In Australia, when I was a lad, I worked underground with Scottish miners, most of them originated in some place called “ the Gorbals” fearsome men, fearsome drunks, fearsome fighters, nicest blokes you would ever want to work with, lend them money and they chased you to repay it, give them a helping hand and they would repay it tenfold if you didn’t stop them.

Fast forward 5 years from your post and Billy will be frowned upon as he is funny as hell (and the best ever) and that today (2022) having a sense of humour or being a comedian will get you cancelled as some nitwit will be offended by a joke.

One of his best stories. He was great in the old days when he was still drinking and had the stories to go with it. No criticism of him giving up the booze.
@irbennett24 күн бұрын
If he hadn't given up drinking, he would be dead, and we wouldn't be having this conversation. And as abundantly became clear he didn't need to drink to be funny.
@paulbradford824022 күн бұрын
@@irbennett I'm not denying that his health, or anybody's health for that matter can benefit from not drinking. However, I still think he was funnier then. Obviously that's a matter of opinion. His stories were often from his experiences. Many of his stories were drink related and as such were very funny. I think and again it's my opinion, that he isn't as funny as he was. I refer you to my last line, 'No criticism of him giving up the booze'

I guy I know said he first saw this many years ago in a cinema(?) in Norway, with Norwegian subtitles. All was fine until it got to the punchline. The Norwegians read the subtitles a second or so before Billy said, and they laughed so loud he never heard the punchline himself. I loved his earlier stuff. He seemed to mellow after the 80s, and was never quite the same. His meandering storytelling style was unique, and the way he pull true stories into the mix made him without doubt the best comedian of his generation.
@irbennett24 күн бұрын
That's rubbish. In fact he would become angrier after the 80s. If you'd seen him live during this period you would know this. He was funnier as well..

Normally i don't like bad language but in the case of Billy Connoly he is pure genius and it just doesn't bother me. I laugh right through all the bad words. He's absolutely right about diced carrots and tomato peel,the first time I got drunk (1 pint of lager), was in a pub in Aberdeen at the back of Woolworths on Aberdeen green I remember spewing up against the toilet door, every time I went back to the pub The hinges of the door to the toilet still had bits of carrot and tomato peel stuck in the hinges, just showed you they never cleaned the bloody place properly, and I never had any diced carrots or tomatoes for weeks previous to that so Billy is spot-on.
