I got the impression from Steve Job’s eldest daughter Lisa Brennan Job’s memoir _Small Fry_ that he bought the mansion to humiliate and rub salt in the wound of his baby’s mama. For those not caught up on the back story, when Steve’s girlfriend since high school Chrisann Brennan told him she was pregnant, he told her that the baby wasn’t his and walked out on her. He didn’t even have the courtesy to actually break up with Chrisann, he just avoided and ghosted her which was awkward since they lived in the same house and she also worked at Apple. After some years she sued him to pay child support. The court ordered a paternity test which proved he was the father. But he was so deep in his denial and delusion he even told Time Magazine the tiny margin of error means millions of men could be the father and the backlash from the interview likely dropped Apple’s value and dissuaded Time from naming him Man of the Year. As a billionaire he paid the bare minimum required by the State of California for child support. After a while he finally manned up to have some involvement in Lisa’s life. So he invited Chrisann and Lisa over to tour his new palatial estate. Lil Lisa was blown away and marveled by rooms many times bigger than any home she lived in and a massive pipe organ with pipes big enough for her to fit into. All this time he just nitpicked and moaned how this historical home he just bought for millions was $#!+, ugly, and built poorly announced he was going to tear it all down. He did this knowing that Chrisann and Lisa were living as renters in a tiny condo and dependent on welfare. Then on the way back he told them he was generously raising the child support…by a minuscule amount. If you think I was reading too much into that action and overstating how terrible he was, Lisa told another story in the same book. Some years later Steve and Chrisann were on better terms and he was active in Lisa’s life, acting as an actual dad. He was regularly going on trips with the two of them and getting along (So well that Lisa thought they might fulfill her lifelong fantasy of them getting back together). Chrisann was still renting and there was a home in her neighborhood that she described as her dream home and shared how she would make use of it for her and Lisa. Steve’s sister Mona Simpson (who was also his most trusted confidant who served as his conscience and voice of reason) tried to convince him to surprise Chrisann and Lisa with something they’d cherish and make use of together by buying the house for them. And he _did_ buy the Dream Home…for himself and his new wife.
