The "Honeymooner" (at least that's what they called him in 2004) John Schmidt of Florida faces off with the powerful Larry Nevel. Both players break the balls with great power. But pool is a finesse game and pocketing balls with surgical efficiency is the key to winning. This is the second of 13 feature matches from the 29th Annual U S Open 9-Ball Championship, the pool and billiard world's most prestigious title. Every September pool payers from around the world converge on Chesapeake, Virginia to compete for their share of the $200,000 prize fund.

Larry Nevel gets more action on the cue ball. I have seen him do some draw and follow shots that are just MINDBLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Larry God Rest his soul for some reason always struggled against me my record against him was 9 wins and 0 losses he did have a big break though for sure he always seemed so healthy and strong to me. He is last person I thought would pass away under 50 years old.very sad.

Cue power would mean that the player is able to spin the ball enormously because their technique is so advanced, that they can attack the ball with so much strength that they can move the cue ball around using spin

I'm mixed on my opinion about the glove since first of all I have never use one and also never use a closed bridge. I can't comfortably because my fingers are too small. People say you need to use a closed bridge for a powerful strokes but that is so very not true. It just means you need a more confident and true stroke. A closed bridge will help most people and should be used if possible however if your fingers are small and closed is uncomfortable the gloves will help, but still not for me.

In 9 Ball I'd agree with you. In 8-Ball or 10-Ball the break speed is far more important. Reyes can't break nearly as good as Nevel can. If he could, he'd never lose an 8-Ball Tournament.

I like both these players. It's a shame there is no money in pro pool.

Especially since the commentators are all guys who at one time or another were very dominant in their day on the table...

To the commentator, why do you want to keep predicting shots. Why not do what commentators are suppose to do and that's making comments on shots players decide to make AFTER they shoot them. You keep on trying to predict shots including drawing lines and circles BEFORE they shoot them which causes a lot more uninteresting chatter to listen to and diagrams on the pool table to see, especially when a game is made out of it which is the ultimate outcome for predictors. For instance, I hear the commentator say, "If I were he, I would shoot it this way or I saw it wrong." This commentator predicts this way, but how much better it would be if he would wait until the player took his shot, then comment on the shot he DID take, how he shot it, the english and speed he used, the angle taken and the shape he got for the next shot. This is real commentating.

At some points when they try to predict where the que is going after it hits whatever ball, you would think they would know by where he hits the ball..

What exactly makes someone have lots of cue power? I know that Neil Robertson, the pro snooker player from Melbourne, has this term applied to him as well.

stroke mechanics. any flaws are magnified when you hit it hard so most lose accuracy when they add too much speed. If your stroke is flawless and pure you can hit it super hard ( almost break speed ) without losing control, like Nevel does. Other players are afraid of that shot because they are risking missing the ball. Also draw magnifies any stroke imperfections so a power draw is difficult for players who don't have proper stroke foundation.

@doilyfilm but the commentator who comments on every single shot no matter how easy or difficult and gets half of them wrong is straight.

@mkjhagfv i can't stand snooker snobs. can't we cuesportsmen & women just realize that there are differences in all variations of cue sports? i don't like snooker that much,& it has nothing to do with smaller pockets on bigger tables, it's the point system(balls with value), the re-spotting, the hoidy-toidy dress code, it's boring on tv, but it's mostly due to the amount of players & fans that shit on other cuesports. o'sullivan & davis' 9ball record is deplorable. do you compare rugby to NFL??
