Ray Charles made the induction speech when Billy went into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame(1999). Billy's daughter Alexa was given the middle name Ray, after Billy's musical idol Ray Charles.

As a student in university in the 1980s, having just bought my first CD player and hooking it up to my stereo, Baby Grand was the song I chose to break the cherry to the new sound system, and unlike some first-time encounters, hearing that song for the first time sent chills down my spine.

This is another Billy Joel song with a great story attached. He originally wrote Piano Man to play and sing with Ray Charles, but Ray's people just brushed him off. Years later, they met, and Billy told him about it. Ray said, next time you have a song for me, call ME; here's my number. So, he wrote this song, and the rest is music history.

Nice story but sorry, that is not really how things happened. Piano Man was very personal to Billy and basically autobiographical and he wrote it describing his time playing at a piano bar and below is how Baby Grand came about. "The collaboration came about because I named my baby daughter, Alexa Ray, after him. Ray heard about it from Quincy Jones, who is a friend of my producer, Phil Ramone, and sent word that he would love to record with me if I had the right song. I was so excited that that very night I sat down and wrote 'Baby Grand,' and polished it up the next morning". - Billy Joel

If you listen to his Live Version from Russia concert called Kohuept (Live) he does the song solo, and some of the verses you would swear Ray was singing. This was when the wall came down and he went to Russia, the people did not really know him but he got them all rocking in a short time, music is a common unifier!

Such a shame that this is not better known. Although Billy has done some wonderful songs, I'd still rate this as right at the top of the quality meter for the feel of it and the obvious shared chemistry of the two artists that just oozes out of it!

For decades, this song has made one just pause and reflect. We are all so busy. We lose focus on what matters. Have listened to this song many times over and over thru the years. It makes one realize that love, Faith, hope, and appreciation are what really matter.

Billy Joel is certainly a genius, but the voice of Ray Charles … rich, gritty and smooth all at once. Like rubbing polish into freshly sanded wood. There’s so much satisfaction in the experience.
