Farm Aid

Күн бұрын

Billy Joel sings "Only the Good Die Young" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985 accompanied on piano by Randy Newman.
A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

I was there (yep, lucky me!) and despite the off and on rains and a few technical problems, it was so fantastic that most of the fans in attendance and those who watched on tv to this day have no idea how magical an event it was. Oh, the talent!

TOTAL PRO at 0:15. To recover from interference like that without losing his cool, without losing the beat, and then bringing it to where he brought it? That's how a master of the performing arts does it - total command. If I could be guided by his example I would rejoice.

I liked Billy Joel when I was in middle school back in the 90s, and I still like him cause he's awesome... I got made fun of for my taste in music as a teenager, but whatever... I think a lot of younger people are into classic stuff these days and that's good.

In 1979, me and 3 others took an evening chemistry test, and then ran to the Assembly Hall to catch Billy Joel. Then 6 years later, right across the street at Memorial Stadium, I was lucky enough to work the show at the very first Farm Aid and see him again from backstage. One of the things I had to do that day was run the track assignment sheets from the stage to the mobile recording truck. There are 24-track raw tape reels (somewhere) of every one of these acts from that entire show, and it would be nice if they could go back and spruce these songs up since the live mixes that went on the air were kind of marginal due to technical glitches and much rain during the early part of the day. Thanks for posting.

I am a product of the 80s and couldn't really enjoy Billy Joel during this decade. I will say this is one of my favorite songs and ironically was introduced to me by my 12th grade English teacher 10 years ago. The magic of this song is the fact that the catchy beat is completely contradictory to the lyrics which are kind of heavy. I love it when artists do that with music. This song is simply genius.

Actually, originally billy wrote that tune as a reagge song, and when the band first played it together, the drummer (liberty devitto) found it so bad and the beat so unfitting he threw his sticks at billy, who then let liberty choose another beat

You must have been at a concert I attended in the late 70's right after Piano Man came out. Billy fronted The Beach Boys. That was back when concerts were in town every weekend and cheap! Anyway, no one paid any attention to Billy and yelled and partied as he played. I liked him and listened...to what I could hear. It really got sad when he asked if we wanted an encore and no one even cared. He said I guess not.. I guess people weren't ready for him...yet.

He brought his stadium act! I wonder if Billy Joel gave the band specific instructions to lean in. I'm not sure he had done stadium shows yet and some comments he made about Live Aid make it sound like he was wary.

Awesome performance. Too bad for the technical difficulties. I think both Billy & Randy's pianos, as well as David Brown's guitar are completely absent from the mix. Can't you fix this, Farm Aid? This is just the broadcast footage... surely some archival tape of the audio exists. This was the opening song for the prime time network coverage, and you can see Billy deciding that the show must go on. Thankfully he, Russell on acoustic, Doug on Bass & Liberty on drums carried the performance!

Well Todd, it's tough when they don't give you the proper amplification. You could hardly hear the piano. We're not an instrument where you can have a direct plug-in into an amp like an electric guitar. I agree with you that it is subpar, but you should blame the venue, not him.
