Lifelong Twins fan...as happy as I was, I felt bad that Atlanta had to lose...both teams were incredible over the course of those 7 games.

It was good no doubt, but that stupid dome takes away a lot of the “greatness” of it. The ‘97, ‘01, ‘14, ‘16 were outstanding as well. Of course the best World Series was, the 2004 ALCS.

"The greatest World Series of all time." I couldn't agree more. I have no loyalty to either team featured in this video but I remember watching this one when I was eight years old. And reliving this World Series through this video gives me chills. I experienced "ultimate Xanadu" just last year (2022) as an Astros fan and I still say 1991 is the greatest World Series of all time. Sure, 2022 might mean more to me personally due to my geography. But I can't sit here and deny the greatness of 1991. Even going back and studying and comparing all the World Series that have been played in history. Runners up: 2. 1986 World Series 3. 1975 World Series 1997, though not a great series to watch overall, also had a great Game 7. And so did 1960. "Of course the best World Series was, the 2004 ALCS." No. And I watched that entire series. And it was great, don't get me wrong. But hell, there are plenty of LCS alone (forget World Series) that are better. In fact, the very next year after this video was made (1992) there was an NLCS that was better than that 2004 ALCS. The 1980 NLCS (a five game series) had four games go into extra innings. Including the decisive Game 5. Just an absolute dramatic gut-wrenching series with seesaw lead changes left and right. Wiki: "The 1980 National League Championship Series is remembered as the closest, most grueling playoff series in Major League Baseball history. The series went to its five-game limit, with the final four games requiring extra innings to determine a winner." It's amazing how little people know about that series or remember it. And yet, I'd still give the nod to the 1991 World Series over the 1980 NLCS (as great as it was). 2004 ALCS had great moments of drama. It was certainly epic. Most impressive comeback? Certainly! But 'laugher' games (particularly in the final game) are not my idea of "greatness" when grading a series. I don't mind Atlanta winning one 'laugher' game here in this World Series because the rest of the games were nail-bitingly close. Also, who cares if it was played in a dome? It was riveting baseball, regardless. I'm glad we've moved away from artificial surfaces and all but I don't understand docking a series based on that criteria. But to each his own, I guess.

As a Reds fan I'm surprised you don't believe 1975 to be the best one ever. 75 and 91 I think are very close.

Tawnku Imi-Uru I wonder whether later in his career, Cox would have stayed with Smoltz as long as Kelly stayed with Morris. Because Smoltz truly matched Morris pitch for pitch in that Game 7, the difference was that Smoltz was taken out when he got into the same jam that Morris had just pitched out of.

It is quite unfortunate though that despite the Braves’ division and playoff dominance, they only managed to win 1 title (out of 5 appearances, 1995) albeit in a strike shortened season.

@@jayNicks10 Um, the strike cut off the 1994 season yes, but it carried over into 1995. The season didn't begin until April 2, 1995. Both the Braves (90-54) and Indians (100-54) only played a combined 144 games instead of the usual 162.

Kirby was my idol growing up. I was 8 years old, staying up with my mom watching those games. I don't know how i got to sleep to go to school the next morning after watching game six.

Clarence Parker III I think the backdrop of 9/11 added a tremendous layer of emotional depth to the 01 WS that may factor into some people's opinions of this debate...including my own. For a while I had the 01 WS as the greatest ever. But the truth is games 1 and 6 were VERY lopsided and game 2 while close for 7 innings before Matt Williams hit a 3 run HR off Pettitte, wasn't quite a classic either. Randy Johnson would have won 1-0 even without that shot. So I think the idea is that the 91 WS was more closely contested through all 7 games than 01. And games 3 and 4 from 91 closely mirror games 4 and 5 from 01. The team that ultimately lost the series winning 2 dramatic walk offs in a row to get them back in it and help make them likely to win the series before going back on the road where they would ultimately lose in heartbreaking fashion in game 7.

The 1975 World Series ranks right up there too.

Great series, but it is kind of crap when neither team can win on the others home field. 2001 would fall into that category as well.

First pitch too. Some say Glavine went back out to the mound upset that his offense failed to take the lead in the top of the 8th and his emotions got the best of him there.

The 8th inning could’ve been worse for Glavine as he gave up another hit and balked. But he quickly settled back down and retired the rest. Once again his offense didn’t help him. Though you gotta give credit to Tapani and Aguilera.

Love the enthusiasm of this comment. Btw one question. You mentioned the 82 World Cup. Was that referring to the Final? The entire tournament? I'm a little hazy on that one so that was the only sporting even that did not evoke a distinctive image in my head, which made me curious.

This is why Braves fans are among the best fans in all of sports. I grew up in Minnesota. Yes, my team won the Series...but...I actually felt strange after game 7. This series had every serious Twins fan EXHAUSTED at the end. There were no nerves left. We were spent. I distinctly remember thinking if there was a way to declare both teams victorious..it should be done. I was blown away by how the Braves fought for every single play. What was equally as impressive was the class of Braves fans. True baseball fans. I was so impressed..that I instantly made the Braves "My National League Team". You want to see the quality of Braves fans? Go watch Randy Johnsons perfect game he threw for Arizona in Atlanta. Standing ovation from the home fans for the away Johnson. Cheering for Johnson all through the 9th. If ever we can go back and award a two winner World Series to the Twins and Braves...sign me up.

The Twins normally celebrate anything with a losing record since the Pohlad sons own the team but are only in it for profit. Since King Carl died, the team has spiraled down from at least being competitive in the division to simply being a source of immense profit for the Pohlad sons. Winning is not a meaningful consideration.

2016 wasn't a good year for the Twins

I was not yet a baseball fan (I think I was 8) when this series happened but I feel like there are a lot of similarities between this and the 2001 World Series. The home team won all 7 games, there were back to back games in the middle of the series where the team trailing 2-0 won incredibly dramatic, epic games that created the feeling that they were a team of destiny en route to going up 3-2, however that team was in for a rude awakening when going back on the road for games 6 and 7 where the series ended in dramatic, walk off fashion and everyone believes the team that lost game 7 had an absolutely golden opportunity and should have won. Both series threw the absolute kitchen sink at baseball fans. Perhaps the main difference in the series was Arizona really dominating games 1, 2 and 6. The 91 series only had 1 game where one team really put some distance between them and their opponents like that, which was game 5. But I think other than that, and all the raw, post-9/11 emotions being spilled into the 2001 series and the unique double worst-to-first storyline draped over the '91 series, they are remarkably similar.

billny33 If it was a foul tip it was the correct call because the ball did hit the dirt. If it was a swing & miss, it should have been Pendleton out because Lonnie Smith was on 1st with nobody out so the Uncaught 3rd Strike rule would not apply in that situation.

Yeah, what I meant was, it's almost impossible for anyone to tell whether or not Pendleton made contact with the ball, even with all those slo-mo replays. If I can't tell what the right call was, I can't tell the umpire that he got it wrong.

That's one of the toughest for me to decide. I am torn, I could see it either way. It's like I can't see definite proof that Hrbek deliberately pulled him off the bag, but it sure looks very suspicious. Maybe he did a good job of making it look like an accident. If they had replay for this call I think it would have taken forever lol.

billny33 He capitalized on the situation. If Gant comes in clean theres nothing Hrbek can do. But Gant came in a little hard and Kent capitalized, especially at the end. Trust me, we know Herbie around here. The guy was a lot of things. Easy to knock back isn't one of them. Think if Hrbek had wanted so hold that spot on the bag, like waiting for a close throw. Gant would have bounced off him.

webstedge1099 i was born in 1983 but did not become a baseball fan until 1994. I missed out on this and Toronto beating Atlanta and Joe Carter's HR in 93, but I still enjoyed learning about it as history even if its not as great as seeing it live. Every fan will get their collection of moments.

I was born in September of '92 and I like to think of 1991 as my conception year (it wasn't until that week between Christmas and New Year's) and I was 2 when the strike cancelled the '94 series. I am hoping that in the future we will get another World Series that can be right up there with, or maybe even top 1991 as one of the best WS ever. What I did see live was when the Diamondbacks stopped the Yankees from winning 4 in a row and spoiled their 9/11 tribute playoff run. That one will have a special place in my heart as one of my worst sports-watching moments. I think Mariano singlehandedly cost NY the championship (although the Snakes did win 3 games by a combined 28-3 and just like 87 and 1991, 2001 had home teams go 7-0.) I also saw when Matt Harvey almost pitched a CG shutout only to completely fall apart at the end. I lived through, but didn't watch on TV, when both Sox teams ended a combined 174-year title drought by sweeping two WS in a row, and when the Yankees celebrated a championship in their first year of their new stadium.

How bizarre is it that the general public just shrugged their shoulders and said "meh" at a title for the long starving White Sox franchise?

I really can't speak about the 2005 White Sox, I like how their series with the Astros was one of the closer ones where it just went the same way 4 times in a row. 2004 wasn't really that bad in hindsight, as Boston rode an unlikely 8-game win streak straight to the Promised Land before the Yankees and Cardinals knew what was going on, making for a great storyline. But I still cannot look at pictures of the Arizona players dancing on the field. What's crazy is that Arizona (never mind the fact that they literally came out of nowhere to win the championship and have done next to nothing since) wound end up being the first in a string of 6 different champions in 6 years, and 7 different teams in 8 years. About having the little kid singing the national anthem, I wish something like that would happen again. It also happened in 1996 when an 8-year old sang the anthem in game 6 at yankee stadium.

webstedge1099 the Red Sox beating the Yanks in 04 crushed me too but it was great for the game I must admit. Their Series win vs St Louis to me was basically an epilogue and nothing more. Game 1 was entertaining but after that it was a very boring World Series other than the fact that the curse was broken. 05 was very exciting all 4 games. I also think the 2011 WS game 6 is about as epic as 1986 WS game 6 and I'm glad I got to witness such an unbelievable death defying comeback. 2016 WS game 7 I think is also something no one will ever forget, the longest cursebreaker of them all. Are you a Yankee fan or did you just get behind them extra strong that year after 9/11? I actually got over that loss by watching the tape of that 9th over and over and over until I was numb to it. Not easy but I think it was the only way. A lot of painful imagery in that postgame celebration from a Yankee standpoint.

I never got why the Twins were considered underdogs against Toronto. Twins went 95-67, Toronto went 91-71. Twins had +124 run differential, Toronto +62. Twins scored almost 100 more runs than the Jays and gave up fewer. I'm not sure about the Jays but I know Minnesota had 7 players from the 87 team on their 91 team.

@@krog21 yeah. Pretty uncommon for the team with the best record in the American League to be underdogs. I think it was partly because the Blue Jays went 8-4 against the Twins during the regular season that year. But much like to why did to the Tigers in 1987, a team that also went 8-4 against the Twins that year, The Twins beat the Blue Jays in just 5 games.

Not entirely true. Correct for World Series games but LCS and Division Series the Twins lost home games and won road games like normal teams. Still remarkable how that played out though.

Along a similar line, I would love to see MLB force Tampa to play in a suitable venue and force the NY Yankees to move the entirety of the right field and right-center stands to adult-sized specifications. Team of the EARLY 90s. The Yanks, as we know, owned the mid 90s. I'd say San Francisco was the team of the 10s (well 1st half, similar to the Braves of the 90s) but not really sure who the team of the 2000's were. A lot of teams had good 2-3 year runs. Maybe Boston?

As much as I disliked McCarver as a commentator, I'll actually defend him on this one... Even though he said "Braves", I think he actually meant Atlanta, since this was the first time the Braves made the World Series since they moved there.

I would also argue that the 10 shutout innings were more gutsy than dominant. He had a lot of tough innings in that game that he somehow found a way through. I expected a 10-inning 1-0 game to have a quick pace with a lot of 1-2-3 innings, a lot of strikeouts, and it really wasn't like that when I watched the whole game.
