Cobhams speed and power is outrageous

As a fellow drummer, I swear this is the best live "duo" drumming I have ever seen in my entire life. They aren't just playing drums together, they are connected at the hip & making love together with music. It's absolutely beautiful to behold.

These two legends playing off each other so nicely: Cobham sight reading and kicking butt, Bellson swingin in a v neck sweater.

Unbelievable. I had the pleasure of meeting Louie in 1993 and standing 2 feet behind him while he was rehearsing with the San Diego Mesa College Jazz band for a concert. His economy of movement, power, feel, and ability to kick a big band in the ass was incredible. Pretty respectable for him to do a duet with Billy Cobham at the height of HIS power. Thanks for posting.

I saw Billy Cobham, "in clinic," early 1980's, sponsored by Tama and Nalli's Music Annex, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He played a closed roll, standing in front of a single snare drum, and his sticks were coming up, off of the head of the snare drum, at least 18", as if he were playing an "open" roll. I still marvel at the memory of seeing that, to this DAY... lol

Fantastic duel between two fab drummers here and I am only 7 mins in so far! Louie seems more inventive whereas Billy seems to repeat himself quite a bit. Great intensive playing and also involving the band in this.

From 2:24 to 2:40 intresting later became boring Cobham starting to be agressive
@TheEleatic6 жыл бұрын
I think Bellson sounds far more musical in this context. Cobham is just too aggressive and LOUD. Where are the soft touches?

Ok, I'm 64 years old and the first time I heard Louie Bellson was on an album called A Pearl For Louie when I was studying drums with Sam Ulano. Fast forward to 1971 and I heard Mahavishnu ( I started playing guitar in '68 ) and the first thing I said to myself was this drummer sounds like Louie Bellson. I am so happy to see this for the first time after all these years!

I'm guessing this was done in Europe and I, for one, am happy for the absence of whoops and hollers and applause interruppting this great performance, as would have happened had it been done in the States.

I see Dean Brown on guitar. So this is probably from the early 80's. IMO, the best band Cobham ever played with after Mahavishnu. It was Dean Brown (g), Tim Landers (b), Gil Goldstein (K).

Nice to see just what can be done WITHOUT the traditional jazz grip. Cobhams hands and FEET are just so incredibly fast. So you won't see the incredible stick technique off the snare like with Bellson but with Cobham incredible natural speed, he really doesn't need it; he's not traditional jazz anyway- and each of those 2 clearly enjoyed watching and listening as the other played. Great mutual respect, there.

Its a choice, Cobham master the jazz grip in both hands, righty or lefty.. In horace silver in 60's he played jazz grip

Louie has much better hand control and seldom hits a stick or misses a beat while Cobham's single stroke assault attack style is more like Animal from the Muppets.

I love Billy. Met him once and gave him a present. It actually was for me but since I had a chance to meet him I gave it to him. He’s an awsome drummer. Not the warmest guy I have ever met but great at drums. Anyway Buddy Rich will always be the best to me. His crossover,both overhand and underhand was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen any drummer do. And it was for a reason. Not just hey look at this. Possibly his martial arts helped with that but he gets me everytime. Not just that. His way of getting tone out of each kit and drum as well as cymbals. This is fantastic but I think or Buddy everytime I see an awsome drummer! Just got to me that much! Billy played the style I’d listened to more as far as music. Buddy though. Man. The Legend for a reason!
