"[A]s an American, I feel it. I feel the fading of our luster, the fading of our vision statement as a nation." In part three of Bill's series of conversations with Neil deGrasse Tyson, the astrophysicist talks about about why science literacy is critical to the future of our democracy, economy and standing in the world.

"If you're science illiterate you're disenfranchising yourself from the democratic process." Neil deGrasse Tyson “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” "The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom." Isaac Asimov

Even though all the American media, of all sorts, I consume, suggest that these polls could be in the right ballpark. I somehow find the notion to be to ludicrous and scary, to believe in the numbers. I'm Danish. From what I see around me, and from Danish media, I'd assume that the number of people in my country, that completely disregard evolution, is below 1%, and probably even far below. So acknowledging that our biggest ally, and one of the "strongest" countries in the world. Has such a big portion of its population being science illiterate, really is hard getting your head around. In my mind, this trend starts in the differences of our education system. So if the US is to keep their world dominance, and not fall apart by internal bickering. This is an important place, for progressive reforms. Looking at countries, where education actually work, while still being cheap.

It always annoys me when politics is discussed without mentioning corruption. There are very few political issues that are a moneyless dispute, where people have real differences and they're difficult to solve in a democracy. All the big issues being discussed in the media are impossible to solve without corruption. As simple as that.

***** How about the fact that oil companies have bought so many of our politicans and because of that corruption a very large of the population our country is being sold pseudoscience that Humans aren't causing global warming. Political Corruption is affecting our scientific literacy.

opensecrets tend to document those donations very nicely, many articles have been written on the matter. My point is more like so: If politicians aren't spending so much time & energy on raising funds (Democratic members of Congress spend about 4 hours a day fundraising on the phone), they'll spend more times trying to solve the issues, as well as doing them in an unbiased way. When you strip away the need to raise funds, politicians could get elected by taking on the powers that be, instead of having populist messages that get nowhere, while using small social issues as wedges to win elections.

"The major breakthroughs are behind us" my dad who was largely a literalist catholic (not fundamentalist though), said something almost exactly like this. He thought the computer was the apex of technology then after his death, smart phones became a big thing. Streaming on demand high speed internet exploded. There is always another mountain to climb.

A closing thought on global warming: Half a century ago students learned about the solar cycle (sunspots) and its correlation with global average temperatures and yet the wisdom that then-said there's a two-hundred year cycle, is missing from todays' discussions-so, who proved which, wrong...?

24:20 "God help us"......now i know he meant it as a phrase that is used when all hopes are lost. but not the most suitable phrase when Neil just talked about the devastation of putting god on things that we currently can't solve.

mr. moyers, until all of the people in the world can use the current level of knowledge we already have and use all of the channeled energy we are inhibited from harnessing due to corporations not realizing ALL of their stranded resources in coal and oil, we are on hold. shackled to their mistakes. when our government again begins to represent us and our values we will stay under the influence of the rich.

The Bill Gates reference was very, very poor. Bill Gates was very good at appropriating other people's ideas, I'd give him that. If you want a true academic rebel who at the same time did contribute *massively* in computing, read about Dennis Ritchie - creator of the C programming language and co-creator of the Unix operating system. Though he successfully defended his PhD thesis, he never officially received a degree because he didn't bother submitting a bound copy of the dissertation, as was the requirement.
