Great piece of infrastructure that should serve community and visitors for a long time.

If they ever get it opened. Been completed for almost two years now and they are saying at least another before it is usable. Seems that the college educated morons neglected to get RR right of way and private landowner right of way for the infrastructure to be put in to get to the bridge. Great planning!

Beautiful structure with a separate bike/walking path on the western side. Much as I hated to see road built thru our gorgeous Dover Park, they’ve done a good job of mitigating many of our problems. I look forward to the south side roadway being completed.

Now, only if MontanaDOT could fix the I-80 EB “exit” to itself, I-80 EB to Hardin/Sheridan, WY; it’s only one lane and way too sharp. Big trucks have to slow way down, then slog up the long hill away from Lockwood…

The bridge/overpass over the railroad and Coulson Road is under construction now. As soon as it’s completed a temporary connection to Coulson Road will allow public use of the new river crossing, even before the rest of the entire Billings Bypass project is completed. The railroad overpass is anticipated to be completed sometime in 2025. You can learn more on the project website: www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/billingsbypass/railroad.aspx

Was a membrane put down over the concrete before paving?
@MontanaDOT
@MontanaDOT 4 ай бұрын
There is a polymer overlay over the concrete on the bridge deck. A polymer overlay is a two-part epoxy product that adheres the aggregate to the deck that will seal the deck and provide an additional wear surface. There is no pavement on the bridge itself.

how long before they are back painting the steel structure of this and sandblasting all the rust off
@markc2643
@markc2643 3 ай бұрын
They used a type of steel that doesn't need painting. The oxide (rust) layer on the outside remains hard and slows corrosion way down. Just look at the U.S. Steel Tower in Pitsburgh. It was made of Cort-ten steel 50 years ago, and has never been painted, and will outlive everyone alive today.

@MontanaDOT

The bridge was predominantly complete in one construction season. Construction of the structure began on November 19, 2020, and the last deck pour was on November 18, 2021. The remainder of work was completed by July 2022.

Why is this known as "the bridge to nowhere?"
@skidoorulz4914
@skidoorulz4914 4 ай бұрын
Because it goes nowhere. No road there and they built the bridge and now it is unusable. Maybe by fall of 2025 there will be a messed up access to it but not until 2027 or 2028 will the entire project be done. They also screwed up and are putting a diverging diamond at the Johnson lane exit when they should have put off ramps and connection to this bridge from the I 90 - I 94 interchange and then there would have been another way out of Lockwood and then do Johnson lane diverging diamond. But Noooo! all of Lockwood residents have to put up with MDOT stupidity for at least 5 more years because The Lockwood exit is next. Knowing MDOT they will start that project right after Johnson lane is started and screw up the only 2 ways in and out of Lockwood!

Engineering design, materials and construction technology has improved and changed in light years of speed in recent years. Most of current bridge building work today was only something considered impossible 50 years ago. Compare dial telephone technology to cell phones of today. What is a wire? A telephone pole?

You don't paint the steel beams? I would think painting with weather protection or powder coat or anything would prolong the life of the bridge and make it worth the effort. idk but personally as a tax payer I would rather spend up front than risk it
@glennfoster2423
@glennfoster2423 3 күн бұрын
Not to worry. When the bridge exceeds the limits of its design and materials life, it cal be replaced more efficiently with new, stronger and easier things to work with built on a 3D "platform" of extrusion and completion on one afternoon (relative to today's methods) at one-tenth the cost of dollars and time. A protoje of Elan's is thinking about it as we speak

to insure eventual bridge failure, always start with rusty steel...... you would really think that there would be corrosion protection applied before assembly then spot in any that gets damaged after its assembled but they use zero corrosion protection beforehand. i've never understood. i mean, sure...its all about the money but jesus, it's also about lives.maybe do it right the first time so it doesn't only have a lifespan of 50 years.

The bridge girders are made of weathering steel. This type of steel develops a surface layer of rust that actually serves as a protective layer.
