Lyrics:
You have to learn to pace yourself
Pressure
You're just like everybody else
Pressure
You've only had to run so far
So good
But you will come to a place
Where the only thing you feel
Are loaded guns in your face
And you'll have to deal with
Pressure
You used to call me paranoid
Pressure
But even you cannot avoid
Pressure
You turned the tap dance into your crusade
Now here you are with your faith
And your Peter Pan advice
You have no scars on your face
And you cannot handle
Pressure

Classic song. Billy Joel is one of the greatest lyricists in Rock history. I love the line: "Now here you are in the ninth, two men out and three men on. Nowhere to look but inside where we all respond to pressure." Those of us who have been alive awhile have all been there where others are depending on us and the thought of blowing it is terrifying. We just have to put the fear aside and do what we need to do.

Yup. The longer I live, the more I realize that it does not matter how nice your ship is, just if it is still top side up or not. There are far too many shipwrecks in sight. A lot of it is knowing, as this song says so well, how to handle pressure.

@stephenmark6781
@stephenmark6781 3 жыл бұрын
@@Knatterbart It is a baseball reference. Really only makes sense if you know the sport. There are nine innings in a game and three outs in each inning, so this is your last chance. Three men on means that three of your teammates have reached base successfully, setting you up to either win or lose the game for your team, to be either the hero or the scapegoat: the very definition of "pressure."

3:26, the little blond boy who's desk is overflowing is a metaphor for kids who barely have a handle on the things that put pressure on them. The dark-haired boy, that I assume to be a young Joel, is shocked because he sees someone who's struggling in ways that he understands-- which is a rare thing because it's so "shameful" to show that you're under immense emotional pressure.

In this song Billy Joel talks about a guy who is struggling to cope with the pressures of his life. The song is unusual because it is sung in the second person (Joel refers to the character as "you" in the verses). The driving synthesizer implies the near-paranoia the man is feeling. He does one other song like this style on the same album - Allentown. Also note When Joel sings, "All your life is Channel 13, ," he's referring to the New York TV station WNET (channel 13), which is the PBS affiliate that carried the show.

You reminded me of something I've wondered off and on my whole life: why were PBS stations almost always set up all by themselves at the high end of the old analog dial? In Tulsa, where I grew up, the PBS channel was 11; NBC was 2, CBS was 6, and ABC was 8. I had long suspected that there was something undesirable about the higher channels, and PBS simply didn't have the money or the clout that commercial stations had. Anyway, I just now googled it, and it turned out I was right. The low-VHF channels, 2 to 6, had more stable technology and better "market penetration" than the high-VHF channels, 7 to 13. All but five of America's public television stations were high-VHF. Now that TV is digital, not analog, that's no longer relevant.

I had no idea my HS enthusiasm would be eviscerated by some coaches who had a run in with my bio father ( who I had almost nothing to do with by this time) back in 1963. Ironically, I’m stronger for the small and insignificant injustice I am blessed to have been nobody but me. Indeed here I am in the ninth with two men out and three men on .

I haven't seen this since I was a kid. The combination of striking images and a heavy rotation on Mtv burned every moment into our brains. Seeing it now is nostalgic yet perpetually relevant. We're always captives of our own realities. The most compelling part for me was the trail of paper from the kid up to the old man, summing up our lives in one bleak stroke. APPLAUSE. Wow, that's brilliant.

One of my favorite songs of his. I want to become a psychologist (which I'm going to school for) and I feel like a lot of Joel's work is a psychoanalyst's wet dream. I love it.

The director is Russell Mulcahy, who's pretty much royalty when it comes to music videos. He's got several iconic videos in his CV: this one, "A Matter of Trust," Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart," Duran Duran's "The Wild Boys," and "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles...which was the very first video aired on MTV.

+kevin blanch I know RIGHT!! I Adore Billy Joel's music - had quite collection growing up as a teenager (kept my albums, cassettes which would be in a safe place) but Hurricane Katrina wiped it all away - my house was not only flooded but a freaking tornado left it as a shell and all my personal endearing possessions were either ruined or the tornado just took it; I'm not alone. I have to say your channel lifts my spirits - thanks so much for your Billy Joel collection of videos. "Uptown Girl" was like a "nickname" for me b/c I hung out in Mid-City - and sometimes was driving a diff vehicle - my 65' light blue Mustang (perfect condition) was given to me on my 15th B-day, I still had my 80 something Ford Granada as well -- so yeah they meant no harm calling me that b/c I wasn't a snob and my family wasn't rich (I was just the youngest "baby girl"- have 2 older sisters and a brother) - dad/mom both worked hard.. Anyway sorry for ranting on -- but AGAIN your channel rocks - thank you so so much :)

I just told my wife: "Wow!, look at Billy how young", I was in High School when this video was out. I really do miss the 80's and this video still great. I remember back then telling my Sister: Dream on!, he wouldn't give you the time....
