A useful tip: The polite marker 요 at the end like that of 안녕하세요 is more like "여" than "요" in reality. Other 요s are pronounced as they are written, but this polite 요 is not. As a result, "요요요. (It's yo-yo.)" is more like "요요여".

My name is Theo, where the two last vowels are pronounced the exact same way as the polite marker ("eh-yoh"). It's a bit of a chore to say 'teh-yoh eh-yoh'. Does this rule apply to my name too then? Can I instead say 'teh-yoh eh-yeoh'? (Sorry for the romanisation)

I've been learning Hangul and trying to self-learn Korean for several weeks now, and I'm finally understanding the Hangul pronunciation variations, and now thanks to this video, can introduce myself. This is so helpful! I'm also going through TTMIK Book 1 Lesson 9, and their podcast. Trying to immerse myself whenever possible, and finish the nights with some k-dramas to hear the language being spoken. It's tough to do this alone with no one else learning alongside me, but I'm determined! Thank you for putting all these resources out there for us!

For people who struggle with the vowel 으, just remember how the British pronounce, or don't pronounce certain words in speech. "I said I was going to the shop". An English person would sound like "I said I was going t' th' shop." The sound "Schwa" is used in a lot of English words. Like "Alzheimer's" doesn't sound like how an American might say it. The "Mer" in the word sounds much more like 므 than anything. So while the Vowel 으 doesn't exist in English as such. The sound is used all of the time by Native English speakers in Britain.

I know you have to spell it in Korean as it sounds and I also know about CV order, but I'm still not sure on how exactly to do it. Also do you need to add a vowel if your name ends in a consonant to keep with the CV structure or doesn't it matter?

I recommend checking Naver dictionary (or Naver.com) for finding the Korean spelling of any name you'd like to know. You can find if there are other celebrities with that name, what their Korean name is, and pick the one you'd like. Sometimes there can be multiple options for certain names.

In the example using your name, you switched politeness levels between sentences (polite 예요 to honorific (?) 습니다). I’ve seen koreans do this in k-dramas as well and I’m wondering if there’s a reason behind it
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 жыл бұрын
For this video, you don't need to stress about that much - I'm only teaching some quick phrases here so learners can get to use what they're learning right away. But a future episode in this series will teach both of those forms. The ~습니다 ending isn't honorific, but it's known as "formal" speech. You can also find other videos about this sort of speech on my channel if you're interested in getting a head start. I'll teach both formal and honorific speech in this series.

Hi, Billy. Since Americans place their surname last, how would a Korean in a professional setting (in Korea), address an American? Would it be his/her last name and title or first name and title? And, is it awkward or wrong for Americans to introduce themselves in a business setting by stating their first name and then their last name or should they flip the order? Thank you!!

Hey Billy! In your Korean Made Simple book, 입니 다 is used instead of 이 에 요, I was wondering what's the difference between the two or if for example I can just use one in place of the other in most or all situations?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 2 жыл бұрын
Check out the "Preface" of the book, before the first section. There's a small section where I talk about using this form. Also you'll learn ~이에요 (and the 요 form) later in the book. And in the back of the book you'll find all of the conversations re-written using the 요 form as well :)

When using 반갑습니다, why does the ㅂ in 습 become pronounced as a ㅁ? What sound change rule is this? Or is this one of the irregular words to be mindful of?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 жыл бұрын
That's due to sound change rules, which are explained in lesson #9 of this series. It's ㅂ + ㄴ --> ㅁ + ㄴ.

I find it confusing when to use 입니다 or 이에요 at the end when saying your name. I've been trying to follow your lessons and book at the same time. In the book you use 입니다. What is the difference?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 ай бұрын
Both are important, and both are used. This course will teach both forms too :) This is just an early episode, so you can use these expressions as-is, but in later lessons you'll learn exactly how they're different.

Hi! What if your name ends in a vowel but is silent, such as 'Nicole'. As I know my name is spelled differently in Korean because of the silent vowel would I use 이에요 or 에요 ? 감사함니다
@GoBillyKorean

You would pick whichever one depending on what letter it ends with when written in Korean, not in English.

I enjoy your videos so much! But one little thing, if I may: the second camera angle is a bit confusing, because you don't look at it and there doesn't really seem to be a reason for its existence.. Thank you so much for everything and greetings from Vienna :)

The 2nd camera angle makes it possible for me to film these videos. Otherwise I'd have to have everything memorized and film in fewer takes, which is impossible.

아니야 is not simply "no," but is the negative conjugation of 아니다 ("to not be") and means that something/someone "isn't."

Why do you sometimes pronounce 는 like [nen] (eg. when you say 저는) and other times [nun] (when you say 는 alone)?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 жыл бұрын
I'm saying it as 는 in both situations. It might have to do with whether I'm saying it in an English sentence (and therefore saying it more slowly so it's clear) or in a Korean sentence (and therefore said more quickly).

So I have a question... Would it be more "natural to just say Name + 이에요/예요 ? Like, in japanese it tends to sound unnatural to present yourself as "私はNAMEです。". Normally, you'd just say "NAMEです。" and omit "私は" since it's understood in context that you're talking about yourself when you're introducing yourself. So, is it ok to omit "저는" in Korean when introducing yourself?
@GoBillyKorean

Introductions are done differently in Korean and Japanese. I actually mention this specific usage in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZ-fhsp-xNuao4U.html
