and triumphs of the Trojan war were given this exposure, would we still celebrate it? If all the battles fought with the native american tribes could have benefitted from mass media coverage, there would be no cliches like 'Off the reservation', and no cruelly named sports teams. And what of the Nazis' reign? Its simply unimaginable that such horrors would have been allowed to perpetuate by the rest of the world if they'd have known about it from the man-on-the-street. Mind blowing to even consider that... ok, i'm done.

The greatest anti-war anthems have empathy. You are right. I love this with all of my heart. My dad was lucky enough to draw a good number in the draft. Many of his friends weren't. I knew that when I was 14, and we were standing at the Vietnam Memorial in 1988 (I was 14), and my dad broke down crying. I had never seen him cry.

@@misomaya : Thanks very much for your response from the heart. I too saw my dad cry when my mother died (1961) - I was seven years old then - in apartheid South Africa. It is a sad sight indeed when a grief-stricken grown man cries and aches from the depths of his soul. I wish you well in the years ahead. .

Came to this after rereading a Rolling Stone article about Bill from 2015 where Questlove was quoted saying how he and John Legend recorded "I Can't Write Left-Handed" in the hopes of Bill liking it enough to allow QL to produce an album for him. I'll be listening to that next. I didn't remember his back story of how he came to fame later in life and how he walked away from the music industry when it didn't suit him any more, which made him all the more impressive. He was a regular guy with an incredible voice. He knew how to write songs that were easily relatable and powerful. One of my absolute favorites and one of the greats.

Mr Bill Withers....a national treasure, in my opinion. Along with Ray Charles, Mr Withers was one of the VERY FEW recording artists, who covered all the bases. Listen to most of his catalogue, and you realize that he sang, soul, funk, pop, rock, country, folk and r&b. Stevie Wonder said as much, when he inducted Bill, into the Rock & Roll HoF...he believes that Bill's music, really does touch every culture. RIP, to one of "the great ones"

Nobody was more an astute political observer than Bill. His introductory rap to this Vietnam protest song is an exemplary model in storytelling. The song itself is a moving blues-gospel in which Bill insinuates himself into the soul of an American soldier. Bernorce Blackman's ineffable blues guitar fills and the voices lend this real force. In other words, the best anti-Vietnam war anthem I've heard in all my years. It can't help but to burn into your skull.

Here ....then the music scene our drafted boys returning to recover through ‘soul’ music. Here In Can’t Writ Left Handed Bill deeply sensitively , soulfully, prays the blues of a returned war veteran. Bill’s emotional mood balances Gill Scott’s.
