I've seen alot of people in the comments debating if this was an original design by Billy or a Zero skateboards shirt. Although I don't have any definitive concrete proof I do know this, Billy started wearing this shirt in 1995 (Bullet With Butterfly Wings video, Mellon Collie CD booklet, Reading Festival in August), and according to every site I found regarding zero skateboards, the company wasn't founded until 1996, one year later.
@thomasbaines5853 жыл бұрын
Zero was a clothing company created by Jamie Thomas before Zero skateboards were around. There was even an advertisement for Zero in a Toy Machine video before JT left and started making boards under the Zero brand. I’m not 100% sure if his shirt is by Jamie Thomas’ Zero although I was always under the impression it was due to the design and colour. Zero skateboards starting after he wore the shirt is irrelevant because there was a clothing company called zero being started by the same people who went on to do boards at that time.
@obscuredsatellitesinflight60343 жыл бұрын
@@thomasbaines585 Like I said, I don't have any concrete proof one way or another, but I can not find anything on google that suggests the Jamie Thomas Zero brand pre-dates 1996. If you could link me to a video or a website that shows the Zero Clothing brand was around pre-1995 I'll happily take that into consideration. I'm always open to new information.
@thomasbaines5853 жыл бұрын
My only point was that Zero Skateboards was not the start of the Zero brand. The design/font and use of a star is that of the skateboard company Zero. It’s been a minute since I saw it but I think JT talks about it in a podcast called “The 9 Club”
@obscuredsatellitesinflight60343 жыл бұрын
@@thomasbaines585 I tried searching "Jamie Thomas Zero Clothing" and all the results were still pointing to 1996. From what I can tell, the clothing company WAS around before the skateboard company, but it was still in 1996. "In 1995, Jamie joined Toy Machine, a small skateboarding company. During his time with them, he attempted the dangerous "Leap of Faith" at Point Loma High School in San Diego. It is from this jump that the Leap of Faith gap in School II of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 originated. In 1996, Thomas opened up a small clothing company which would later become Zero Skateboards." If you or anyone could post a timestamp in that "The Nine Club" interview where Jamie mentions the origin of Zero Clothing/Skateboards it would be much appreciated.
@thomasbaines5853 жыл бұрын
m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nslldM-DubqyqGQ.html It’s a 3 1/2 hour podcast so I can’t timestamp. Hopefully that will contain some information a google search can’t deliver. Even if it’s not got any definitive proof (honestly don’t remember exactly what was said) it should go in more detail of Zero’s origins or at the very least entertain.

Corgan's a hardworking genius but also a musical auteur who's notoriously unsentimental towards his bandmates and childishly petty when other people attempt to collaborate with him. He recorded every string track on Siamese Dream himself because he didn't think James and D'arcy were taking it seriously enough, and "I could do their parts better and faster anyway". The only reason it wasn't a solo album in all but name was because Billy didn't know how to play drums, so instead he just browbeat Jimmy constantly and made him do hundreds of takes until his hands bled. For the entire life of the band Billy was constantly mad and disappointed in the other 3 Pumpkins, and he'd say so publicly when anybody asked in an interview. His relationship with D'arcy and Jimmy was especially bad, and it did neither of them any good at all to have Angry Dad Billy constantly reminding them they weren't measuring up. Lots of bands have domineering lead singers but I'm amazed neither of them quit the band after Siamese Dream. The money must have been astonishingly good.

For the record, I was around in the 1990's. Billy dropped Bullet With Butterfly Wings music video wearing the Zero shirt. @@silverfck Ha, yeah, I just assumed he shaved his head to kind of 'stop' the pretty boy association, so it wouldn't override the music. God knows, or maybe he was just moving with the times; when that kind of 'the Matrix/weirdo' look which was starting to happen around then (compared to the cardigan op-shop looking grunge lot) esp with the more industrial metal bands like Marilyn Manson, 9 inch nails and ministry ... and carried on with some of nu-metal bands 5 or 6 years later. Funny really coz the pumpkins album with 'rhinoceros' on it was released the same time as never-mind (nirvana), but it wasn't really a hit (I used to hear it on college radio mainly. loved it! ) unlike nirvana, pearl jam etc. Siamese dream was a different story 2 or 3 years later (massive hit). Since I first saw this picture when I was 7 years old I've always wondered wtf is he standing in front of? Solar panels or mirrors?
@obscuredsatellitesinflight60342 жыл бұрын
Apparently it was taken at a solar power plant in the Mojave Desert.

Strange that people said Billy Corgan was too unattractive. I'm not into men but he has the charisma of a massive artist. I've never once thought the guy looks ugly or anything like that, either. He's got his own style going on and he's confident with it. Sure he was losing hair and he shaved it all off but I don't think that really took anything away from his looks. Shame on the music industry for telling anyone they aren't "attractive enough" to sell records. If the music is good it's gonna sell. I'm tired of the pop music industry constantly regurgitating the same formula over and over again: an overly attractive and sexual person given beats to sing over (possibly with autotune) and music that transcends unoriginality and somehow finds a higher level of it than what we can actually perceive. It's more about looks and sexiness than the actual music to them.

I know The Smashing Pumpkins bought the rights for the shirt from the skateboard company. I've always thought he was a good looking guy, and wouldn't turn down the opportunity to be 6 foot 3

Gilbert Arenas and Russell Westbrook wore #0 in the NBA to motivate themselves to prove their detractors wrong. (RW recently changed his # after being traded to GA’s old team.)

The 90’s were all about self depreciation. The record companies tried to sell image over the music. It’s no wonder why you get Radiohead singing “But I’m a creep”, Nirvana singing “I’m so ugly”, and Beck singing “I’m a loser.”

So true. For Gen X it was better to fail than to sell out.

Sub Pop Records also sold “ LOSER” t-shirts in the ‘90s. And Nirvana had songs called “I Hate Myself And Want To Die,” “Rape Me,” “Negative Creep,” & “Dumb.” Something in the water up in Seattle that makes people loathe themselves and become deranged commies... No wonder they frequently turn to heroin. Have to admit they had the best music of any city in the ‘90s, though. Manchester would be my pick for best musical city of the ‘80s.

Or maybe they were just depressed?
@joewood10552 жыл бұрын
This is a pretty good observation about that time and how they were marketing However, i think it was a real symbol of how it felt to be a teenager anywhere Soundgarden had many songs that depicted lack of self worth as did Alice In Chains The real essence of the times were being exploited thru these bands yes. And it was cool to be depressed which itself had a consequence
