Doug introduces Ed to some jazz fusion with Billy Cobham, drummer for the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Does it rock? Or is it too jazzy?

Billy is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Seeing him with Mahavishnu Orchestra is otherworldly - he was pioneering a style of drumming at that time which people are still trying to figure out today. I enjoyed hearing what you guys thought about this. Appreciated the honesty in your thoughts as well. I tend to share many of Ed's same feelings about jazz.

a little background on he Spectrum album. It was done in lterally 2 days, no rehearsals, and the album is basically 1st and 2nd takes.

This really does groove big time. With some fine solos. Funky.

I like the original with Tommy Bolin on guitar, Leland Sklar on bass, Jan Hammer on keys. 2nd to this live is Jeff Beck, with most any of his bands. :D

WOW...a reaction to the great master Bill Cobham!!! He's such a cool easy goin' guy not to mention a complete monster on drums, met him at NAMM one year and saw him many times in San Diego. Looks like Sa Davis on percussion as well. This live version sounds a little fast but will always be an awesome tune. A really good tune to check out would be Unknown Jeromes off of Warning, an awesome bass break in the middle!

I was in my late teens. RTF, Weather report, Hammer,Ponty, etc. were what we (peers) were listening to. But I also like folk as much. So I know what I like ...and what I don't like.

Hey Ed, no problem musically with Blues Traveler, however I sometines find Mr. Poppers vocal and harmonica mannerisms a bit hard to take. Also really enjoyed their second album back in the day, especially that great organ and vocal collaboration, Mountain Cry, with G. Allman. And one slight correction from my previous comment, as I actually meant to type harmonica vest!

The real shame of it all is a video of this albums players making this album or much less afterwards playing it all together doesn't exist and for that blunder we all must stand in awe of the players as they played on the album. What I would give to have a raw video to match that playing !

It's really interesting...I just came from watching Matteo Mancuso and co. playing The Chicken and Matteo's playing makes this guy's playing seem hopelessly limited. He plays more like how I'd play -- minor pentatonic and Dorian riffs -- as opposed to Matteo Mancuso, who plays without any limits. Not that I didn't dig this but it's like night and day guitar wise (and I LOVE Billy Cobham).

First comment back after a near three month, cruel C19 enforced Wi-Fi free zone purgatory kinda lifestyle. Gotta admit, always nice to see and hear the Powerful Percussive Prowess (holy sweet alliteration, Batman!!) of Sir William Cobham, but as competent as Not River Phoenix is on this live version, he simply cannot hold a candle to the wonderful performance by Tommy Bolin on the original studio version, let alone the scintillating studio bassline by Leland Sklar, he of that now very infamous Merlinesque beard... P.S., despite being a clever commentary tie-in, that brief excerpt of Blues Traveler was really not appreciated. Now I'm off to see a man about securing myself a harmonica rack, so thanks for the inadvertent reminder!!

(This is Ed) Not a Blues Traveler fan, Avery? I like them and thought that clip fit in a funny way. To each his own! 🤟

Billy Cobham is an excellent choice. A superstar of jazz/fusion for sure. But I just looked at who you review and do not see one Brand X or Genesis. What gives? If you like great drumming.....

Do you both already know the greatness that is Tool? Have you come to appreciate the artistry of Maynard James Keenan? How about a back catalogue spanning 30 years of a mans life who’s struggled with understandings of his own, and being able to watch his evolution through his art. The Tool Army will swarm your channel soon after, with a wealth of information, perspectives.... so much....
