The best description of her voice is haunting. It makes you want to cry like she is pleading for a love that doesn't hurt. Her troubles came through her tone.

Woah!!!! How was she in real life?
@freddymaf77543 жыл бұрын
@@ungradphysmath7438 Hi. I'm not DHL1930 anymore. But back to Billie. I was a fifteen-year-old musician at the time, and went with two friends to see her at this little hole in the wall club in Newark named Sugar Hill. Anyway, one of my pals, a good-looking black guy, requested a song (I forget which), and Billie answered in that raspy voice of hers, "Man, that only sold one record." To which my pal answered, "Then I'm the guy who bought it." Anyway, that got a laugh out of her. She'd taken a liking to my friend, and so she'd sit with us between sets. But she was very high, strung out, and needed to be helped onto the stage by her piano player, Mal Waldron. Still, as always, she sang beautifully. While she was with us, she didn't speak much, mostly just sat, and with what seemed to me a deep sadness in her eyes. Remember, this was a time when she was being hunted out by the powers that be. That's why she was even there singing in that tiny club in the first place. They'd taken away her Cabaret license and wasn't allowed to perform in NY anymore. Anyway, those were the circumstances under which I met this loveliest of ladies, Lady Day. And I'll never forget her.

The transparent pyramid is a deal breaker for me. There is ‘a man that is not worthy but you love him anyway’ and then there’s ‘so he’s committed all the worst crimes known to mankind in possessing that third eye in his head and inhabiting vicariously the vessels of others’. Also there’s a love triangle which might be a problem and then there’s millions of people are in that triangle and I’m cutting my losses. I miss when these songs meant something and human beings were free and not utterly vicious, ruthless and invasive..

Her voice and the lyrics, I think, capture the idea of tragic, imperfect love so well that its eerie. People may say she didn’t have a great voice, or it wasn’t as strong as Sarah Vaughn, or as sophisticated as Ella Fitzgerald. But Billie was Raw, and full of Emotions. She has so much pain and Sadness you can hear it her voice. She had the power to touch you with the emotions. That’s way she’s so great, and that’s why she’s my Favourite. She was the first jazz singer I fell in love with. And every time I hear a song, with that voice, I’m that’s Lady Day. My favourite Album is Lady in Satin. She was getting sick, and lost a lot of her voice. But if you hear the album. She still could move you.

When I listen to this song, I feel myself choke up. Though I've never been in her situation, I've seen it happen plenty of times. This song speaks for the women that love their significant other, even if he's mistreated her, and the optimism towards the end is what breaks me. Because that's exactly how these things go down. The woman suffers but then tricks herself in to thinking it's okay (maybe she thinks she can change his ways) and sticks around because she is still hopeful and still loves him. Such a sad song. Billie sings from the heart.

Billie's autobiography reads almost like a work of fiction, her life was so extraordinary and whirlwind, and by the end you are rooting for her self destructive self even though you're in the knowledge that she died a few years after publication. You can hear each ounce suffering dripping from her voice, people don't sing with soul like this anymore, and they'll never come close to matching Billie.

Miss Billie wrapped her heart around a song, and she took your heart along for the ride. Another one of my favorites. It speaks to the deepest feelings and says a world of things about love and loss. Miss Billie, no one ever spoke to the soul like you. There was tenderness in the despair, love when none was there, and just that little bit of hope we all need to survive. Thanks again, sweet lady, for all the gifts you gave!
