Billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates Ray Dalio describes the three things he looks for in a candidate, and why he doesn’t prioritize people’s skills when hiring. He sought to establish an idea meritocracy with radical transparency, where subordinates are encouraged to question his ideas and decisions. This culture challenges employees and supervisors, but also creates a lot of turnover within the organization. Dalio’s longtime friend and co-CIO Bob Prince says that people who value personal improvement, respond well to feedback. Plus, Dalio explains how Bridgewater’s baseball card system fits employees to specific jobs.

insulting someone to their face is the only thing i ever got in trouble for. trash talking behind someones back is always safe. i doubt ray dalio can control this dynamic.

In large business, you rarely have access to the help you need in a crisis.

I once went through the interview process at Bridgewater to become a CTO. It was a fascinating position and I got as far as interviewing with a couple C-level execs at their offices in Connecticut. However that corp culture was a bit of a turnoff for me. I get the concept of radical transparency but there is this thing called tact that was glaringly missing over there. Being told that your way of thinking is "sub optimal" (You hear that phrase a lot) can be very jarring. Honestly, I came off with the impression that it was a much more toxic environment than Dalio would lead you to believe. I was offered the position but I ended up turning it down. I just wasn't willing to relocate from Texas to Connecticut. Even if I didn't have to relocate, I probably would have not taken the position.

I’ve read perhaps from his book he doesn’t want to pay for employees dental cause he feels dental should be covered by employees- that doesn’t sounds like taking care of employees or your Navy seals (the reference he keeps giving)

forced transparency is not real transparency, his idea of "3 strikes and you are out" thing is really subjective and hard to define as what is "talking behind someone else's back".
