My husband introduced me to this song when we were dating. We danced to it at our wedding and still dance to it whenever we hear it. We are 47 years together and still going strong. OMG...My husband is taking me to see BILLY JOEL for my 65th 🎈🎂 which is tomorrow and the concert is Sunday. I am beyond excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sept 2023

My son has Cerebral Palsy and is 17 now. He can't walk talk or eat, but I couldn't love him any more than I do. When this song came on one day when we were together, it summed it up perfectly. "I don't need clever conversation. I just need someone I can talk to". This is my song to my son Fischer. Its our song

cindy86 - I can't say I hate today's youth music, cindy... I will admit I don't really listen to the music of today... I find myself very lost in the music of my own youth... but I do know that today's youth music will be as important to today's youth in 30 years as music like this is to me now... one day you'll understand, and I hope you won't be as judgmental then as you seem to be now.

Don't go changing to try and please me You never let me down before, mmm Don't imagine you're too familiar And I don't see you anymore I would not leave you in times of trouble We never could have come this far, mmm I took the good times, I'll take the bad times I'll take you just the way you are Don't go trying some new fashion Don't change the color of your hair, mmm You always have my unspoken passion Although I might not seem to care I don't want clever conversation I never want to work that hard, mmm I just want someone that I can talk to I want you just the way you are I need to know that you will always be The same old someone that I knew Oh, but what will it take till you believe in me The way that I believe in you? I said I love you, that's forever And this I promise from the heart, mmm I couldn't love you any better I love you just the way you are, right I don't want clever conversation I never want to work that hard, mmm I just want someone that I can talk to I want you just the way you are

Hola.

Sometimes you just put Conspiracies “on the shelf” until there is absolute proof one way or another, especially if they don’t matter. Some of us were alive through the entire Beatles era, so there is that.

This was the song that really made him a big star. It was a big radio hit in 1977 and '78. Although he had already recorded 3 albums on Columbia Records, he hadn't achieved commercial success until "The Stranger" album. Don't underestimate the contribution of the great Phil Woods on alto sax to help make this such a great classic.

By the time he's singing this to her, she's already gone. This is his final pleading to the girl who's changed her hair and has new friends and new fashion. He'll put it on him even though he knows it's over. He misses her already but for the sake of the good times, the deep conversations the things they shared together, he'll put it all on the line, forgo all sense of ego for her. Will she stay? Well, the album is called The Stranger so you tell me.

Hola.

Agreed - as a child of the 1970s (born 1964) I think that is why I will always love the music of that era - the songs you often don't even know that you know till you find yourself singing the lyrics in response to a situation.... ( ex "I'll be right back baby" said to kitten leads to "Baby Come Back" by Player etc. Happens all day long to me! )

A little story about the 1st time I heard this tune. I'm a jazz saxophone player. Back in college in the 70s I was waking up on Saturday morning and this song came on. I hear the alto sax solo and I say to my wife "that's Phil Woods." She says "no way. He wouldn't be on a Billy Joel album. He's more of a bebop player." So I had to drag her into to town (walk a couple miles) to find a record store to find the album cover where it said "sax solo Phil Woods". BOOM. Vindicated. 😅

One of the critics is himself. I think this is one of most perfectly done songs. Chords, Lyrics, Fender Rhodes, on and on....but in the Wiki page said he didn't like it. Not that uncommon. Some masterpieces people write and don't think that much of them.

Hola.
