In 2019 I flew to Seattle to chill with my cousin and his family. He's in this hip little neighborhood called West Seattle, which has a ton of cool shops, bars, restaurants, and an old school theater called The Admiral. One night, we walked to The Admiral to catch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. As the previews were stating, a guy walked in, waving his hands to get the attention of two women behind us. I tapped my cousin on the shoulder and said "dude, that's Eddie Vedder." My cuz looks up, and said "holy shit, that's Eddie Vedder." I Googled his wife, and sure enough, she was one of the gals behind us. As the movie ended, we went to the lobby and saw them. We were heading to the exit, and I was next in line behind him. He was holding the door open for me, and as I was going to attempt to speak with him, I noticed two elderly women behind me. I couldn't in good conscience not hold the door for them, so I thanked him for holding the door and told him I got it. He noticed that I was holding the door for the women, looked me dead in my face, and said "good for you, man." Getting recognition for holding the door from him was equally as cool as actually talking with him. He walked off with the women, and that was that. As a now 42 year old growing up in Houston, it was almost like seeing Bugs Bunny in real life. Was a cool moment.

A few years back I went to a local shop to get a new fin for my surfboard. Place was empty, just me and my wife. I'm sitting there waiting for the shop guy to get my fin and the door opens up and some guy with his kid walk in and start looking at the boards rack in front of me. I don't pay them much attention, just keeping my nose in my phone, browsing. Then I see out of my peripheral that the guy was moving closer to me, so I glance up... and it's Eddie. After my brain de-fizzles enough I work up enough gumption to say, "Eddie?" He looks over and says "Yeah?" I got up and walked up to him... he put his hand out and I shook it. We chatted for about 2-3 minutes. Feeling like I had taken enough of his time, I ask if he'd mind taking a selfie, He says "sure." I snap a couple and thank him and sat back down on the bench to wait for my fin. He walked out of the room a few moments later. I got back on my phone to text my wife about what just happened, and midtext I hear a little voice, "Excuse me..." I look up and it was his daughter. She was maybe 10 or 11 at the time.. and she goes "Dad said to give you this." and hands me one of his picks. I've been a life-long fan of his and the band... and was already beside myself getting to chat with him as long as I did. Him sending over the pick was such a thoughtful and genuinely cool gesture. They say don't meet your heroes... but sometimes, it works out pretty great when you do.

Much gratitude to Vedder and Ament for providing time and for their openness. Mr. Simmons, thank you as well. I'm 56, been to every PJ tour since 1995, and thoroughly enjoyed the open conversation. This is one of the first times that I've seen someone address the authenticity vide which was a necessity in the 1990's. Also, I do miss the pre-social media days. If a person wanted to insult, disparage, or criticize another, it was done face-to-face, or vocally. Consideration for fellow human beings is lost in today's world because of Social Media.

I couldn't agree more. I struggled through it. There are so few PJ interviews these days. Broken Record did a great one and so too Apple Music. I commented by myself already about the missing opportunity to talk about the inclusion of Present Tense in The Last Dance, but just now I came across the thing with the setlists. What a cool thing from Bill to mention that and just when Eddie was talking about it and was seemingly ready to dive in deeper into the process of creating setlists Bill throws that chance away and goes over to Jeff asking him about his connection to sports. How tone deaf can an interviewer be.

It was s was in 2010, i just saw stone in the alley next to the tour bus before the show...and i was basically spewing as fan how much i love him and ..pearl jam.... and how it was an honor to meet him..... and then he thanked me..... he said thanks for coming to the show tonight. My girlfriend took a pic of us.......and then he said , i'll see you inside. It was such an intimate cool show. Stone hung out afterwards and took pics with some people, but what I noticed and felt was that Stone was so normal..... chill and not "rock star"......... that was the coolest thing to me. The interviewer seems obsessed with the 90’s, he keps repeating stuff like ”it’s been more than 30 years now”, or says “now that you’re older” it seems kind of disrespectful. It’s like the only thing that defines them is this huge success they had in the beginning? Like, why not ask a question about all they’ve done between 98-2020? He asks about each album but STOPS at yield (1998) because he feels the need to explain to Eddie and Jeff that all bands peaks after six years. Dude, the band has released more albums after yield, than before it. He did the same thing in the last interview too. I would be so annoyed. PJ are so restrictive with interviews, why did they pick this guy? Is it because he knows a lot about sports? I don’t get it…

Was surfing Doheny State Beach at Dana point in 2016, and I heard (while paddling) soundcheck rehearsal of a weird "Shine on you crazy diamond" version with a tribal kind of drumming! Focused further, was Eddie rehearsing with Jack Irons! Didn't then know about the event (flew 1/2 way around the world to SoCal).

Thoughts: 1. Yield is my longtime favorite PJ album. Nice to hear the props from Jeff 2. Sorry to hear their Super Bowl answer but get it. I’d had a fantasy of a PJ Foo Fighters joint show 3. Fascinating to hear them talk about Taylor Swift, and her rarefied position. Especially from their perspective having been massive at one time. 4. Love the sports discussion. Real fans. 5. They’re both charming and thoroughly enjoyed this

I’m with you, it was extremely awkward at times. Honestly it was Eddie’s fault he just would not engage with bill’s questions. They have been interviewed by bill multiple times before and bill interviewed the way he always does so I don’t blame him. Eddie just flat out refused to answer most of his questions and acted like they were all stupid lol. He’s just up his own ass honestly, and I say that as a huge Pearl Jam fan. Jeff was totally affable and relaxed and cool and Eddie sitting there acting insulted that bill asked him for one word reaction to each album? What the fuck is wrong with that question Eddie? Lol

Listening to Eddie comfirms for me that you don't have to agree with someone's politics to admire them. I agree with some of his views, but far from all. That doesn't mean I don't respect the man. I remember a time when folks could be on different sides of the political spectrum and still have respect for eachother. Still be friends.. Our Politics shouldn't define us, or devide us as deeply as they do today. We need to think deeper than that, because ultimatly as humans we ARE more than that. There's much more to us than our political leanings. Try asking someone you know who leans in a different politcal direction, how they're doing on a personal level. We all have more in common then we're condontioned to believe. I guess I'm just exhausted by all of the division and wish things were not like this. Maybe we're all too condtioned. Too bought in, to even attempt to find common ground in all the madness. All I can say for sure is, none of this politcal shit is good for mental health, and its imortant to not let it consume us completely. But perhaps its too late. I hope not.
