I remember awhile back she found it more hard to speak about it and mainly didn’t want to speak about it bc she didn’t want it to define her as a person. People need to realize that tic disorders can actually be hidden to varying degrees. This really is a thing. We're used to seeing documentaries about the most severe cases and while they are valid that is not the typical experience. My tics are minor in public and more severe at home in general.

My mum repressed hers quite heavily around my father - she was scared of him as we all were. She suppressed them in public too, but she could never suppress them completely. Without suppressing them, she would be quite loud with her voice, and bashing bench tops, the wall, and me as I walked by lol. It used to drive me nuts it really did. And I felt terrible for that too. I wish they had known more about it back then. My mum could laugh at herself. She was quite ocd as well - everything had to be in threes. Even if she dropped something and it smashed, she would have to pick it up twice more to drop it again. I really loved my mum. I wish she hadn’t smoked and she would still be alive. Smoking helped her tics.

My 27 year old daughter was diagnosed with Tourettes at 6 years old. Some days her tics were so bad that she would cry from exhaustion. This part of the interview just brings such pride for billie. She had mentioned in earlier years how she didn't want her tourettes to be her defining characteristic as an artist, hence not advocating for awareness early on and such. I'm so happy to see her comfortably talking about it now, with fame and confidence under her belt and this just adding on to the already extraordinary person we know she is. It affirms that she is more than good enough just as herself and doesn't need the 'diversity in disability' card to be seen, which I think she was afraid of, but can express that part of her life now with assurance. Letterman's always been a better interviewer and thinker than a comedian. I always thought the Late Night talk show format got in his way because it forced a clearly troubled man to cram in jokes and be funny, rush his guests through interviews (that most of the time were just promotional tours) to get to the next item/guest on the itinerary, chase trends/watercooler news, and plug products.

Does it really matter . Does it change your personal existence ? No it doesn't. She's right. Many of us don't know that we have friends, peers, or possibly family members that have Tourette, but sometimes it may get to the point where someone can feel like they've been laughed at or accepted for long enough. Either way, they're going to feel as though they're free to talk about it, and I can see Billie is not insecure about it at all, and that's what may or may not catch someone off-guard who does or doesn't have Tourette Syndrome. Also, you have to give props to the interviewer for asking permission before going over Billie's Tourette despite him thinking she was fed up with him.

A teaching assistant who i interacted with in primary school often would tick every few moments, I'm not sure if she had tourettes tho. But regardless, because I was exposed to the idea of ticking from a young age I accommodated pretty quickly and it was just normal to me. This is why talking about it so freely/exposure is important because people need to learn about it, you won't think twice about it if youre used to it and understand why it happens. This goes for all disabilities/disorders/syndromes, i really commend Billie talking about it so openly bc it can help others to understand. But ultimately its not just the person affected who the responsibility lies with, so we have to make an effort to educate ourselves and listen to them more.

She said that she suppress her tics until the interviewer asks a question because then the camera won't be on her as she tics. People first started noticing her tics (and she quickly confirmed that she had Tourette's) in 2018 when she was 16 and an unedited interview was posted. Almost all videos are edited to cut out questions or pauses, so this was less common with a 10 minute interview that had her on screen the entire time. Fans noticed that she'd turn her neck to the side, roll her eyes in odd ways, or raise her eyebrow repeatedly.
@punxie89
@punxie89 Жыл бұрын
There are older interviews from years ago where she tics, but I always found most of them were pretty subtle...like shaking her head, raising an eyebrow, subtle facial expression changes, etc. You can also suppress tics for a while, but they come out eventually either while in private or during breaks in between etc

It's frustrating though when people say they get incredibly offended, however, the person reacting to her tics may not know about it at all... like how can you expect someone to know how to respond to something they don't understand if they don't even know about it in the first place? It's not their fault you got offended. That's why I hope everyone can get to a place where they can talk about this stuff openly and without fear of judgement because education and conversations are the way forward so people don't just jump to getting offended, and people that don't have it understand it and respect it.

Completely. If we expect others to know (mind-read) what is going on with us...and then every other person, with their own idiosyncrasies, expects that of others too, it's not realistic. It also tends towards egocentricity. It's up to the person offended (for whatever reason) to not take things as personally (which involves questioning one's narratives etc) and to advocate for oneself. Communicate needs, boundaries and clearly and calmly state them. Breathe and move on. Not one of us has it all figured out about others...so we can't expect others to have it figured out regarding our unique realms either. Connection happens through vulnerability, sharing, openness. Disconnection happens through being easily offended, assuming, personalizing etc. If we want people in our corner, we need to chose things that encourage connection.

Sometimes the nature of the tic changes so it could be in your eyes, neck, shoulders etc. A lot of people think Tourettes is just about the swearing side of it but don't realise that it can be physical instead. Lol she didn’t actually say much about her Tourette’s. She just talked more about people’s reactions and David Letterman kept making sure he didn’t annoy or offend her

There's more to the interview and you can watch it on Netflix. She talked about her tics as a child, how they are now (she listed jaw clenching, ear wiggling, eye rolling, muscle tensing, and eyebrow raising as her most common along with the head jerking and finger twitching that she's already exhibited), and how they effect her daily life and stage performances.

My brother in law's friend had tourettes. He passed away. I remember the first time he did some facial tics and made some weird noises I was thinking, what the heck is wrong with him? After I realized what it was, I just completely ignored it whenever the tics would happen, like nothing was wrong at all. Not sure if that's the best way to handle it, but it seemed like the best thing I could do.

100% Ignoring it is the best way to handle it. There's this lady that takes the same bus as me sometimes that has tourettes tick. I feel bad imagining how embarrassed she might be, especially when these ticks happen when the bus is crowded. Tourettes sucks man, and there's nothing worse than people faking it for attention.

Honestly when it comes to my disabilities, I wish people would ask more questions. Especially when it comes to invisible illnesses, people are incredibly hurtful about it. People tend to assume things based on what “everyone knows.” Or they assume things and will tell someone else like it’s facts and it’s all BS. Just talk to me, ask. I’m not going to be offended. It shows you care, are empathetic and are trying to understand.

I have a mild form of Tourette’s that can become moderate when I’m stressed or anxious and I’m just so glad she speaks out about it❤ It can be annoying and bothersome when you’re trying to do something and the tics keep coming

...please research Tourette's Syndrome before commenting your "gotcha moment" Her tics lessen on stage (and she has had tics during the change in lighting before songs, most commonly "when the party's over" and "everything i wanted") like most people's tics go away during moments of high concentration. She showed a full tic attack from a few years ago in her documentary last year. That one was triggered by lighting too, and she has historically worn sunglasses indoors, especially back then.

I dont think you understand how tourettes works. Which is okay. When you have tourette's syndrome, you never really get tics when you are singing or preforming or just in an extremely focused mindset. Theres athletes that have tourettes that get the same question "why do i never see you tic if yoi have tourettes" and its because they are 'in the zone'. I dont really know how else to explain it.

Its like how if you have a stutter, or even an accent (sometimes), it will disappear when you sing. Even when shes not singing shes still probably very focused on entertaining the audience in some other way.
